Food was fantastic. Service was disappointing. Made reservations a week out via OpenTable, which is linked from their website. Arrived and was told they didn't have our reservation as OpenTable reservations weren't available at the moment, or they weren't accepting them - we were not provided a detailed explanation. However after the host/server walked away, we clearly saw our name and reservation (and my cell phone number which could have been used to contact me to tell me there was a problem...) there in their reservation book.
When I called this to the attention of the host/server, he didn't seem to care and snipped at us that our table was ready. In fairness, his priority was getting us a table, which it should have been, but I would have appreciated understanding what the problem was with our reservation, and there is definitely no reason to be hostile.
Ultimately they had a way of making us feel unwelcome - from our server walking away while we were asking questions (not deliberately, just not realizing we were talking), seeming unwilling to answer questions, having things cleared before we were done with them, and the issue with the reservation up front.
Because of this, while the food was fantastic (really some of the best ceviche I've ever had) - I don't really have any interest in returning.
Food is excellent with good service, we were there Friday night and they have live music, I really enjoy the ambiance.
Our server was amazing
The back wall has a gigantic mural of Machu Picchu and Rio de Janeiro, and that's what Rio's is all about: South American cuisine with a focus on Peru along with dishes from Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and other countries.
Diners all get an order of fried bread made with tapioca flour (gluten free, if that's your jam) served with chimichurri sauce and a jalapeño sauce that's the right combination of spicy and creamy.
For appetizers, we went with a tamale and an order of wontons stuffed with steak, tomato, and onions. Peruvian tamales are different than their Mexican counterparts, but are every bit as delicious. For the main course, we went with cerviche and breast of chicken rolled in panko, filled with asparagus, roasted red peppers, spinach and provolone cheese, that's topped with algrarrobina sauce. The cerviche comes with sweet potatoes and dried plantains, which are an excellent counterpart to the tang of the cerviche. The chicken is paired with a Peruvian fried rice that's similar to what you know, but deliciously different.
Dessert was churros filled with caramel and paired with a chocolate dipping sauce, also delicious. The cocktails we had we fine, but nothing special.
For two adults ordering appetizers, main course, cocktails, and dessert, we got out for $80 before tip. We deemed that an excellent value for the quality and amount of food we got. If you're a fan of South American cuisine or are looking to treat your taste buds to something different, give it a shot. It was absolutely excellent.
We recently returned from a trip to South America (Chile, Argentina and Brazil) and we were desperately searching for a Caipirinha to remind us of our trip...Rio did not disappoint. They actually made it better by preparing a premium version with Champagne.
Beyond the drinks the food was exceptional. We tried the Peruvian sampler, chicken and regular ceviche. We will be going back to explore and sample the rest of the menu.
Our waiter was Danny and he was great with explaining the menu and in preparing the drinks.
Honestly this has become one of our favorite restaurants, we only wish we new about it earlier.
Chicken quinoa salad is amazing...
Our experience was wonderful. A great spot for a date, but also capable of accommodating a large crowd.
Lots to try on the menu- with images and helpful waitstaff to guide you.
Most importantly, the food was amazing. Already planning to go back!
We were there for dinner on Christmas Day and really enjoyed it. Wonderful food, great service. We will be returning to try some more menu items.
Food was amazing!!!
Ceviche wraps are AMAZING
Such a unique restaurant. Great food, beautiful decor, and friendly staff. The lamb chops were superb, highly recommended.
Very creative food full of wonderful flavors. Wait staff is very friendly and accommodating.
The food and service was fantastic! This was our first time having dinner at Rio's and it's now the best place we ever eaten at. We can't wait to return and try other delicious dish. Our server Lisa was amazing! She took the time to explain some of the dishes and was very attentive. She made our experience even better.
Me and a date were staying at Eaglewood Resort up the road and ran into some complications with the dining there. So I hopped on OpenTable and found Rio's. Reviews looked strong and pictures painted a decent picture. Didn't do it justice!
This place had an elegant and interesting décor, mom-and-daughter live music combination (we were here on a Friday night - probably a weekend thing), and a very knowledgeable server!
We ordered one of the authentic Peruvian appetizer samplers and were delighted with the quality; powerful, contrasting flavors all around. We split the steak platter, which features a Skirt, Tenderloin, and New York Strip. Ordered medium rare on all three and they came out perfect. The skirt left a lot to be desired, but the NY Strip and Tenderloin were top notch. Not the greatest steak I've ever had, but a great complement to the experience.
Overall, if you're in the area, this is a solid choice. As a city guy, however, I wouldn't say this would be worth a drive; you could find comparable food experiences in the city. But for the suburban foodie, this would be a welcomed restaurant in the rotation!
