Our dinner for four was great, start to finish. Warmly but not gushingly greeted. Drink at the bar: ‘tender was classic good: attentive, understated. Our waiter was outstanding: informative, with restrained flourish. The food was excellent. The decor: warm and intimate. Nice touches to recognize our birthday celebration. Low noise level. RIS is a gem!
I have not been to RIS in a while so I thought I would give it another try. Sadly, the food is mediocre and not worth the price.
This is the second time I have lunched at Ris in the past couple of weeks. I thought the abysmal service the first time was a fluke, as normally the restaurant has good, quality food and good service. But the second time we waited an hour to get our lunches (one a soup and sandwich and the other a salad - not time intensive orders); and when they came they were the wrong things. One diner has very severe (could be lethal) allergies and the meal came with things she could not eat even though she had gone through that with the wait staff first. To get our bill, I had to wander around the bar and into the kitchen to even find a staff person to ask for it after having waited for a good half hour for it. This was a business lunch and the service and food were absolutely awful. They have lost a fairly regular customer.
So many better alternatives. Food unspectacular. Long wait between appetizer and main course. Wasn’t even busy.
Think the place may be in a long slow decline. Many better alternatives in the area.
One of the highlights of any trip to DC is the opportunity to dine at RIS. Highest quality ingredients become a memorable experience in the hands of a thoughtful and imaginative chef. Never disappointed.
Ris continues to excel. we have visited several times over the last few years and it never fails to disappoint. Staff are attentive and knowledgeable and food is outstanding.
We had a lunch for friends and it was wonderful. The food was good, as usual, and the service was excellent. It was a great occasion, made better by Ris.
Our meals were fantastic. The whole snapper was presented well. I had the scallop ceviche, and the ramen. Both were delicious. The kitchen had run out of cookies when i went to order dessert, so that was somewhat disappointing. Aside from that, we had a great meal. It was moderately quiet, and private enough for our meetings as well.
Food was outstanding and would return for quality of food, but service and length of time to be served was not on par with a restaurant of this caliber.
Hello. Our waiter was extremely nervous and we told the staff that it was our 1 year anniversary and nothing was done to help us celebrate. We went here for out 6 month anniversary and it was great. This time, it was not good at all. Our waiter was condescending and not polite to his co-workers. We had trouble ordering and he went away too quickly so we had trouble ordering. I will not be going back her because of this experience. We could have had an amazing experience elsewhere.
Ris is one of our favorite DC restaurants, especially because it’s possible to have a romantic dinner and carry on a conversation in a relaxed atmosphere.
Absolutely excellent! Had Easter brunch here. Mimosas with Popsicles were great! Everything we ordered was outstanding. Highly recommend.
Over 2 hours for brunch! Request for a table by the window made on open table wasn’t honored even though there were many window tables available. Half the food was cold when it finally arrived, the other half came later. Bagels for salmon bagels arrived first, followed by salmon 10 minutes later. Medium burger was well done. Orders were mixed. Bread came 35 minutes after we sat down. Restaurant was only about half full. Management appeared non existent. Won’t go back.
As always, RIS delights in all ways. Scallop martini still a huge hit with me and the Portuguese fish soup delighted my wife. Service was excellent without being intrusive. We'll be back again and again.
I've been going to RIS probably at least once a month for many years. We love it. The menu has changed over the years, as you'd expect, and I miss some of the old items, but it continues to be good. I love the bartenders - they will work hard to make whatever you like. Save room for dessert!
Love this place. The food never disappoints. Fresh, tasty and seasonal menu. Clearly a lot of thought, creativity and effort goes into ensuring a great dining experience. Two thumbs up!
Excellent food. Good location and ambience.
Bar lunch is also excellent value.
Excellent selection of gin and cocktails with gin. Service was attentive. Server was able to answer all questions. Food was good, we both had the chicken milanese. Meyer Lemon cake was definitely worth trying.
Had a wonderful meal at Ris. The location is outstanding, right off Washington Circle by the Ritz in Foggy Bottom. We started at the bar—they have the best and most creative gin menu in all of DC. My martini was great, and my wife liked the Happy Hour red, which was a bargain at $5. We had Kennedy Center tickets so we ate at 6:00. Our waiter actually asked if we were going to the theater when he greeted us, which was a nice touch. He ensured we were done at 7:30.
The food was so good. We started with the mussels, and the owner let us do a half entree of her beer battered scallops. Both were perfect, well seasoned, flavorful and fresh. My wife had the Portuguese stew and I had the Steak Frites. The stew is a MUST order...full of seafood, depth of flavor, and so aromatic. We both dug to the bottom and savored every morsel from the bowl. My steak was cooked just right, and the quality of the meat was excellent. The frites had that nice crunch and bit of salt that had me digging in for more. It had a lovely sauce underneath that perfectly complimented the steak, and the veg was just right (sautéed spinach and tomatoes).
