Wonderful service, food, convenient location and easy parking.
Inventive Southwestern dishes served in an entertaining setting. The outdoor tables were very pleasant at night.
There is a new menu as of this week. It is not extensive but everything we had was very delicious and well presented. The different sauces on each dish were the secret to their successes.
The Rio Grill has obviously changed management . We are long- term regulars. We wer coming to celebrate a birthday. Was surprised that they no longer decorate table! It was a rainy Sun nite , so maybe this was second crew. But service was not friendly. After 1 hour no waiter came to take dessert choices. It was a school nite. We then just kept asking for a check. Finally after 10 mins , the waiter came and we asked for check. But then he said “ but isn’t this a birthday?” My daughter said yes so they brought a nice dessert with no extra spoons AND NO CHECK. Yo wait 20 mins after table cleared was weird on a not full evening. We also missed the complimentary bread service. No more sourdough! Now you must order an herb bread, which we didn’t because our main meals were being served. Overall not fun!
I miss the butcher paper on the tables and the crayons. All restaurants have table clothes. Rio Grill is intended to be more fun.
This is the restaurant I always miss when I am not in Carmel. The fire roasted artichoke is just spectacular every time. The salmon, the chicken, their burger…it’s all done so well, beautiful presentation and DELICIOUS!
What a gem tucked away in the Carmel Valley!! The luck was amazing as well as the grilled artichoke and bread bidding was yummy too!! Definitely check it out when on Carnel
We have been coming to Rio Grill for years. My parents have lived in Carmel over 50 years. We celebrated my moms birthday which was wonderful with rose petals on the table. Our service was very slow and no refills on water after asking twice.
The food was great. Wine very expensive more so than other restaurants in the area.
Ahi salad was excellent as were the shoestring onion rings. I was a bit put off that they charged for bread. Also the ollaberry tart was ver disappointing for $10. Not many berries, very gelatinous and a lot of crust, not very good.
Love the food. Tim the waiter did a great job and chef is amazing. Thank you Eduardo C !
Artichoke as always was fabulous the skirt steak delicious Big disappointment was not the bread you have always had but rolls you now pay for and not as good. The tables in the bar are sticky even though they are cleaned. Please use butcher paper to cover them or something. We are out of towners and go here whenever we are visiting which is several times a year since you first opened
Everything really was wonderful, especially server and service. Love music was too, too loud which made the early part of meal uncomfortable- once music ended all was perfect. Music is reason for four stars, otherwise would be five
Thank you for your review. We're glad you enjoyed the food and service, and appreciate the feedback about the music. We'll be sharing it to get even better at what we do. Hope to see you again soon!
The meals were tasty but not memorable. Service was a bit slow on account of COVID limitations but very friendly and attentive. The Rio Grill is always a good go-to place for lunch.
B level food quality and service. Will explicitly upcharge if you ask for a drink “on the rocks.”
Great food as always, lovely service. Chose outdoors, with our own propane heater
Delicious seasonal mojito. We shared calamari, onion stack, caprese,& fire roasted artichoke , each of which was delicious & came with a home made dipping sauce-even the ketchup. I had the halibut special, which was great. The others enjoyed prawns with pasta, stuffed poblano,&1/2 roasted chicken. We shared the ollallieberry cobbler & flourless chocolate cake-yummy!
Thank you for the fantastic review. We're so happy you chose to dine with us and try so many of our fan favorites! We always do our best to keeps our "Rio Classics" on the menu while bringing in new additions with local and seasonal flavors to keep you excited. See you again soon!
We've been enjoying Rio Grill for years. It's always fun, with good service and delicious, interesting food.
Our reservation was instantly honored, the waiter was polite and helpful. The food was outstanding.
Thank you for the wonderful review! We look forward to seeing you again soon.
Such a lovely staff! Thank you so much!!! Kathleen R
The food was not good at all
Stacked onion rings came as a "greasy hay stack"
The mushroom tamale was barely warm and mushy
And my wedge salad dressing was a vinaigrette blue cheese grayish color
I wouldn't recommend this place at all
As always the food was excellent. The charred salad was delicious. Our server was attentive but didn’t hover. The hostess was always very welcoming.
Thank you Lauren for the wonderful review!
Outside seating had an ample number of heaters to keep the chill at bay. Our server was pleasant and efficient. Food was excellent. Salmon BLT was prepared perfectly as was the shrimp pasta entrée.
Thank you! We hope to host you again soon.
Our party had three different choices from the dinner menu. Maybe it is just my personal taste, but the stuffed poblano chili did not have much flavor and too much quinoa. It came drowning in a bowl of red sauce that I had the waiter remove, perhaps that’s where the flavor was going to be. Some cheese would have added to the flavor.
