I will caveat the review with, it was Valentines day.
1st issue was the reservation times were not being honored and seating was 30+ minutes after the reservation time. 2nd issue was the amount of staff could not keep up with the demand, it took 15+ minutes to get water and another 10 minutes to get bread. Once the order was placed for food, the food arrived quickly.
The beef carpaccio had mustard on it and that was over powering. (3 stars)
The pasta was overcooked, bordering on mushy (1 star)
The veal with white wine and asparagus was delicious. (4 stars)
We visited this restaurant on Valentine's day and had a poor first experience. We got there for a nice quiet dinner but it was noisy the whole time, with a long line of people right next to our table who were waiting for their reservations. All our food and drinks came late and the lamb entree was cold so we had to send it back. Took forever to get a glass of water even. I was very shocked to see that their Valentine's day menu had a lot higher prices ($14 higher for the prawns, and $7 higher for the lamb), than their regular menu (you can compare this on their website). I didn't even feel like leaving a good tip at the end because of a pretty sad experience for my husband and I.
We visited on Valentine's Day, and while the restaurant was full, the servers and kitchen were working efficiently to make sure the customers were enjoying their time there and that the food was prepared well and served hot. It was a great evening with great atmosphere and very kind hosts.
Average Italian style cusine, we've had better Italian food in authentic Italian places
I love this place, great service, great food, moderate pricing. Always good and quiet enough for a business meal.
Food was very good. Restaurant was busy, but service was good. Nice family dinner. The type of place you go for a nice meal with friends or family.
This restaurant is great! It's a favorite for my family! You and your family will love everything on the menu!
We dined at this restaurant during the SuperBowl and there were few other guests. We were a party of 8, including 2 small children. The service was great; the waiter even brought the food for the children soon after we ordered. We were able to dine and converse in a comfortable atmosphere which is rare these days. The owner was very hospitable and some of us joined him at the bar after dinner for some lively conversation and the exciting ending of the football game. Oh, yes, our dinners were delicious! We'll be going back to Ristorante Don Giovanni again before long.
Average Italian food, not special. The sauce tasted burnt. I was here a few years ago and was more impressed then.
We enjoyed our early dinner here; our meals were quite tasty and the service was good. I suspect the noise level might be higher if we had been there later. We will definitely be back!
I ordered the Penne al Pesto substituting the Penne for Angel Hair. The menu description says "Pasta with garlic, basil, and olive oil blended", which is what I wanted and expected. What they didn't say is that it is a "creamy pesto" that they add cream to, which is NOT what I wanted. Was really disappointed when I got my dish, but we wanted to eat so I ate it anyway. The cream made it very slippery and difficult to eat the pasta as it kept sliding off the fork. Given all the food allergies and restraints out there, the menu items should reflect the correct ingredients without being so misleading. Not a fan.
The booth we sat in needed to have a more original repair than tape. The service was very slow and the noise level was loud. Given the ambiance, I did not think that the restaurant lived up to the cost of the meal.
Three of us met for dinner and conversation. Able to talk without raising our voices. Good lighting. All three had a different pasta dish and gelato for dessert. We were all very happy with our food choices. Wait staff was attentive but not intrusive. Definitely will go back again.
The food was good, but we waited 50 minutes between our salads and the arrival of our entrees while repeatedly asking our waiter to check on our order. Meanwhile, guests at tables on either side of us who had arrived and placed their orders well after us were served their dinners and finished. When ours finally arrived, we had just 10 minutes to eat before having to rush out to see a play. The food was tasty, but one of the entrees was tepid while the other was piping hot. At no time was an apology made or any explanation or concession offered, and our waiter didn't ask if our food was okay. While the ambiance and food were good, with so many other choices for dining in the area, we will not be back.
We have been going to Giovani's for years and the food has always been quite delicious, which is why we return there fairly often (maybe once every 2-3 months.). The one thing we have noticed is that there is one particular server who is very sweet but he will often speak so fast and with his Italian accent his verbal explanations of specials leaves us wondering what was stated. We were there a few nights ago and when he came to our table to explain the specials being served, all of us said we got about every 3rd or 4th word. It is frustrating, especially when we have to ask him to repeat. Otherwise, we had a good time as we usually do. It is well worth the quality of the food and ambiance. Enjoy!
Arrived at a friends suggestion for a catch up lunch, the service was helpful and prompt, but they didn't circle the table to move you along. Food was good Italian, we shared calamari, I had gnocchi, my friend had a vegetable platter, and we shared a gelato. All very tasty, interesting to me the roast vegies were the best.
Decent parking behind the restaurant, would go againl
I've walked by this restaurant many times, and decided to make a reservation for dinner. The service was excellent with the right amount of attention to us and our needs. I had chicken with a lemon and caper sauce with vegetables and mashed potatoes which was very good. My friend had chicken parm, and it was a large serving so enough for leftovers.
Perfect evening! Food and service was above average!
Fabulous meal and doting staff! Had a wonderful New Years Eve with friends there.
Worst service ever. Waiter was rude and rushed us even though the restaurant was nearly empty. We had a reservation for 12/26 at 5:00 pm. Will not go back. Food was ok.
