Ristorante Italiano - Excelsior Inn Ratings and Reviews
I went to Excelsior for my birthday brunch. My family came and my Son treated us all. I wish I could say it was excellent. It was disappointing. Unfortunately, the service was lacking. There were only 2 other tables so that shouldn't have been the case. The server asked me after the meal was over, not during, if I wanted another drink. We asked for condiments for the brunch potatoes etc. She brought them when we had finished eating. What?!! The coffee was luke warm- the bacon was not crisp. need I say more?
A neat romantic place! Diverse menu, beautiful presentation and a great selection of desserts. Wine list was adequate. Oysters were delicious. Recommend that wines be poured at the table as they do in better restuarants. Not sure we got the wine we ordered.
The ambiance, food, wine, dessert, and service were all outstanding. Brett and Jennifer were fantastic.
We stayed in the Excelsior Inn and went to Ristorante Italiano for my birthday - it was a special experience. We looked over the menu and selected our entrees. They would go with a red wine. I
Ristorante Italiano has an extensive list of Italian wines (one of the few areas I'm not familiar with) so we asked Brett for help. He asked what we liked in a red and then made several recommendations. I asked him which was his favorite, and he recommended an Amarone della Valpolicella. It was fantastic and unlike anything I'd ever had.
My daughter in attending the U of O, and we plan to stay at the Excelsior and dine at Ristorante Italiano every time we visit.
The appetizers and dessert were amazing. Thoughtfully constructed, with lovely simple presentation. Best of all, delicious and high quality. Service was professional, prompt and unpretentious. Only 2 critiques, first, we made a reservation on open table and they didn't know anything about it when we got there, so I wouldn't recommend using open table for the reservation. Second, the entree sounded wonderful but fell flat. The filet, although a highest quality cut, was dry and the sea bass was overdone and a bit chewy. That wouldn't keep me away though, I'll just order tons of those mouth watering appetizers.
The food and service were outstanding. The wine list was incredible as well. My only complaint was the atmosphere - we were expecting a fine dining establishment - and it was - but it was game day for the Ducks and mostly everyone in there was in Duck gear - shorts, tennis shoes, etc. We were hoping for something a little more sophisticated, not a sports bar. All in all, a great time, and we'll be back.
This restaurant was a huge disappointment. My husband and I went last night with some friends and expected a quality experience based on the positive reviews and price point. My friend and I ordered the lobster ravioli, expecting some soft pillows of fresh pasta filled with fresh lobster. Our server told us that they made their pasta fresh in house and that there was a lot of lobster in the ravioli. The ravioli tasted exactly like the Costco lobster ravioli with ground unidentifiable fish inside. The sauce was flavorless and the "lobster tail" that was supposed to be on top, was very small (2oz or so). Mine was tiny but was cooked OK. However, my friend's lobster tail was tiny and mushy. We asked for fresh lemon, and parmesan, to try to give the dish a kick but it was still bad, particularly considering the $35 cost. UNACCEPTABLE... My husband had the fish special, which was seabass and it was overcooked and flavorless. The fourth person in our party had the ribeye and his dish was OK. The caesar salads were also subpar. The dressing was watery and didn't pack much flavor. Our server could tell that we were not happy campers and "comped" us the two caesar salads, but frankly that was little consolation for the unacceptable quality versus cost of the meal. I am shocked that this restaurant would serve such horrible food. It is so sad because we were in town for a concert and had high hopes for a lovely meal. We visit Eugene often but will NEVER go back there.
The total experience was wonderful. The food was superb and properly prepared; the wine list was more than adequate, and the dessert was out of this world. If there is any negative, it is the lack of really adequate parking nearby. However, the relatively short walk was not a major deterrent. Overall, it is a bit on the pricey side, but for the special occasion was well worth it!
Wonderful food and service but disappointed they don't do a free dessert for birthdays. They did however light a candle for the gelato we bought when they brought it out. Pretty spendy for what you actually get we felt. Guess that's why this was a special occasion visit!
The food was absolutely amazing. We started with the Fritto Misto di Mare. The squid and oysters were cooked just right - a delicate crunch on the outside, and tender inside. They did not have the usual lamb dish, but my wife had the substituted duck confit, which was very good. I had the fish of the day, salmon, also excellent, and served with a very tasty preparation of cherry tomatoes. Ended the meal with a delightful chocolate desert concoction. Our server was friendly, and knowledgeable. The ambiance is very elegant.
Perhaps our expectations were set too high? We ordered appetizers, entrees and dessert. We brought in our bottles of wine from Sonoma Wine country.
Our waitress started off on a good note but as the evening continued she was less and less attentive; curt when she did stop by out table. Food was underwhelming; pasta dishes were flavorful but undercooked; fish was dry; prawns tough and chewy. The atmosphere is small and quaint, quiet and nice decor. If it had been cooler they had a nice outdoor dining area we would have enjoyed as well. Prices were too high for quality and quantity of food prepared...and we are from Sonoma County where everything is expensive.
Stopped here for dinner and so glad we did. We Had the filet mignon and lamb. Both delicious. We ended staying the night as it is also a quaint hotel ! Room was nice , Had a comfortable bed , and we loved the jacuzzi tub immensely. We stayed in the Tchaikovsky room.
We had a group of seven, but had plenty of space. Food and service were both excellent. We shared some oysters (the limoncello minagrette was delicious!). One of our favorite wines (a syrah from L'Ecole in Walla Walla) was on their list, so that was a fun surprise. Our server was attentive and friendly while still professional. I particularly enjoyed the prawns wrapped in prosciutto; my husband had the lamb special. We had been to the restaurant at Excelsior a number of years ago and always wanted to go back. It did not disappoint!!!
Each item chosen from the menu was delicious. Crab cakes were a perfect compliment to our wine selections. Entrees (prosciutto wrapped prawns & goat cheese ravioli) were perfectly prepared. Coconut cream pie with a cup of decaf was an excellent finale. Our waiter was one of the best we've had recently--personable, helpful & efficient.
We were planning on going to portland for my birthday dinner, but ran short on time, so I made last-second reservations here. Initially, I was a little disappointed that plans had changed, but I think it was for the better. It's a beautiful venue with superb, attentive staff, and some of the best food I've ever had. I strongly recommend Excelsior Inn Ristorante, and can't wait to go back!