Even though we were stuffed we grabbed a quick coffee, and two of their desserts, a chocolate cake with raspberry, and a cake with vanilla ice cream. We really thought these were great finishers and we left extremely happy.
Atmosphere is welcoming, lighting is nice, great vibe and feel staff is amazing and the training was evident. The price was very reasonable and we left happy and look forward to going back soon.
Very nice atmosphere. Great service and good menu choices. Pricy for everyday but great for a special occasion.
A very enjoyable evening. The four of us explored the gin menu (50 choices!) and took advantage of the variety available on the menu—one vegetarian dish, Portuguese seafood stew, a chicken dish, and corned beef and cabbage. Excellent desserts also—I can’t remember the last time I had butterscotch pudding. We were able to converse easily, which is rare these days.
A big disappointment...we waited over 15 minutes to get anyone to pay attention to us. And although it was a Friday night the restaurant was not busy. Once we got heir attention service was ok. Unfortunately the food was also disappointing ... My friend ordered the scallops which came in a basket with fries...not what we expected at a "nice" restaurant. I had the chicken pot pie which was justb ok and the French fries were excellent. We would not go back there.
We love the DC restaurant scene - usually. This week, though, suffered through a terrible meal and bad service at RIS. Met a group for drinks and appetizers an hour before my actual reservation (7 pm). Restaurant was empty (6 pm).
Asked if we could have a booth for privacy. Staff said no, reserved. Gave us a table in middle. No one sat at empty booths between 6-7 pm. Waitress not very friendly or helpful. Very average charcuterie board, meats seemed like supermarket fare. Despite saying several times this group would be leaving at 7, and my friend is coming at 7 for dinner, waitress did not bring bill timely and took another 20 minutes for someone to clear off the table and re-set. Then, the waitress didn’t turn up and acted annoyed to serve us. As this was my birthday dinner for my friend, I felt terrible the night was starting out this way. Suffice it to say, things went down hill from there. We explained we wanted fish for dinner. The waitress recommended the special - but neglected to mention it was fried, and came with a full head and tail. Not exactly the “fish” we were looking for. The cauliflower dish was decent but really struggling to find a single redeeming quality to this place. Even the lighting (bright as day light cafeteria style) and ambience were bad. I owe my friend a birthday do over. Do not recommend RIS.
Another wonderful meal at Ris. Great flavors, service and ambience.
Basic problems with this establishment.
-cocktails prepared incorrectly
-food served 90 mins after ordered
-water not refilled
RIS was a BIG disappointment!
Sun. brunch was fabulous & our waiter superb. I highly recommend Ris for meals anytime of day.
Best waiter we have ever had at any restaurant anywhere! He made our special celebration even more special! So great for kids too!
Everything was excellent. Drinks, food, ambience, and service. Will definitely recommend it to friends.
Great food in a excellent area of DC, near Georgetown. Food was outstanding quality and good value for the price.
When you want great food, a relaxed but elegant setting, superb service, and a conversation where you can actually hear your companions, even at a table for six, go to Ris. Our group was supremely well taken care of and thus could fully enjoy each other's company. Ris has become our go-to downtown location.
We had such a great time! They have a “gin-ologist” who came over and helped us pick out drinks. Then, before we left, he returned with a house-made butterscotch-cello (think limoncello, but butterscotch!) The personalized touch to the service really made us feel special.
It had been a while since I'd been to RIS. It's still the same great place. Wonderful ambience. Great for romantic dinner or for business dinner or dinner with friends. Great service, friendly team of people and the bartender is awesome!
The woman at the host desk greeted me so graciously and seated me immediately even though I was very early and my friend had not arrived. She also assisted our server at one point. The other staff members were equally good. The lunch menu is wonderful, and the staff accommodated our request to share two different entrees, a delicious salad and the divine chicken pot pie. The salad was split in the kitchen, and we were given extra plates to share the pot pie. It's an attractive dining room where you can really have a conversation.
Great food (catch of the day, lemon-parmesan chicken) from prix fixe pre-theater menu. Great service with just the right amount of attention--not obtrusive or annoying. Waiter was careful that we finish in time to reach theater before curtain. Great experience. Will repeat again soon.
Great atmosphere, delicious food and outstanding service.
Loved the food and the atmosphere!
We had a delightful lunch after a Kennedy Center morning concert. The special of the day, scallops in a light batter, was delicious, as was the trout. And the cookies that came with the "box lunch" menu were wonderful. This was a very pleasant surprise!
Really good lunch
RIS has never disappointed! Food is always excellent. Brussel sprouts are absolutely delicious.
Wonderful beef carpaccio, ample enough to be a main dish.
The food was great. I ordered the daily special, quiche and a salad and it was done perfectly. My colleagues enjoyed their steak frites and grilled salmon. The price was very reasonable. We sat in a booth and that turned out to be not that comfortable. The cushions were too soft and I sunk into them too much. I would not recommend a booth there to anyone, like me , that has occasional back pain.