Rio's is a lovely restaurant for any occasion or great meal. We were celebrating a birthday but went for the food and live music. We had chicken and fish and really enjoyed the introductory appetizer. Service was great. We will definitely return; even for appetizers at the bar.
Absolutely perfect evening, delicious food great waitstaff very attentive. We were a party of six and loved every bite from appetizer to desert even the coffee was good!
Awesome. Been going here for years!!!
The soups are tasty and the appetizer salads are huge (enough for 3 people). I did not enjoy the dish I ordered, but I look forward to coming back and trying another one.
It's the most delicious South American food in the suburbs and possibly Chicago.
Food is authentic and delicious! Loved this place! Only thing is they had a live band Friday night and the music was insanely loud. Could barely hear each other at our table.
Overall enjoyed the food.Cerviche was very good. Restaurant only had three tables with customers (that had already been served) in the dining room (some tables outside filled) yet the server seemed to keep rushing us to order. There were plenty of other servers. The chef was on vacation we were told. With the outdoor dining the door to the restaurant was left open to the outside and I ended up with mosquito bites (I sat inside so not to be bitten as I have allergic reactions to bites). Before we finished our meal a different server (Steve) took over telling us Mike, our original server had to leave for a family situation/emergency. We left sooner than we would have as I kept getting bit by mosquitos and was uncomfortable. So overall the dining experience was okay, not stellar.
Great except music was too loud. Hard to have conversation.
We had never been there before, so four of us went on a Monday night to celebrate a friend's birthday. There was only a few other tables that were occupied, and yet the (bar) service seemed slow... after ordering our wine we had to wait quite a while before it came (the same could also be said for refills), and our server never checked on us while we were waiting, so that was a little frustrating. Having said that, however, the food was fantastic and the serving sizes were more than sufficient (and we didn't have to wait overly long for it)....they have a very extensive menu so it wasn't hard for each of us to find something we wanted to try, and we were each pleased with our choices from among both the appetizers and the main meals. Only one of us was familiar with South American food (he thought it seemed very authentic and reminded him of his time spent there), so our server took the time to explain each dish before we ordered it, which was very helpful. All in all, it was a very good experience (not withstanding the wait for our wine), and I'll definitely plan on going back and would recommend it to others, although it's a little on the expensive side so I'll probably save it for special occasions only.
A flavourful yet carbohydrate heavy meal
6 of us shared the assorted appetizer plate that (the one with ceviche) that was excellent. There is a wide variety of main course dishes that all look delicious and interesting. I had the grilled beef kabob as did others. Someone also ordered the Rio "lasagna" that was very good.
food was amazing!
I will never understand why this place isn't crowded. Maybe it's because it was a weekday. I've been here a few times and have had great food and great service. I try to order something different each time, and have not been disappointed. This time I tried the Pollo Enrollado. The chicken was moist inside and crispy on the outside. That isn't always the case with a roulade, so I was pretty happy. The Peruvian fried rice was the perfect amount and was full of flavor. I will warn though, there were some hot peppers in there, so it was a little spicy when I bit into one. The overall dish tough is not too hot or spicy. I am looking forward to coming here again and trying something new!
It was my birthday dinner with my two great friends :) great food and live music :) definitely my new favorite place
Really good food. Had to send the wife's mahi back because it was way underdone (or a bad piece of fish). They remade it and it was excellent, although that was 15 minutes after mine had arrived (so we took it to go). Had the comped that, the night would have been perfect. I certainly want to try the place again.
It was badly lit and hard to see where we were sitting. Also, a suggestion for future events, make sure to keep your classic menu items on your custom menu because people enjoy these and you are losing customers based on not providing these as an exception. Our family was expecting to enjoy the classics, but was forced to stick to the menu only.
Mothers Day meal
The food and service are wonderful. Our favorite restaurant.
I am a regular and I love the food and options. Everything food wise is a rave. I know that everything is hand crafted and that is what makes it great. Service is VERY slow, you have to always looks for them, and they do not check back or keep you informed. They are great and caring but not PRESENT! Fix this, it is holding your restaurant back.
We only had the appetizers, but they were excellent! Interesting decor too.
The food was excellent and the server took extra time to discuss dietary issues that two of our party had. They were both very pleased with their choices. The only serious complaint was the noise level.
We drive 40 minutes here practically once a week and get the same thing every time. Their ceviche a los 3 ajies is so delicious. We are always trying to find good places to eat peruvian but no one does it better than Rios.
Great place with a unique cuisine. Meals were flavorful and tasted fresh. There are also pictures on the menu to help pick from the many varieties that are offered.
Celebrating a Birthday
Awesome food, service & ambiance. A must restaurant to go to!
