River Cafe Ratings and Reviews
Went here with a friend in April and loved it so decided to go back for my husbands birthday. Both times we were fortunate to be seated by the window with that stunning view. The first time we ordered off the menu, this time we had the tasting menu. Both are great options. The service was excellent, the sommelier was knowledgeable and gave good advice and we are already planning to come back when my in laws visit from England 🏴
The River Cafe is still one of the special finds in NYC. There is no view like it of Manhattan . It has an elegance often forgotten in today's restaurants. Our waiter was high caliber and friendly. Food superb. Where else can you get the Brooklyn Bridge in chocolate for dessert and your purse seated on its own footstool ?
Was told by others who have been here, great dining experience, food, & Manhattan city viewing along the river. Fantastic experience that didn’t disappoint, my BD girl was so moved with the restaurant in all aspects. What a wonderful & magical venue that will surely be a family tradition!
While the River Cafe did not have Southern Comfort on hand at the bar for my favorite kind of Manhattan, they made it up to me by giving us a window table and an exceptional evening of service and cuisine.
I have worked in fine dinning and have been to world class restaurants, so I know what to look for and the River Cafe exceeded all expectations.
We celebrated an anniversary here recently. The food was severely lacking, especially for this price range. To start, we had the scallops and pork belly (excellent) and the scallop special (disappointing). The scallop special was almost like a poorly made crab salad with the beautiful scallops chopped into fine pieces and immersed in a tasteless mayo. For our main course we had the lamb - excellent as expected, and the branzino which again was disappointing and bland. Dessert was respectable as we went with the classics: Chocolate Brooklyn Bridge and the Key Lime Soufflé. Overall, unfortunately, the food did not live up to the Michelin star expectations or the price. There are far more extraordinary (and modern!) culinary experiences a couple can find in NYC in equally beautiful settings. The ambiance was stuffy and the decor dated. Just because your restaurant is next to water doesn't see you need to decorate it like a boat. The service was truly outstanding and the scenery may be outstanding as well depending on where you are seated. In our case, we were seated at a table with limited views of the harbour and no view of the bridge. Our wine pairing was perfect.
I dislike writing these reviews, because to be perfectly honest, I don't have much to say about most restaurants. But the River Cafe is nonpareil. The view is spectacular, the cocktails are well made, and the food is visually appealing and delicious And the professional but gracious service is like something you will not experience anyplace else. I've been there a dozen or so times in the last ten years. It's pricey but worth every penny.
The River Cafe is a great little spot just under the Brooklyn Bridge. We booked this place for a meal on our last night in NYC. We heard about it from family that have been here before and always come here on every visit to New York.
Firstly the River Cafe is on a brilliant location and the scenery is just bliss! You probably won't find a better view of the New York Skyline anywhere else. The view is just incredible!
As for the dining, the staff were very attentive and always on hand. We felt sometimes even a little too much, like overly attended too. Once we finished our dishes the waiter was over instantly. The food was great and was what you would expect of first class dining. The dishes were small yet flavourful and filling. For the price we paid I wasn't blown away, as in it wasn't the best food I had ever tasted but take nothing away from the chef it was great food!
The ambience of the room was great and is ideal for a romantic evening dinner. This is what we felt we were really paying for, the view and the setting.
A 3 course meal is $130 each so you can imagine the bill.
But none the less this is a great restaurant to visit and I would highly recommend it if you only plan to visit NYC once, you have to do it.
