Rio Azul Mexican Bar & Grill Ratings and Reviews
I've had it with Rio Azul. The food is good but the service is uneven. We frequently dine here on Friday nights but after three mediocre visits, we're not going back. At least on Friday nights.
On our most recent visit we arrived before our reservation time and informed them our group of six was now three. That usually frees-up a 2-top for another party. We still had to wait 15 minutes for our table. Once seated, we waited another 15 minutes for our waitress to appear. By then, we were ready to give her our complete order. 45 minutes later, we had been told our food was on its way, she told them to put a rush on it, they dropped it. I finally went to the hostess station but the manager was not there and the hostess was on the phone. Another waiter was there and when I told him the problem he said he'd look into it. A few minutes later he reported that our food would be out in five minutes. Of course, when it arrived, the side dishes were room temp and we had to ask for fresh side dishes. By the time they arrived, we were half-way through our entrees.
To the waitress' credit, she did apologize and comped our order of guacamole and drinks (two iced teas. Probably $15). Having experienced long delays on our previous two visits we have decided that we are not going back for a while and when we do, it won't be on a Friday night. It appears that the kitchen cannot keep-up with the crowd on Friday nights. On a slower night it might be ok.
Our first visit to Rio Azul, but we will definitely be back. I'm from San Antonio, TX so I generally am sort of a Mexican food snob, but I was impressed. The salsa was fresh, just right amount of heat not heavy handed with the cilantro and delicious, the chips hot crisp and lightly salted. The entrees were all fresh, hot and delicious as well. One of our party had a chicken fajita salad, with lovely grilled tomatoes atop the greens, one had a combo plate with corn tamale, chile relleno and a mini carnita burrito. I enjoyed the shrimp rellenos, which are delectable bacon wrapped shrimp stuffed with jalapeno and topped with ranchero sauce. All were delicious. Only one issue was the very bland flour tortillas served with my meal. I just skipped them for more of the great chips.
Our server Rocio was delightful and efficient. She was great. A pleasant surprise was the very talented harpist playing music during our meal. We will be back for sure.
Rio Azul is always our "go to" Mexican restaurant in Palm Springs. A unique non-Baja style menu which seem to be all around. Check it out. The bar is a great place for happy hour apps and drinks if you just want something quick or small. Otherwise, the main restaurant is great for a sit down meal.
We were pumped about the Drag Queen Brunch but upon arrival it was evident that it was just a tightly packed room with a blaring speaker and wildly underwhelming food. A majority of our group swore they were “Bridesmaided” after gastro troubles throughout the day. The performances were definitely entertaining, but bloodies should atleast have a celery stalk if nothing else. $16 for a quesadilla is essentially a crime. Actaully, a chicken quesadilla that tasted like pork was definitely a crime on my stomach.
Portions were huge and lots of different items on menu so good for a large crowd since there is something for everyone but best part was live harp player- seriously- we all loved it. Not what I would have thought for live music in Mexican restaurant but he was definite highlight of evening.
Rio Azul is our go-to venue for delicious, authentic Mexican cuisine when we visit Palm Springs. Fresh, lively flavors, generous portions, and outstanding margaritas, all served with huge smiles by a welcoming, efficient staff. Great ambience that keeps us coming back.
We were greeted warmly by the hostess and seated immediately. Our waitress Raylee was very welcoming and patient with us as it us a huge menu and we wanted to explore all our options. We choose a grill for two that was a great sampler of many of the items on the menu. It was delicious. I would absolutely recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants excellent Mexican food.
Just a terrible overall experience. It all started off with even when having an advanced reservation we were place at a two seat table to the back entrance to the kitchen. Seeing a lot of in and out traffic of that area, we asked to be moved. Where did they move us? We were reseated to a table at the front entrance of the kitchen with even more traffic. At that point I just said "whatever, let's eat. What happens next, the house margaritas are basically just all margarita mix. For a respected Mexican restaurant I would expect a true mix made at the time the drink is being made and not a pre made commercial mix. Next a chicken bone in the enchilada. A 1.5 inch sharp pointed bone. It was pointed out to our waiter, he took the bone back to the kitchen and we didn't see him again until we got the bill. Just ridiculous. No customer service at all. After all of that it's even hard to say how the food tasted with such a bad experience tainting the entire dinner.
Rio Azul is a predictably great place to go for any occasion. The food is good, and most of the portions are generous. The staff is one of the most friendly in Palm Springs, and they are always respectful and most accommodating. Highly recommended! Sit on the patio, if weather permits.