We arrived on time with a 6:30 Dinner reservation for 3 on Christmas Day. They clearly dropped the ball (probably overbooked) because when we arrived they were many parties who hadn't been seated and apparently also had reservations and been waiting for a while. You could see the frustration on their faces, and it's sad because it was Christmas. We ended up waiting 30 minutes to be seated, and I wouldn't have minded waiting this long if the food was good. It didn't taste bad per se, however our pasta entres and calimari came out lukewarm. Pretty sad b/c I had the feeling everything would've tasted great otherwise. We also got the entres about an hour after being seated. All in all, super disappointing, especially because a friend had pretty good things to say about this restaurant. I wouldn't rule out going there again because I can see how they may have screwed up by overbooking on x-mas and not having the manpower to handle it, but they're definitely on thin ice here.
Normally I'd rate Don Giovanni more highly. They're several steps above a pizza+pasta Italian restaurant (even though there are some decidedly non-Italian dishes on the menu). However, I've come to the conclusion that this is a place to be avoided on major holidays.
To their credit, Don Giovanni is open and serving on Thanksgiving and Christmas days. Unfortunately, Giovanni's apparent policy of honoring walk-ins on Xmas means it's a total zoo (Seriously, a walk-in party of 10?). The thin staff is overwhelmed and it shows. The manager was overtly hostile to his staff and barely civil to the waiting patrons, the wait staff couldn't cover all their tables in a timely fashion and the hostess completely lost control of the incoming guests.
My dish-a standard veal saltimbocca-was okay. A tad bit saltier than I'd like. The mashed potatoes (odd choice of starch but whatever), was exactly that: an ice cream scoop of potato mashed up and nothing more. My dining partner's dish, a day's special braised short rib, was pretty okay as well. Nothing to write home about but nothing disappointing. Again, the same ice cream scoop of mashed potatoes.
We've eaten here on "normal" days and our experience was a thousand times better.
Christmas dinner at what I considered to be a Mountain View stalwart was I disappointment. Our meals were served barely lukewarm, the veal was tough bordering on over cooked. The waiters were literally running to serve diners and placing orders. They must have been short handed for Christmas evening. I expected more from an establishment that has been around for so many years.
We have come here for the last 5-6 years for Christmas dinner. The food is always great but the last 2 years the service has been terrible. We all decided that we need a new plan for next year. We ordered drinks and the tonic was not right so the drinks were remade and came back looking like there was lemonade or margarita mix in it (aka it was greenish/yellow) and still didn't taste right and then the third time the drink was made it had soda water in it and still no tonic. We had the same issue last year. Those of us who simply had water couldn't ever get our glasses filled. The waiter was very unfriendly and clearly had way too much going on that the service quality was highly lacking. We had to ask for things several times. While the food was great the service was enough to turn us away for future meals.
Dinner was a bit of a mess. Two orders of lasagne were slopped on to plates and served to us. The cheese on top was overdone and chewy and there were barely any lasagne noodles. My daughter ordered buttered penne and for $13.95 received little more than a kid's portion. Dessert was a fiasco. I ordered a lava cake for dessert. It was served ice-cold which makes it cold chocolate cake, not a lava cake. The maitre d refused to rectify the situation. He had a lot of people waiting for tables as it was Christmas. Lava cake should never be served cold under any circumstance and he had no right to be arrogant and rude. He just wanted us to leave so he could seat more people. I was very disappointed in what should have been a joyous occasion.
Restaurant management needs to control their reservations so that diners can have enough time to enjoy their meal.
My family and I came for Christmas dinner and we had a wonderful time as usual! I've been coming to Don Giovannis for over 10 + years and I've always enjoyed the quality of the food, the service and the ambiance. The wait staff are experienced and they know how to give the right amount of attention without being intrusive. It's a great place to dine for any occasion!
As usual, the food was good. Service is usually good but on this occasion the waiter was a little abrupt, not what I've come to expect at DG's! Pricing in line with menu selections.
Very good food ,nice atmosphere, huge portions reasonably priced
The food was great but the service was horrible. The waiter brought our meal 5 minutes after we ordered and completely forgot to bring our salads before the meal. He was rude and was rushing us out of the restaurant.
What a meal! The food was superb- very well cooked and promptly served. My eggplant and tomato pasta was fantastic, and I heard rave reviews of the pesto pasta from around the table. Our bottle of Chianti was lovely too - a good, fried-pleasing wine. The best aspect of the evening was the standout service of our waitress, who negotiated our table of 8 with composure and, miraculously, agreed to split the check 8 ways. I will definitely be back!
Overall great experience, excellent food (had veal), service staff attentive, but could have pick-up on queue for additional menus needed as my guests arrived without asking. Manager checked frequently but not too often. Noise level was getting quite high as more patrons came, so when it was it was not perfect for a business discussion, but ok. Loved the Creme Brulee!
Fabulous food, great service, but too loud for conversation.
Great food and service! The wine list is superb. Alittle noise from the large crowds enjoying the food and ambiance. We stsy at hotels close just to eat here.
We had the intimate seating right next to the front window so we could look out into beautifully lit Castro St. There was a Christmas tree right in the middle of the restaurant. It felt festive and special! However, overall, the food tasted just okay. Perhaps the dishes are healthier this way.
Simply an awesome restaurant starting with the owner, John and his wonderful crew.
Food was good service mediocre
Waiter rushed us had to ask for butter and water a couple of times
In general, the food was good as far as I was concerned (veal saltimbocca), but my wife's seafood dish was either overly rich, or contaminated, for she was quick sick for 24 hours after the meal. Parenthetically, the milk served with coffee was curdled.
The food was terrific, service was right on, and our friends loved the place.
The restaurant did a great job accommodating our large group!
We've been to Ristorante Don Giovanni before and have always had good food and good service.
