I had been by the restaurant on many occasions and when an organization came into town and were staying at a nearby hotel, I chose RIS as place for dinner. Given the number of good restaurants in DC, I simply cannot recommend RIS as a regular option. Service was good, ambiance OK, but the food was disappointing.

Kind of a disjointed menu, but the food was very good once you figured out what to order. Service friendly, but slow. Place was empty, which is always a red flag, and made it lack ambience, but would go back for the food.
Great food and service. Finding parking may be a little challenging.

I adore Ris. It's more of a neighborhood gem than a destination restaurant but the cooking is always top notch. The gin bar is fabulous if you are in to martinis and gin drinks. And Chef Ris is always on hand. It's a place that always makes you feel at home and happy.
We know the chef/owner and eat here regularly. The menu has changed over the years, but her signature dishes of the scallop margarita (starter) and lamb (main - once per week) are always amazing. Butterscotch pudding is my favorite dessert. Ris makes pies and sides for the holidays you can order and take home to eat there.
Maybe it was just a bad day, but service was poor - we waited a long time to be seated despite a reservation and empty tables. The food was just ok.

We went to Ris to celebrate our birthdays because we wanted a place where we could be sure we would have a delicious meal and a great experience. Our menus had a "Happy Birthday!" banner across the top! What a nice touch! We had the kale and brussels spouts salad and roasted spaghetti squash for appetizers, trout and crown of cauliflower for entrees, butterscotch pudding and tiramisu for dessert. Each dish was delicious and presented beautifully. Ris has a unique way of combining distinct flavors. Another thing that makes Ris so great is that there are several options for vegetarians like me. Our service was pleasant and excellent, as was the ambiance . I highly recommend Ris for a comfortable, delicious experience where you're treated like royalty. Ris is not located in a busy area; it's worth making the trip.
It’s not what it used to be. Ris used to be really quite good. This is the second time in the last 6 months that we tried it. It was pretty good, but not what it used to be, which was quite good.
I had been to RIS on several occasions. Always had an outstanding time. Well.....not this past Sunday.... I was meeting friends to celebrate their recent marriage and purchased a gift certificate for them. The manager was terrible.... it seemed that I was bothering her... she didn’t even mention that I needed to fill out the certificate. Unbelievable. NOT impressed. Will NOT be going back. The only descent and helpful person there was the person greeting us at the door. Not sure if there was only one waiter for the whole restaurant but he was not very helpful. Kept forgetting our requests. Had to ask for the same things quite a few times. RIS used to be a 10 now it’s a 2. Food was very salty and a bit stale. TOO bad...
Enjoyed brunch seated at a nice, small booth. Food and service were excellent. The presentation of dishes was beautiful. My salad could have some from a summer garden. My huevos rancheros and my friend's eggs benedict were beautiful. Nothing was over-salted. The baked breakfast treats were tasty and served with excellent jam and butter.
Last minute, some friends and I decided to go out and discovered that it was Restaurant Week. The Restaurant Week menu here was a great value and the $5 upcharges for certain items was totally reasonable. I imagine that our dining experience was a bit different than normal, as they were filming a reality tv show next to our table. We enjoyed the hilarious conversation, but I don't think that the single woman at another table did (she just kept looking over disapprovingly - lol). While the front of the restaurant was busy, the back of the restaurant was pretty empty because of the filming crew setup. I imagine that our server was less attentive than normal because of all that was going on, but it also took a very long time to get all of our dishes. Nonetheless, it was all delicious and I plan to return in the future.
Outstanding white tablecloth restaurant, but not formal! Food was excellent in both preparation and presentation. Staff was attentive. Can't wait to go back!!!
My three friends and I love Ris. This is the second time we have gone together and we will definitely go again, probably during the next DC Restaurant Week. The ambience is great--quiet, attractive, calm, good service, and delicious food. We used the menu for the Jan., 2018 Restaurant Week and found plenty of dishes to suit all of our palates and my gluten free needs. My shortribs were outstanding. Everyone liked their dishes. The only thing I didn't like was the butterscotch pudding, but it was the only gluten free dessert so I tried it, even though i don't like butterscotch. It was so so.
We love this place and I hope that now that DC Restaurant Week has been extended for a second week due to the shutdown that a lot of people will go there this week.
I liked it for brunch because the kale brussels sprout salad was excellent, and the Huevos Rancheros was also very good. The staff was nice, and I liked the mimosa.
We went to RIS for Sunday brunch. It was restaurant week, so my expectations for a great meal were a little low. Most restaurants give smaller portions, lower quality items, etc for their restaurant week menu. This was definitely not the case here. Sam was our waiter. He was excellent. The food was fresh, beautifully presented and large portions. If I'm ever in the DC area again, I won't miss out on another meal here.
The hostess was fantastic, so friendly and joked with us like she’d known us for awhile. Our waiter was patient and made great suggestions. The restaurant week deal was such a great deal. Food was delicious and I still think about that tiramisu. Looking for to coming back to try brunch.
Our meal was outstanding - mussels, fisherman’s stew, butterscotch pudding - absolutely first rate ....Michelin level. Our waiter was also exceptionally skillful and knowledgeable. The hostess at the front desk, a warm and lovely person, was a paragon of helpfulness - finding us the perfect table for our needs. Altogether a 5 star evening.
Made first visit to RIS during DC Restaurant Week. The food was delicious and Gregory, our server, was professional and attentive but not intrusive. The beef short ribs with roasted brussels sprouts, beets, etc were the perfect comfort food on a snowy night. Both the tiramisu and butterscotch pudding offered for dessert were fabulous. We were very pleased to see Nero d'Avola offered by the glass; one seldom finds it on a wine menu, much less by the glass. Restaurant Week offers a great opportunity to see what high-end restaurants have to offer. We definitely want to return to RIS. RIS does not offer valet parking but does validate parking for a reduced price at the Ritz Carlton self-parking garage around the corner and another parking garage nearby.

