RIS offers three beautiful private dining spaces for every occasion from business dinners to wedding rehearsals. The State Room is our smallest and most intimate dining room, seating a maximum of 10 guests. The Federal Room seats up to 35 guests, and comfortably accommodates up to 45 for a standing cocktail reception. The Main Dining Room accommodates 40 guests, and when coupled with the adjacent State Room, seats to 50 diners. We also have other options for group dining, including two banquettes that seat up to 16 guests. Great seasonal menu - was delighted to see (and order) the curried caulifower entree for the vegetarian gourmet at our table as well as the whole fried snapper and 2 grilled salmons for the others. We shared our sides and salads to ensure everyone got a taste of all that appealed to us. Fantastic menu - delicate balance among vegetable choices and sauces. Each was distinctive and perfectly seasoned. Great wine menu too! His is a "gem" on the West Side. Perfect place for our friends' dinner after the Millennium Stage event at Kennedy Center. We will be back soon!
The food and the service for brunch on Sunday was very good. However, the ambiance of the place is a little off for a brunch place. One side of the wall is red/organge reminding me of Thai resturants or even like a diner place, while the other side is white/ sunshine which gives a modern look but the inside red wall interior kind of kills it and didn’t make the balance. Then the music was like... radio pop100. I’m leaving interior recommendation for this place because I see so much potential in bringing young brunch eaters to this place if the ambience was just better (the food and the service was amazing though!).
I've been to Ris at least five times and I've always thought the food was good and the service was fine, but not stellar. That was the case this time as well. Rack of lamb was a lot of food--2 meaty double chops, a large "cake" of potatoes, a small portion of spinach. Food was fine. This time the service was more lackadaisical than in the past. Took a while for a waitperson to come, took about 10 minutes to get a cocktail. Wine with dinner took about 15 minutes and came out after the entree was delivered. Also, Ris no longer has valet parking so you will likely end up parking in one of the hotel parking structures nearby. Parking was $26 on top of the restaurant bill, which is higher than you'd expect. Feels more expensive than it's worth.
My host mentioned that this restaurant was where chefs dine. My father was a chef in Pittsburgh and I haven't eaten a chicken pot pie since his passing 10 years ago so I wouldn't be disspaointed. I was brave enough to order and I was so pleased. Dad would have approved - made me smile with wonderful memories. Thank you!
the food was really excellent -- fresh, imaginative, and delicious. many restaurants nowadays include one or maybe two decent vegetable-based entrées -- but RIS has quite a number of excellent choices for people who aren't all that into meat (and of course, plenty of meat-based dishes, as well -- never fear, carnivores). i really appreciated the variety of options, and the presentation and taste of everything was superb. the service wasn't the most attentive i've ever experienced, but in their defence, it was a miserable evening and half our party cancelled at the last minute, so perhaps they had a reason to be a bit distant. (still, everyone was friendly and never appeared the least bit put off by the late change to our table number, so props to them for that.) i hope to return very soon to try more of their menu.
Lovely restaurant...it has all the right combination of things -- urban space, not overly large dining room, booths. Food is delicious and nicely plated, very attentive, friendly service. A nice mix of generations dining there. Would def like to return for dinner, from the look of the menu. Four or five entrees is a mark for me of a smaller restaurant that will do what it does very well.
All in all, I was pleased with our experience at Ris. I felt the food was above average, and the prix fixe brunch menu was a good value. The ambiance was nice, as this place was quiet and not bustling, which we appreciated because we could actually talk. I did notice that some of the walls of the restaurant were quite grubby, which is not what you would expect of a restaurant of this quality in this location. I would suggest they touch up with paint!
As always, great food and lovely service. Had the trout nicoise which was delicious, as was the butterscotch pudding. (and I don't even like pudding!) A great neighborhood gem oft overlooked these days due to newer, flashier places with higher prices, poorer food and service. Love Ris!
