Cafe Portofino - Marriott Kauai Ratings and Reviews
We booked in the morning and were able to get a reservation for 6:30pm that evening. We were very pleased with the location, the service, and the quality of the food. Unlike a popular restaurant nearby, you could have a conversation with your dinner partner without shouting. The ocean view is a nice perk. The menu is varied and there is something for everyone. We found the prices to be on the high side (we are Canadian so everything is 30% more with the exchange rate), but the quality of the food is great and I would definitely go back!
Very poor experience. We had reserved an outside table, but were seated inside (no tables available outside). Ordered scallops for starters. They totally lacked seasoning and were full of sand. Caesar salad was so-so. Main course was pasta with sausage. Pasta was cooked well, but flavors again very bland and the sausage slices still had the casing, so a mess to eat. The chef said it was impossible to remove casings and still call it sausage. I disagree. He then offered a replacement dish, but appetite was gone by then (good effort though). The other main dish was scampi flambé - also a very bland experience with a flawed presentation (reddish sauce with carrots!). Overall the worst dining experience in several years. Will not be back or recommend
We used to love coming here but the last few times have been disappointing. I ordered the linguini carbonara and it was truly disgusting. Two other people in my group didn’t believe me and insisted on trying it... one spit it into their napkin. It was that awful. My mom ordered fish which was also bad. I’m not sure what’s happening in their kitchen but I sure wish they would update the menu and focus on preparing excellent food.
Everything can be perfect but if the food is not right it’s not a good experience, my husband’s steak was 3/4 fat and what little steak there was was not good. when we told them about it our waitress said she would tell them in the back then she came back put the bill on the table and said thank you. It’s too bad because the restaurant itself is awesome with the views overlooking the ocean. But unfortunately we would never go back. After this experience we looked at the reviews and we were only one of many with this experience.
This has a beautiful setting with wonderful service, however the food is marginal. We had not been here for a while and we were looking forward to a lovely evening out with good food. We would return here often if the food improved however will probably not return as we want tasty meals and not just a pretty setting.
The location of Cafe Protofino is excellent, with great views of the beach and water. The food, however, was disappointing. I had the lamb, which the server told us was a signature dish, and it was mediocre. The seasoning was so-so, and some of the chops were overcooked. The asparagus was downright mushy. My wife had the ono, which was very good, but her asparagus was also overcooked.
The server was not knowledgeable at all about the menu, and had to look at every request and have it pointed out to her on the menu. She also was unable to give a wine recommendation with any confidence.
This restaurant is located adjacent to the Marriott Kauaii Resort, and can be reached without going outside (covered walkway). The food is excellent, and the ambiance warm. If you done before sunset, there is a nice view of the adjacent beach and ocean. I highly recommend this place.
Found the cuisine to be excellent. Good portions. Not too big, but big enough. Spaghetti and meatballs are excellent. My wife had the seafood and linguini. Although very good, she found the portion size too much for her.
Wine was excellent California vintage. Be aware that you can’t take your wine home with you. That came as a bit of a surprise, but is the law in Hawaii.
Service was friendly, fast and efficient. They were busy, but the service didn’t suffer for it.
The plastic sheeting across the front, that one guest has complained about, was welcome this night. Kept out the rain and the wind.
All in all, we had an excellent experience and would recommend Cafe Portofino without hesitation.
But, do make a reservation!
Our second visit to Kauai (stayed next door at Marriott both time) and we decided to finally eat here. I’m not sure we avoided it last time, and we were hesitant to go because of a few poor reviews but booked it anyway. Excellent experience. Comfortable seating with sufficient room around your table so it didn’t feel you were sharing dinner with anyone else. Seated quickly, service was excellent. Dinner was delicious. Our only disappointment was not going during our first trip and not having enough time in our second trip to go again. Good choice at a reasonable price.
So disappointing. I had wanted to try this restaurant for some time. The disappointment began upon arrival. I told the proprietor we had a reservation. Without looking at a book or checking for special requests, he sat us - no mention of -or apology for - window seating being unavailable. It was a nonchalant attitude - not welcoming - rather, off putting.
The server was kind.
Our first course was the best. My husband ordered the special soup. A seafood bisque- rich and delicious. I ordered a beet salad. Though more greens than beets, it was a nice fresh start to the meal.
My husband ordered the seafood pasta special which was full of mussels, fish & other seafood with a kick. He enjoyed it - though the price was a surprise. (It was well more than anything on the regular menu.)
I ordered a house specialty- shrimp “flambé”. The meal was not large or of quality to be a gourmet plate - it included 7 shrimp (best flavor was from capers), over cooked veggie (2 carrots, 2 broccolini) & 3 wedges of potatoes (inedible herb seasoning). Sadly, not a meal I would recommend or ever wish to eat again.
Will not return.
A beautiful old plantation house is the setting for this restaurant. We always try to dine here at least once on every visit to Kauai. The tables are around the courtyard. Our server, Craig, was wonderful. Water glasses were kept filled which was important after a day on the golf course. Shorts were the dress of the evening for men. Food was very delicious. I chose the short ribs and my husband had the seared ahi. We were very pleased with both choices. The wine list tends to be pricey but we found a moderate merlo that was nice. The best thing is we were able to talk and enjoy a peaceful setting with great service and delicious food at a reasonable price.
Portofino's was a disappointment...it was just average.....with the view of the ocean, and a captive Marriott clientele, maybe they feel their meals don't have to be anything but average.
The ONE exception was the Calamari appetizer...it was big and tasted above average.
The Cannelloni with chicken tasted fine, but never tasted one bite of chicken...disappointing.
The Penne with sausage had spicy sausage had a fair amount of it and was good...the Penne was unspectacular.
The only benefit to going there was a 25% second entrée discount given by the Marriott.
