The Omakase experience at the sushi bar upstairs was amazing! The pieces were delicious,exotic and melted in our mouths. We loved being served one piece at a time and how the Sushi Chef explained what each serving was and where the fish/shrimp/scallops came from. We enjoyed savoring the flavors and ate each piece with our eyes closed. It was romantic and cozy since it was a small sushi bar that was shared with just three other couples. We loved that it was a relaxing and tranquil atmosphere as we didnt sit in the busy main dining room. It was my first time enjoying Omakase at the sushi bar. In the past we only dined downstairs and had the Omakase served four pieces at a time. We loved tasting each one at a time and will definitely be back very soon to repeat this same amazing experience!

Visited the Tribeca location which has a dining room on the first floor and both a dining room and sushi counter on the second floor. We visited the counter which was run by three well-experienced sushi experts from Japan. We went for the omakase (chefs tasting menu) and it was superb. The quality of the fish was excellent, as was the presentation. We ordered beyond the tasting menu as well, for instance they had three types of sea urchin (uni), two from Japan and one from the US... what a tasting experience. Our server, from Japan, was very knowledgable and asked the chefs for any clarifications in Japanese... always a very good sign. The sake menu was exceptional as well. We went all-in, so not a cheap experience - but worth every penny for us.

Sushi of Gari Tribeca upstairs, under the artistic direction of head chef Atsutaka Chikaraishi is not just dining, it's a delightful and delicious esthetic experience. Watching him slice fresh fish, flown in that day from Japan, puts you on notice that you are in the hands of a master. Then there's the sushi! Each one is created with an unfailing gift for taste, texture, color and presentation. A whisper of truffle oil, a few sprinkles of caviar, a tiny quail's egg - all accessorize and enhance the offerings. All were extraordinary; our personal favorites were the grilled oyster, uni (sea urchin roe,) fluke and yellowtail. Adding to the pleasure was the deft service by Danitza, who has a remarkable ability to remember previous diners and the way they like things.

The hand cut avocado roll was left out too long before being served and the seaweed was soggy. The quail egg on a sushi was broken. The salmon and tomato sushi was not hot. The tuna yukkhe sushi was oversauced. Normally I experience better food construction here. What was perfect was the Maitake Tempura. It was absolutely perfect.

Had the opportunity to visit the Gari in Tribeca and it was generally disappointing. The space we were seated was small and the wait staffs stood a short distance away all the time making it a bit uncomfortable. We opted for the omakase and was generally disappointed at the taste and presentation. The pieces were brought out on large plates and with little explanation. For the price, it was not a good experience or value. Better omakase experience in many other restaurants. Would not return.

Head sushi chef Chikaraishi created the most delicious and esthetically beautiful omakase sushi I have ever had. The combination of fresh ingredients and special fish from Japan contributed to a taste triumph, from beginning to end. The waitress, Danisha, was most helpful in describing the ingredients and keeping my place setting pristine. I'll be back to enjoy it again in the elegant setting and tranquil ambiance.

Excellent quality, service and atmosphere. I dined alone while traveling and the staff was most welcoming. I highly recommend choosing one of the three options for having the chef create sushi and sashimi for you. It was a great experience and something I’ll always remember as they suggest guests try all the pairings with no soy sauce. The quality of fish and small pairings of garnish and sauces is so impeccable that you are able to appreciate the art of the chef’s creations!

This restaurant is an odd mix of neighborhood family-friendly and expense account expensive. We go as a family for omakase and it almost always ends up at least $200 per person. There were two tables with very young children, which gave the dining room a kind of casual atmosphere, which was unusual because the ambiance is usually quite formal. Food was exceptional and innovative, service was attentive but never intrusive. Highly recommend.
