Rio Grande has been our "go to" place in Boulder County for Tex Mex food for many years, and the food has never disappointed. The house margaritas are also a MUST HAVE, and the sopaipillas or fried ice cream are a perfect end to dinner. This was an early (4:30pm) New Years Eve dinner with friends, and by the time we left at 6pm the restaurant was filling up. Being one block off the Pearl Street Mall we were able to enjoy the beautiful Christmas lights decorating the mall after dinner. In good weather, we enjoy eating outside, either on the rooftop patio or on the street-side patio where we can bring our dog.
WE TOOK OUT OF TOWN RELATIVES THERE AND WALKED AROUND PEARL STREET MALL AFTER LOOKING AT THE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS. IT WAS NICE TO BE ABLE TO MAKE SAME DAY RESERVATIONS FOR A PARTY OF SEVEN. IT WAS FAIRLY BUSY BUT STILL QUIET ENOUGH THAT WE COULD HEAR THE WHOLE TABLE
We love Rio Grande and go there often. Great margaritas, I like the coin, my husband likes the Mango ones. Guac is great. We typically find it to be solid, tasty food, with good value, however on this Friday night, Dec 16, the food was not up to par and the service was off. The fajitas were only ok, shrimp was tough, veggies didn't have the great grilled taste, even the corn tortillas which I usually really enjoy were off. We tried the smoked chicken flautas, found them overcooked, dry and not special. Server was excellent until the end, when she brought us the check and never checked back. Turns out the pen didn't work and she didn't circle back to check on us again, after 15-20 minutes we flagged down another server to get a pen to sign the check so we could leave. Disappointing.
The Rio Boulder is a consistent restaurant and our dining experience on 11/29 was very nice. Chips were served warm, the salsa is tolerably spicy with a nice smoky flavor. Margaritas are some of the best in town. All entrees were very good, food was served hot. The service was friendly and efficient. Will be back soon.
Poor service...mediocre food...very disappointing. Don't visit!
Hostess area smelled like sour rags and water used to clean the table. Upon being seated the table had a strong oder as if they hadn't changed their cleaning rag water in a while. We got up and walked out.
I wrote on my reservation that it was my Aunt's birthday and the waitress delivered sopapillas at the end for her. Was a really sweet gesture.
Waiter was attentive and personable. We all had different entrees which were good. We were attending a show at the University and our waiter was good to get us out in time.
Chips and salsa were tasty and delivered promptly. Margarita appeared to be a sweetened mix vs home made. Food was average. Biggest issue was the smell! Dirty dishes/dirty rag odor permeated the table. A real buzz kill for the seemingly festive ambiance!!
Great place to enjoy good tex-mex and mares with friends.
Always nice for dining. Nice dining for the entire family including the kids.
Somewhat indifferent Mexican fare. The noise level at the Rio Grande on Monday night was
intrusive. The location is convenient and the building itself is quite nice, with unusual architectural details.
We wanted an out of town guest to sample different restaurant offerings in Boulder. She is on
a bland diet and this menu fit the bill. The food was OK - no more, no less. I prefer more deft combinations of flavor and spice and will not be in a hurry to return.
Well-known place in Boulder that is fun and good for all ages. Not a huge menu which is great if you don't want to be overwhelmed by too many choices.
We dine here regularly and we are always very pleased. However, this time the food was not up to their standard quality and the service was just okay. I asked for the Guacamole Tostado with 3 grilled shrimp and what I received was 3 pieces of chicken which I returned to the kitchen. When my dish was returned it had 3 small pieces of cut up shrimp rather than 3 whole shrimp. Overall, we were very disappointed ... not sure what is going on with this normally consistent restaurant.
Ok lunch but service was rather poor. Maybe it was an off day. But still worth a try
Rio margaritas are excellent, the draft NegroModelo is also good. Chips and salsa were very good. We had a varied set of dishes from Steak Enchilada to Crab & Shrimp Enchilada, and all were very tasty.
I've been here a couple times at least. Food is always really good. Great margaritas. Service fast, efficient, friendly. It's my go-to Mexican place in Boulder.