This was a most disappointing meal in almost every respect. We have supped at Ris on several occasions; I hope this was an anomaly. Our waiter was inept. He disappeared for long stretches. We waited interminably between courses. Our entrees were delivered to the wrong table, leading to still further delays. The high point of the meal was the side salad we had as an appetizer. Based on an email trumpeting Julia Child's cassoulet, I ordered same. It was pitiful-- a plate of white beans with some sliced sausage and a huge slab of very fatty pork belly. I've made Julia Child's cassoulet and it does even call for pork belly! Missing were any of the casserole crust and as well as any indication of the pork, lamb or duck specified in the recipe. While my wife ate her entree, I reordered and waited. We both had the Portugese seafood stew which had plentiful fresh seafood, but was otherwise unremarkable. Desserts were also disappointing. I had an apple tart with lemon cardoman ice cream. The dough was heavy and the apple was cut into tiny squares similar to mince meat. The ice cream was too sweet and the lemon overpowered the cardoman. After dinner we were "treated" to homemade limoncello. Remarkably, when the bill was presented there was no adjustment for the false advertising and poor service. Ris needs to put someone in charge who can better control the staff and up its game in the kitchen.
I often go to Ris because I find their food great and creative. I have allergies to garlic and onions and they always manage to accommodate me. The food was great even this time, the service was not as good as usual. My preferred waiter was not working that day and the one we had did not meet expectations.
Ris was a last-minute dinner choice, but came highly recommended. My guest and I chose vegetarian options for both our appetizer and entrees. The food was creative and delicious. The scallop salad margarita appetizer was one of the best things I've ever tasted! We didn't have dessert, but the cappuccino was lovely. The expresso, however, a trifle disappointing, but that's a quibble. Overall, I'm happy to add Ris to my 'top flight restaurants' list.
Ris has proven to be a fine addition to the Foggy Bottom neighborhood. The cuisine is innovative, changing, and always high quality. The wait staff is excellent. When I have needed a venue for a business meal, I have relied on it and my guests are consistently impressed. The Chef is also a generous contributor to ongoing, worthwhile neighborhood endeavors.
I had one of the best meals I've had in a long time at RIS. The scallop margarita appetizer was amazing, with balanced delicious flavors that made me slow down to savor every bite. I followed that with the Pepita crusted salmon, which was equally spectacular. The combination of flavors and textures was exquisite, and here too I found myself slowing down to savor (and rave!) over every bite. I don't live in DC, but next time I get there I will definitely put RIS on my must-do list.
We went to RIS for a birthday brunch. We have had brunch here a couple of times and always enjoyed the experience. However RIS has gone downhill in both the caliber of the food and the service. Their brunch menu has fewer options and our order was finally taken about 30 minutes in because of the slow bar service. Every course was served with about thirty minutes on average in between and we had to asked for the service of desserts. It pretty much ruined the experience. We sat down at 1 pm and finally got out of there at 3pm And this was with hardly anyone in the restaurant!
We will not be back.
I love RIS and have been going there for years. Lately it seems like the menu choices have been shrinking and the prices have been growing - by a lot. Our server Karim was wonderful, shout out to him. Good wine choices. I think I prefer the RIS of 3-5 years ago to the RIS of now. (I know it's her signature dish but $45 for rack of lamb seemed over the top.)
As always, RIS provided us with delicious food. I've sung the praises of the chef/s there for years and have spent some very special occasions there. This visit, however, was beyond disappointing in terms of service. I haven't had such an apathetic attitude from a hostess and server in quite a long time, especially at such a highly regarded restaurant. It took 18-20 minutes for our server to even acknowledge our presence at our table. She did not take our drink order until those 20 minutes had passed, let alone make us feel welcome. She simply announced when she finally came by that "she was ready now". Really? I would have hoped that even after such a delay, she would have at least apologized and doubled her efforts, but she was apathetic at best to us most of the evening. It is not good business practice at a higher end restaurant to just go through the motions as a server, because you know that in the end your tab will be high (we were a table of 4) and you will undoubtedly receive 20% gratuity regardless. At a place like RIS, when the food is so stellar, it is very disappointing that we'd receive anything but top notch service as well. It left such a bad impression that I don't know if I will return any time soon, even though I think the food is fantastic. Patrons like to feel like they matter, not that they are just warm bodies at a table.
