Great Margaritas & queso, as always. The food is decent- not the best Mexican food, but still more than good enough for a group gathering. So glad they have kept the tradition of free chips & salsa when so many places have started charging.
Great Margs. Always fun and lively. Love the fact that we can use "open table". We go often.
Hosted business colleagues from out of state, the service was great, food was amazing and the rooftop views left a lasting impression on my peers. Atmosphere was fun but still allowed us to conduct business conversations. Love the Rio!
We had to wait one hour to get our meal after ordering. 3 tables near is that were seated after us were served before us.
Took our grand kids there before a Shakespeare performance at Mary Ripon Theater. Food was very tasty--even for the kids.
The food was very bland. Everything had the same boring flavor
Food was much better than we had experienced prior to this visit...excellent service with a charming yet professional young woman. We had 2 friends from France who really enjoyed the Margaritas and the food. Recent visit to the Flagstaff House was not half as good!
We went for dinner on a Tuesday that wasn't too busy and were able to sit out on the rooftop with its spectacular view of downtown and the Flatirons. Service is a little slow, but friendly. Other patrons can get pretty noisy, exuberant, let's say. The food was good, not spectacular but there's probably something for everyone.
Excellent margaritas (house specialty); not too sweet. Great queso and chips. Zippy salsa. Try the spinach enchaladas. Service attentive, but not too pushy or hovering. Great time before a concert.
Chicken quesadilla hardly had any chicken, steak burrito was over salted, guacamole tostad shell was burnt. This is the 2ns time in 1 month we went back, figuring the last time we went was an off night. No, the food has gone downhill. We have been going to the RIO for 15 years. Their child and salsa & margs are great, but pass on the food.
Food was great - server seemed a little overwhelmed and got a few things wrong.
The steak nachos are my go-to item. They are dee-lish. They typically come out a little cool--I think they are made first and then are waiting on the other food items.
Service is hit or miss at Rio. Sometimes we get great service and sometimes it is 10 minutes before the waitstaff arrive
We always love the Rio and it's our go to restaurant for good quick service, good food and fun!
A good time was had by all on the birthday celebration. Our table was out in the 'garage' area which is a nice substitute for the rooftop (it was not quite warm enough that day) as it has an outdoor feel. The Rio's margs still live up to their reputation after all these years.
I've been coming to the Rio for 20 years - never disappointed!
everyone agreed it was delicious and we will come back
This was our second visit to the restaurant. We live out of state. The food is excellent. The only drawback to our dining experience was the noise. It was hard to have a conversation. But it was graduation & the restaurant was very busy. Next time we go there, we'll eat upstairs on the roof.
A little loud for easy conversation, but the food is great and A LOT if it! I ordered the chile rellanos plate, took half home and still couldn't finish it at lunch the next day. Yum!
Took an hour for our food to come after we ordered. Waitress said the kitchen was "backed up". When our food came, it was just "OK". My sons large order of fajitas was the same size as my daughters small order. I would not recommend this restaurant.
Great margs as usual. We haven't eaten there in a while and still found their marinated steak the best!!
We love nachos and margs at Rio. The food is delish and the drinks are not loaded down with sugar. Try the coin!
This is one of our favorite restaurants in Boulder for a Mexican food fix!
On a quieter warm evening, the rooftop patio of this place is pretty hard to beat. However, on this occasion we had to eat inside, and was underwhelmed. The tables were squished together so there was no room between me and the diner behind us. The backs of our chairs were touching despite us both being pulled in pretty tight to the table. We had a reservation, but would rather have been told there was no room than to be sardine'ed in like that.
It was a busy night (Sunday???) so service was a bit delayed, which is understandable, but when my $15 burrito (no sides, just a burrito) showed up at the table it was cold, as were my fellow diner's entrees). Given how busy our server was (and the fact we had a toddler with us) I knew that sending the meal back was not a viable option as it simply would have taken too long to get a replacement.
Conclusion: Don't eat here if you have a big appetite, if there's no room on the roof, or if it's busy.
Good food but service was slow :(
Awesome margaritas. Attentive service. Mediocre food.
The staff was fun and they took excellent care of us, in spite of the very busy time we were there. There can be a 90 min wait at times, so Open Table is highly recommended.
Took too long for server to come to table and no apology for the wait.
Wonderful service, great salsa and tacos! Margarita not so bad either.
Ashley , was excellent, very helpful with the gluten free dishes!
Kaily was an outstanding server! She made great suggestions and was very accommodating. The food was superb and the margaritas were amazing! Will definitely return next time we are in Boulder, Colorado!!'
Firstly, when we arrived, the three girls behind the host stand could not have looked less interested.
We ordered our margs. As the server checked our IDs, she asked where we were from/visiting from. We told her Atlanta and LA. She asked why my friend's ID was from PA if she said she was from Atlanta. My friend explained she used to live there to which the server responded by asking her address in PA. My friend did not remember her exact address.
The server proceeded to tell us that management would have to look at the ID. About 5-6 min laters, she came back to greet two other tables around us and didn't bother to acknowledge us with an update. As we continued to wait, we could see the entire staff in the kitchen passing around the ID.
The 3 of us decided it would be best to eat elsewhere give that even if she did accept the ID, the experience would be uncomfortable. I informed our server that we would be leaving and asked for the ID back. She proceeded to tell me that her manager would not allow her give it back and is it did not match their book.
Here are my issues with the experience thus far:
- You cannot confiscate someone's legal document because you THINK it's fake
- If your book is out of date (which theirs clearly is), you need to have a backup source, ie. a scanner
- Why isn't the manager showing his/her face?
As we were traveling the next day, I informed the server that leaving without the ID simply was not an option. Suddenly the story changed. She COULD in fact give it back, but would need two other cards with the same name to do so. My friend gave her another identification and a credit card. She took the three cards back to her manager (who we still haven't seen).
We are 25. We are college friends from three different states who met in CO for a birthday weekend. We left humiliated and feeling as if we did something wrong. We are legal to drink. We have official documentation.
I love the Rio's food and Margs. I wish they always played music from Mexico.
Great margs as usual. Table was awesome but service was spotty.
After sitting for nearly an hour with no food, our server came and told us they "lost" our ticket. They said they could put in our order again but we decided to leave and they didn't even comp our 2 drinks. Very disappointing.
Margaritas were great! Food was good. Service could have been better.
Our party of 5 had a good variety of dishes. The Chicken enchiladas were great! The nachos, both beef and chicken were ordered, and both had very little meat on them. The kid's bean burrito was difficult to eat as it just fell apart. Both the Chile Rellenos-Baked and the Pork Tacos were excellent! Will defineatly be back to try the Margaritas!
The Rio is the most consistently good restaurant in Boulder!
Been here numerous times. Food only so-so on this occasion. Usual entree of Steak Nachos was sub par. Service ok until male waiter called me, female, 'Bro', after telling me avocadoes were expensive after I commented about the tiny 1 tablespoon portion of guac with our queso. Avos are pretty cheap these days. Anyhow, probably won't go back unless the rooftop is open and at least the view can overcome the rest.
Good food as usual, margs even better! No complaints!
I am from Colorado and moved to Arizona several months ago. I came for a winter visit and only wanted to meet great friends at The Rio Boulder. A foot of snow was falling. A few friends couldn't make their way to Boulder. The Rio Grande even closed early. But they entertained us and kept or drinks flowing until we were ready to leave. They have great food, a great staff, and it will always be my favorite Colorado restaurant.
