River Café Ratings and Reviews
The octopus appetizer was recommended by the server, she said it was amazing. not something I would order again or recommend to anyone.
the carrot cake for dessert lacked flavour
our friends ordered vegetables for the side with their main, all they received was a pile of lettuce.
River Cafe is my favourite Calgary restaurant. The very smell of it is beautiful and familiar to me. This time we were there for lunch and most of us had the Turkish-style eggs, a dish that was original, delicious and satisfying. The restaurant's location on Prince's Island allows for a gorgeous view, no matter what the season, and on this particular day it was sunny and wintry, which is just what we wanted as visitors from rainy, grey Vancouver. We had a lovely time, as we always do at this wonderful place; the short walk over from Eau Claire allows you to decompress a bit as you make your way there. I couldn't recommend it more highly. The service is always warm without being oppressive.
We enjoyed their tasting menu, and let the chef select our dishes. We were pleasantly amazed by how generous each course was, and how many courses we were served, even compared to the best in the city I would say nowhere else offers as "big" of a dining experience. Each course was well thought out and made sense as part of a longer meal. The service was amazing throughout the meal where multiple people would stop by the table to make sure things were OK, to answer questions or to make sure we were happy. Sitting next to the fireplace is a cozy experience where you can feel the warmth and even smell the wood smoke of a real rustic fireplace. Perfect for a cold day.
Everything good except for buying an americano which is 4.50 and then asking for a refill of regular coffee into same cup and being charged 4 bucks for it. Had I ordered a regular coffee the refill of it would have been free. It’s this kind of charging that drives customers crazy and does not reflect well upon restaurant especially when your bill is already 130.
We went to the River Cafe for brunch (Sunday). I kind of wish there were more menu choices but it was limited to the brunch menu. We still found things to have though and all were very good. The location has to be the best part, even though it is the fall and a lot of leaves are already down it is such a great location to have a meal.
This place was amazing! The location was awesome, the service was lovely and the food... SPECTACULAR. We went for my boyfriends birthday brunch and it was to die for. I still catch myself daydreaming about River Cafe when I'm particularly hungry. Their eggs benny was insane!
Perfect service. Food preparation is not as outstanding as in previous occasions and the menu is getting a tad stale. In order words, the wow factor is lost. Talking about lost, they also lost our reservation and I had insist to look for myself in the computer which did the trick (a minor issue but kind of adds unnecessary stress).
River Café still delivers with fresh ingredients and an unbeatable location. It won't disappoint but it won't blow you away as in other times.
Really cute and cozy, almost a slight cabin vibe. The staff were all super friendly, polite and on the ball. The food and drink were both delicious. We only went for brunch this time but can't wait to try the lunch and dinner menus. The location really can't be beat either, what a gorgeous river walk.
I was there with a friend I had not seen in a long time. Nice cosy atmosphere, wooden chairs, canoe accessories, little white lights. The mushroom mousse entree was tasty and delicate, nicely paired with pear preserves, with delicious roasted bread. I had the lamb, not too cooked and very nicely presented with cucumber emulsion and roasted cauliflower I wish I could bake at home...cocktails were a bit diluted for my taste, but fresh (I had the River Currant). We did not have dessert, we are already full!
For decades, I have been wanting to come here. Before I became a foodie, I used to watch people go in and out of this famous restaurant while I worked nearby and hoping I'd afford to get in there one day. Now, that I have made it, I can't be any prouder as a Calgarian. Though I don't live here anymore and have dined in many amazing restaurants in this country for the last 15 years, River Cafe...makes it to my top three favourite restaurant in Canada. I will not forget this experience. Great service, ambience, and of course...the delicious creative unforgettable food we had. Kudos to the kitchen and to the team that makes this restaurant a must place to dine when in Calgary. To all the Calgarians, who have not been here, make it a happen and visit your city's gem...
I was there for lunch on Saturday to celebrate a special occasion with my 2 sons and their wives. This was not my first time here, but it was for everyone else and we all loved it. We had 2 game boards, oysters, muscles and Turkish eggs. Muscles were the best I have ever had, oysters were excellent as well. The eggs were fine, served on a bed of hummus topped with sprouts. The game and seafood appetizer is always good. The location of this restaurant makes it a nice outing.
We came for birthday lunch with group of 5 reserving a table. We had asked for patio but they didn't open it for us☹️(Opened it an hour later as we were eating brunch). We were told that we needed to be finished by 1, to sit at a table by the window, which was fine, but seemed rushed and overpriced for what we ate and drank. They seemed fixed in getting us out before their big group. Our reservation was for 11:30. The meals came quickly. The bill without alcohol including 20% tip was $205, $41/person. There were 5, but the pastry came in 3's for $10. $4 coffee and $1 for still water, seriously. As we were leaving there was yet no big group, and patio was starting to get going.
