The decor was very good, a tastefully converted church. Wine was very nice, main course of haloumi and wedges was superb. The elder and gooseberry fumble dessert was delicious. The waiter was very good on his first day.

We booked the restaurant last minute for a Saturday at 8.45 On arrival we where informed the table was not ready and asked to have a drink at the bar . It appeared short staffed behind the bar and despite the waitress acknowledge we where waiting it took 15 minutes to be served as she and one other colleague where serving the restaurant. We where then shown to our table and informed . No steak no lamb and some other meat dish . A venison meatloaf was the replacement. Along with chicken thighs and Pork. I fail to understand how a restaurant of this nature could run out of 3 meat dishes! We eat starters and left as both wanted meat. Went over to Aqua where surprisingly nothing ran out I would not recommend it or go back to the restaurant

Our first and definitely last evening out at River Cottage Canteen was very underwhelming. Our party had to wait nearly an hour and a quarter before our table was ready. A small sharing platter was offered free of charge to compensate us for the wait, which barely between the seven of us. When we came to ordering our meal several of the main courses were unavailable. Our meal eventually arrived with two wrong vegetable accompaniments. Needless to say, we didn't stay to order a dessert. Very poor.

This is obviously an excellent restaurant with high standards, that takes itself very seriously in what it does. My girlfriend and I were impressed with the food and the very friendly and helpful serving staff. It was all very tasty and it's got a lovely atmosphere in a very picturesque building. There were however some problems in that the three most popular dishes (steak, the lamb and chicken) were all out of stock. I opted for my third choice (the venison special) and my girlfriend had the fish. The food was excellent though, but the serving staff were obviously over stretched with rather long waiting times and confused service at times. The restaurant responded really well to our disappointment in the lack of choices for mains though -- they gave us our bottle of wine for free! Overall, I would definitely recommend the River Cottage Canteen and we'll certainly be going there again.

On this occasion the staff were rushed which reflected badly on service. We waited far too long for our drinks even after waiting to place our order. Water also took too long. Disappointing.

Went for a birthday meal and was very disappointed. Although the staff were lovely there clearly weren't enough of them so it took 2 hours to get 2 courses and we were about to cancel the coffee when it arrived. Food was unimpressive, hot and cold sides served on the same dish so all cold, lamb was tasty but over cooked however they were happy to take it off the bill. Wouldn't go back, trading off celebrity chef status but not living up to it....

We booked River Cottage for a mid-week 18th birthday meal. The restaurant staff were welcoming and friendly but service was slow and inattentive. The restaurant was unable to provide a second order of cocktails and although it was very nice that the birthday girl was given a glass of champagne this was offered right at the end of the meal during the dessert. The food itself was delicious as you would expect from River Cottage.

Very generous portions and very friendly staff but regrettably they were hopelessly understaffed which just wasn't fair on the two people in the restaurant to a tasked with waiting on all the tables which meant we were unable to sit down at the planned time and there was noose to offer us a drink whilst we were waiting which was not the fault of the stuff in anyway ! It really affects enjoyment of the meal when you can see those so kindly serving you are struggling !

Staff was not friendly. Children's menu was poor: my child was offered cheese on toast for dinner. We were really looking forward to trying their food and it was rather disappointing apart from pudding.