So my less-than-great experience began the night before, when my phone rang AT TEN P.M and it was someone from Ris asking if I still was planning to come for lunch the next day as per my OpenTable reservation. I had just arrived from the West Coast and was asleep. I asked the woman if she thought this was a good time to phone people, and she said quite huffily, well she had been very busy and this was her first free moment. I have tried to ponder whether I am being unreasonable but I don't think I am. I understand that no-shows are a problem for restaurants but there still was nothing to prevent me from just not going there the next day. Calling me at 10 PM was not going to guarantee my presence.
Secondly, I had asked for a quiet table in my notes on OpenTable, because this was an important working lunch for me and I wanted to be able to converse with my counterpart. Instead we were seated at a table right in the middle of the action. It was very loud and it was hard to talk.
I never go to Ris for the food, I go because for me, the location is very convenient. So I was not surprised that the food was as usual, vanilla average. I will say that the waitperson was very nice, leaving aside an initial moment when he noticed that our table had only one menu, looked about, saw another one lying ON THE FLOOR, picked it up and handed it to me. Super-appetizing. Upon noting my somewhat startled look, he did realize that this was not optimal and he brought me a different one. Just plan paper sheets, so no reason to be that thrifty with them...
This was my first time at RIS and perhaps my last. I recognize that I went during lunchtime so a slightly longer wait was expected, but I didn't expect to sit down for a 12:30 pm reservation for 2 people and receive my first course at 2:05 pm. And it seemed like I would've waited longer if I hadn't asked our waiter where our food was. The service was awful which is unfortunate given that the food was quite delicious. I was really disappointed with my experience here.
Reviewing the restaurant week dinner menu ,I found the appetizer ( fried oysters and pancetta) and the desert (tiramisu) excellent.
The main course (chicken cutlet was dry and the breading not particularly good.
