Gastro Pub
Resto, French slang for casual restaurant, opened its doors in April 2007. The concept of a laid back neighborhood gathering place with approachable Belgian food in the style of New York, was created by the owner, Christian Pappanicholas. Resto has become a destination in Gramercy Park/Murray Hill for a delicious dinner, weekend brunch or a late night bite. The knowledgeable and friendly staff is well versed in the extensive Belgian beer list and the thoughtful wine list which focuses on a selection of French, Italian and Spanish wines. The menu is crafted using traditional French technique, with an emphasis on seasonal, mostly local, farm fresh ingredients. Resto prides itself on elements like a revolving seasonal menu as well as large format plates such as Cote De Boeuf, Whole Roasted Pig or Lamb. Resto's dining room can accommodate 75 guests with 12 seats at the bar where we encourage full dining. We also have our baby brother "The Cannibal" next door; a retail beer & butcher shop.

This restaurant has a wide selection of European beers which comment a varied continental menu. The deviled eggs never disappoint as a starter. My strip steak was nicely cooked. The decor is simple but tasteful and the service is helpful.

Our server and the other staff were very nice and helpful. The appetizers (crispy meatballs & deviled eggs) were decent. The problems: They weren't serving the chicken or the burger - i.e., a big chunk of their tiny menu - and were offering two specials instead, one of which cost $110 (i.e., roughly five times the price of the chicken or the burger). Given the narrow options, two of us ordered the moules & frites, which were served in what seemed to be a bit of the water they were boiled in, with no butter or any other flavor. About one in three mussels had not been cleaned and was far too sandy to chew. Perhaps these types of problems explain why the restaurant was so awkwardly empty. It's a fairly large place, and we were one of only three parties there when we arrived.

The food and appetizers at Resto are top notch. They have a really outstanding beer list also. However, it seemed like every beer we selected they didn't have. It's rather distressing when you're presented with a fantastic beer list only to find out you can't get a lot of the beers you want. Other than that, would definitely return.

Went late at night on a Friday. I think we arrived when servers were being reduced. Restaurant was only moderately full. Menu reads great and food was great. The spotty service and slow attention didn't help the evening. That said I'd go back and still recommend just put a bruise on an otherwise nice night.

Surprisingly good--great knowledgable service (Jeremiah our waiter was outstanding), excellent, flavorful food (octopus, calamari appetizers, steak for 3, fries), good whiskey to start (like the big single ice cube), Belgian draft beer and wine. Just a great meal for my 2 sons & me.

Resto does an amazing job of creating delicious, unique dishes that do not feel forced or overly thought-out. They do all their butchering in-house (which I only recently learned) so take advantage of their carnivorous offerings!

We returned to Resto after the recent two star review in the NYTimes. Is it a two star experience? Not really. The service is friendly despite the close quarters and noise. But the food was hit and miss. The "double" burger consisted of two horrendously overcooked patties. I asked for medium rare, and the waiter said they do them medium. Fair enough. But these were beyond well done. Salads were good. The caramel creme brule for dessert: disappointingly over-sweet. This place gets an enthusiastic twenty-something crowd, and they seemed content.

I'd eaten a while ago at Resto and found it okay, but not a restaurant I'd return to. With its new chef it seems to have improved. I mainly had small plates and starters. The brandade was excellent - especially the grilled oiled bread served with it. Steak tartare was an unusual version, with some textures and flavors not usually encountered. I confess I prefer the classic version, but this one was also good. The chicken liver pate on toast was scrumptious, as was the charred octopus tentacle. The least interesting dish was a side dish of beets. There was nothing wrong with it, but it didn't have a lot of flavor. People at an adjoining table loved their scallops and duck. The caramel rum creme brulee was very good. Service was efficient and helpful, though I have never heard the word 'guys' used so often in an evening. Seating is cramped, but it's a bistro.

I have been going to Resto since they opened with my husband, family, friends for lunch and dinner. I don't have burgers often but their burger is the BEST burger in the city. And you must get the assorted dipping sauces with their magnificent fries. You will have difficulty selecting your favorite. They have a fantastic beer selection but if you're not in the mood for beer, they have a very nice wine selection as well. Everything is tasty here but outside of the star burger, the kale salad is very delicious. I would also recommend them for brunch. The egg dishes are great. I have not yet had a disappointing meal here. I will always go back.

Our server was nice, but he couldn't do anything about the reverberating noise that literally made it hard to hear a couple of guys talking across a small table, even when leaning in. Larger groups, drinking a lot, booming loud voices, it's that kind of place. The food, which I was looking forward to from Bruni's old review, turned out to be tired and disappointing. The vaunted burger was kind of dry and overall gray, more grease than flavor. The starter salad was nice, but the price tag was way out of line for quality, service, ambience. If you have wealthy vikings in town and want to impress them with a faux-bistro vibe, go for it.

Resto can be counted on for serving "comfort food" after a busy day at work. The extensive list of European beers is a good place to start. I am partial to the "small plates" - particularly the Deviled Eggs and the Broiled Octopus. The menu is limited but still offers sufficient variety. The service is friendly and helpful.

Although we were a bit older than most of the diners here, we had a very pleasant weekend meal and were glad we tried Resto. They have a "boozy brunch" drinks specials that we did not take advantage of, but the pomegranate Bellini I did have was delicious. Menu for brunch is not large but we all found things we liked. Desserts also were quite nice. Wait staff could not have been more pleasant or more helpful, overall a very enjoyable meal.

The grilled octopus starter and the duck were very good. Service was courteous, but a bit slow on the drink orders and got stranger. After clearing our starters, one server asked if we'd like to see the dessert menu. We said we'd rather see our entrees first. Then, after clearing the entrees, a different server came to tell us that our creme brulee would be another few minutes. We told her we didn't order creme brulee and she hovered a bit with dessert menus in her hand without saying anything. A few minutes later, the first server arrived with a creme brulee saying sorry about his mistake earlier and he ordered us something sweet on the house "because something sweet makes everything better!" We were never shown a dessert menu, but we're not really dessert people. At least they forgot to charge me for a $14 glass of wine that was a kind of short pour.

The restaurant itself is very nice and the staff sat us on time. However, it was very loud in there and they had music playing at very loud levels on top of that. I literally could not hear my wife from across the table. Our food was ok but nothing to write home about. The draft lines were down so I could not order the beer I wanted and they ran out of the dessert we tried to order. Our server was very nice but she had numerous tables so our orders were a little slow in getting to us. Overall, it wasn't a horrible experience but I would no go back or recommend to others.

As a Brooklynite, conceding to brunch in Manhattan for my out of town friends should have been a tragedy. Resto was not. I loved the bellinis and my food was delicious. The staff was incredibly accommodating and allowed us to linger because the 80's music took us all back to our childhoods. So much so that we demanded the playlist and waited for the manager to enlighten us. I would go back with or without the out of town friends' excuse. My hangover pasta was the perfect excuse to eat carbs!