Love love this place! Amazing food. Great GLUTEN FREE OPTIONS! Amazing margaritas.
A great, welcoming place for a family gathering.
Katie p was outstanding. Could not have had better service.
Great margaritas, definitely worth the trip there alone!
Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant was a great place to eat before attending the Colorado Shakespeare Festival. It was a short walk from campus and the evening ambiance was lovely.
Great service! Even the manager (Crystal) stopped to see if we were happy or if we needed anything. We'll be back!
We arrived 5 minutes late for our reservation time. The hostess explained that she would check on our table. When she returned she spoke with other servers for about 5 minutes before I had to ask what the status was. Before I did, I overheard that there were 2 tables that were supposed to be available for my reservation time, but that the other reservation had been seated and the other table was nowhere close to being done with the table. I was offered a table in the back of the bar, which I refused. Had I wanted to sit in the back of the bar I wouldn't have bothered with a reservation.
I asked to be seated in the dining room and was told it would be 10-15 minutes before we were seated. As a part of 5, I understand that tables that could accommodate our sized party were limited. Multiple parties of 4 were seated in front of us and we were not asked if we could squeeze into a four top. I asked if we could, but by the time I did we were waiting 30 minutes since our arrival, standing in a crowded entry area being constantly bumped into by other guests being seated and servers delivering food from the kitchen.
I was disappointed in the lack of communication during the wait and the hostess not thinking to offer any alternatives, but the back of the bar, which she offered twice. After we were finally seated, the server was friendly and competent. The front of the house is either being pushed to squeeze every last dime out of the dining room at dinner and not actually managing the reservations so that clients using Open Table who make reservations can get seated when they arrive. I was not contacted by the restaurant management, nor offered any kind of apology for my party's wait. I eat out a lot and use Open Table for every reservation I possibly can. I will avoid the Rio in Boulder. They need to get the front of the house in order.
Rio is always great food with excellent service - and a fun, hip place to be!
We had a great experience at the Rio in Boulder. Great service, excellent margaritas!
The service is great, the food was alright, I think I just prefer my Mexican food a little spicier
The waitstaff is inattentive at best.
Great management and staff. Dependable, friendly service. Comfortable for families with kids, big partying groups, or just a couple of friends. Food is always good, drinks always great. Crab & shrimp enchiladas with a side of tomatillo sauce and a side of green chili is my comfort food.
Their flavors (spices,.marinates) are the best!
We ave enjoyed this place in its 3 locations for many years. It has the best margaritas anywhere. Thanks for you consistency and friendly service for all these years. This is a fixture when our now grown children visit with their families from far away😀
Th Rio in Boulder is a fantastic Mexican restaurant to grab a margarita and a nice Mexican dish.
The RIO GRANDE restaurant is a historical restaurant since it is across the street from my husbands office and so we have been customers for at least 17 years. The service was truly outstanding and the atmosphere fun and energetic. Their guacs and margs are the best in Boulder. The roof top (when available) is quite special once you climb the three flights of stairs.
We had a marvelous time and server Kelly was a true gem.
Love this restaurant for its rooftop mountain view! Overall, food was good. Salads could use some help, less lettuce, more substance, maybe add seasoned beef or beans.
More of a happy hour place, not for a meal. Rooftop is nice ambiance.
Love this place and the signature anniversary margaritas are so amazing!
Squeezing a party of 10 (2 kids) on 3 tiny square tables does not make for a comfortable dining experience. Smaller parties had much bigger tables. Waiter had to take our orders multiple times because she was trying to remember our orders in her head and then realized she couldn't. Food and margaritas were great.
Mostly I can't say enough about our server who was descriptive, responsive, and witty. Food was so so. Chips, Salsa, and Margs made the day. Just wish those margs weren't so pricey for the size. Celebrating my daughters graduation the venue was perfect for the group and offering a relaxing bright environment where the grads could feel free to walk around and chat with other table celebrating as well.
Service OK, Food OK. Sat in Southwest Corner (with grandparents over 70 years old) in direct sunlight. Very uncomfortable. Surrounded by large open tables. Requested to be relocated. Ignored.
Super noisy but great margs!