The famous Artichoke was not as good as it used to be. Salads and onion rings were good. The marinated Skirt Steak was a table favorite! The desserts were all unbelievably amazing! We brought our own wine so can’t comment on bar service. The service was good, and the place was fun with great local energy.
Thank you for the great review. We're glad you enjoyed everything. Our chef has kept a close eye on the artichokes this year to provide the best quality available. We'll share your feedback and continue to work with our purveyors to deliver the artichoke you've been use to in the past. Hope to see you again soon!
It was a beautiful day so we ate outside. I had the Salmon BLT sandwich. What a delicious surprise. I decided to take a friend next week just so I can order it again!

Very loud restaurant. Hard to have a good conversation.
Hi Allan, I'm sorry to hear you were unable to fully enjoy your visit due to the volume in the restaurant. While we can't always control the noise level, we do strive to offer every guest a great experience. Please let us know next time and we may be able to accommodate a quieter area. Thank you, Gabe de la Vega, General Manager
THIS USED TO BE A FANTASTIC GO TO RESTAURANT. HOWEVER, SINCE TONY TOLLNER SOLD HIS RESTAURANTS, QUALITY, TASTE, AND SERVICE HAVE SUFFERED. JUST TRY AND SEE IF YOU MIGHT AGREE. A VERY BAD LUNCH EXPERIENCE.
Hi, We're normally known for our exceptional attention to detail, and we regret we missed the mark. I've sent you a direct message to learn more about your recent visit. I look forward to your reply. Thank you, Gabe de la Vega, General Manager

Hi, Thank you so much for your 5 star review! We are honored to be your go to spot! Thank you!
I had a last minute birthday dinner there last nite and it was so great! The table had rose petals on it; the service was great; the food was great; birthday desert was great. We had a lovely time! We lived here many years ago and always loved coming to Rio Grill, and I'm so glad to see everything is still top notch! Gold stars to the hostess and our server.
Hi, We love creating memorable experience for our guests and we are thrilled to hear you had a special experience. Thank you for your support!
Birthday dinner for two friends. Great meal. Like the fact it was not so crowded on a Monday evening.
Hi Bogie, Thank you for your review and we look forward to making your next visit a 5 star experience!
Best risotto I’ve ever had and other dishes were excellent, too. Only negative is the noise level is pretty high and inside seating was too close for Covid.
Hi Eric, We love that you enjoyed our risotto! Thank you for your feedback. Our guests' experience is important to us and we value your comments. Thank you, Gabe de la Vega, General Manager
Always the best service in town. Food always exceeds expectations.
Hi Barbara, It was our pleasure to serve you! Thank you for your support, Gabe de la Vega, General Manager
We have been dining at Rio Grill over the past 10years. Food is always consistent.
Grill artichoke and the calamari our favorite appetizers. The fresh fish is always outstanding with added pizzazz of flavors. Ribs are also our go to selection with a nice smoky flavor.
Hi Elgat, Thank you for your support over the last 10 years, it means the world to us! I'm so glad we continue to offer you such a consistent experience. Come back and see us again soon!
Service was prompt and friendly. Food was perfect. Highly recommend Artichoke and Smoked Chicken. Wines by the glass were fun and suited menu perfectly.
Hi Erin, Thank you so much for your review! Glad you had a wonderful experience and we look forward to your next visit. Cheers, Gabe de la Vega, General Manager
Disappointed that the restaurant stopped serving food at 8 PM. Despite appearances, Carmel is not a retirement community!
Always good food and prompt, professional service.
We appreciated your continued patronage David and look forward to providing you with the consistency you've come to expect at Rio Grill.
We were seated within minutes of our arrival. We were soon greeted warmly by Kat (Cat?). She made great suggestions for drinks and the meal. She made us feel so relaxed and we were laughing like old friends in no time. We had the Charred Romaine Heart and Basket of House-Made Herb-Truffle Bread with Maple-Chipotle Butter. The salad was so flavorful, and the bread was warm and tasty with the butter - don't skip the butter. I had the Atlantic Salmon and it was delicious! Kat said, "The Chipotle-Lime Vinaigrette with the salmon is everything to me", and she was correct (so good!). My husband had the Surf & Turf Special and had no regrets. We had the cheesecake and apple bread pudding for dessert, and they were a perfect ending for a perfect meal. We will definitely return to Rio Grill the next time were in Monterey.
Hi Cole, It's great to hear you had such an excellent visit. Kat is beloved by all she serves and will be thrilled to hear how she positively impacted your experience. Come back and visit us again soon! Thank you, Gabe de la Vega, General Manager
Rio Grill continues to be one of our favorites. We had a party of 7 on a Friday evening. We had an outdoor reservation but they were able to move us inside because the outside as a little too cool and breezy. The group enjoyed shirt steaks, shrimp pasta and ribs. The service was a little slower than normal probably because of staffing shortages. Rio Grill is still one of the best stops on the Peninsula.
