River House Restaurant & Raw Bar Ratings and Reviews
We ate dinner with our kids before watching the Nutcracker. This could be our new favorite restaurant! Fresh from the gulf Seafood was amazing. I learned and tasted the difference between west and east coast oysters. The atmosphere is great with a perfect view of the Ohio river. We went outside after dinner next to the gas fire pit and enjoyed watching the boats on the river.
Although my meal was fine, my out of town guest had to send her beef medallions dish back as the meat was too tough & full of gristle. The waitress did bring her a scallop dish as a replacement but the experience and timing were disappointing especially since I had raved to my guests about River House.
We were there for brunch on Dec.10 with 5 couples. We have had dinner there several times and thought the food was good and the service excellent. However I would not recommend this to anyone for brunch. My hash browns were served cold. They looked like last night leftover potatoes and there where more crumbs than potato chunks. No taste either. The vegetarian omelet was excellent. The coffee was good but we kept having to ask for refills. The server did not inform the gluten free guest if the hash browns were GF. He was asked to find out. The only thing that made it better than a chain restaurant brunch was the view.
We sat at the bar before dinner for drinks and appetizers - service was slow, oysters were not shucked properly, empanadas were tasty but soggy, silverware was dirty and had to be sent back. The dinner tuna had a lot of tendons in it. The bar manager and waiter were very apologetic but overall it was a disappointing experience.
The cocktails were lovely as always and very excellent service. The food was a little off this time. The seafood was well-prepared but there were inconsistencies on the rest of the plate. I enjoy veggies with some crunch certainly however the zucchini on one plate and the acorn squash on the other were essentially raw. These items are important to us because of dietary restrictions. We like to enjoy our veggies! River House is a beautiful space that deserves more attention to detail. The manager asked and we answered, so they are aware now.
I have eaten here 5 times - 3 of the 5 meals have been substandard IMO. All three of the meals I was disappointed with were on the specialty menu. I would consider main menu items if you frequent this restaurant. The scallops my wife ordered were not washed properly and had sand in them still. While I have no problem paying such prices for quality food I believe the prices here are unreasonable for the poor quality. I’ve had meals as good or better at numerous other restaurants in the Louisville area.
Terrible service and food. Waiter had all the personality of "Anywhere but Here" Very unfriendly and also told us to hurry up and order because they were expecting a party of 40 and another of 20. That is not our problem that is your problem and your management's problem. The appetizer was wrong and was sent back to get it correct - again the waiter was not listening and did not want to be there and was more interested in turning the table than providing service. There were four of us and we all ordered something different. When the food arrived three of us had to send it back because it tasted like they poured an entire box of salt on each dinner. It was disgusting, you could't eat it . The fourth person ordered chicken and it was fine (I guess they ran out of salt ) The waiter didn't offer any alternative and the manager came later to say "sorry about the food" and that was it! Never saw him again. This was my second visit and my last. They are way over priced, the seafood is at best average and the menu is lacking in creativity. There is really nothing this establishment has to offer except for a river view - and you can get a view and seafood right next door WITHOUT the salt.
I've probably eaten at River House 20-25 times since it opened and it's my "go to" place when there's a special occasion or guests from out of town. It's obvious the food is prepared with great care. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming and the view of the river perfect. It was so pleasant to watch the flames flicker in the outdoor fire pits on a recent cold, wintry evening.
Sunday evening we had reservations at The River House. We arrived and were promptly seated in a cozy booth. The restaurant was clean and I would imagine have an amazing outdoor atmosphere during the warmer month's with outside seating. We dined in November so it was too chilly to enjoy the patio. The drinks were made well. My husband tried the Bourbon Flight. The waiter that brought it to our table spilled all 3 glasses (not a big deal to us). They promptly brought him a new flight free of charge.
Food: We ordered the stone crab for our appetizer. It was delicious but be aware that you are paying $30 for two TINY claws. Not worth the price. My husband had a sampling of raw oysters and mashed potatoes for his meal. He enjoyed both and said the oysters were cold and very fresh. I ordered the Makers 46 Planked salmon. It was just okay. I took a recommendation for a creamy sauce on top from our server and wished I had not. The salmon already had enough flavors going on and it made it too rich. For dessert, our server recommend the sea salt caramel ice cream. It was waaay too sweet for me. I would return to this restaurant, I would just choose another entree and dessert. I believe this place has excellent potential, especially with the view in the warmer months.
I enjoyed my time, but my dish was not very good. I ordered the Grouper Entree & it came with mixed veges & a lot of rissoto. There was very little fish & only 2 pieces of shrimp? It was not a very good value! I was disappointed, but the 2 appetizers were very good! My cocktails of vodka tonic were OK; couldn't taste the vodka & it seemed water downed? Not a good value for the money!
We loved our dinner at River House. It was our first time there. The service was the best part and the food a close second. Every single employee that we encountered there said hello and was kind and welcoming towards us. We had a seafood tower from the raw bar and it was delicious. We also had a seasonal pasta, chowder, and a po-boy. All were incredible. For drinks, my mother and I each ordered a cocktail from the seasonal menu and my husband had a beer. My mother liked her ginger drink more than I liked my pear drink, but they were both tasty. I am looking forward to going back to River House sometime. Again, the service there was just incredible.
This was our second visit to this restaurant. We ordered the same thing as last time because it was amazing and it did not let us down the second time around (Sea food tower for 2). This evening was for of our mothers birthdays, it was her first time and she loved it. She said she would be back again for sure!
Thank you for a wonderful evening!
River House is a beautiful waterfront restaurant with a view of the Ohio River where you can enjoy a great menu of foods, cocktails, and wines. Their staff is well trained and informed about the food being served. Their raw bar is wonderful and if you have an opportunity, you should try the raw West Coast oysters. They are incredibly fresh and delicious. Food presentation makes the experience worthwhile. Wonderful place for a date, out of town guests, and locals who enjoy great food. I love Chef Varanese's culinary creativity and grateful we have him in our community!
We're from out of town and were trying to find a place to enjoy the last of Kentucky's warmth and river view before heading back to cold Chicago. Didn't realize so many places weren't open on Sundays. The concierge at our hotel recommended this place to us and we were not disappointed! Got to sit outside and watch the tug boats. Beautiful! And the seafood was outstanding!
We sat outside looking at the river, which was nice, relaxing, and peaceful. It was our first time dining here, and we had to take some time to familiarize with the menu. We mentioned that, and no help was offered, which was different from what we noticed at the other tables, where the overall menu and special items were presented. We found the wine selection quite broad, and enjoyed our choices (a white haven Marlborough sauv blanc and a Venetian Pinot Grigio). We selected the mussels (nice, maybe a tad too spicy) and the chargrilled octopus - which was really nice. The house cornbread was a great touch and complemented all the food well. The seafood platter was very good, and the chef accommodated our choice of having it grilled rather than deep fried, which we deeply appreciated. I also had the special Hawaiian fish du jour, which was enjoyable but way overpriced. The atmosphere would have been much nicer if we were spared the swarming honey bees and flies that were all over our meals and faces.
Honestly, I am a good OpenTable customer, and I did not appreciate my reservation not being acknowledged, when we took our time to make a reservation even at an early time of the day, when the restaurant was nearly empty.
Was in Louisville for a conference, party was 25 folks. River house was flexible with reservations, late additions to party and the service was excellent. My guests were impressed with every aspect of the restaurant. The food was tremendous, my customers were still talking about the next day.
