What Insiders Are Saying
The incredible People Watching available at Balthazar makes scrunching into a tiny table and overpaying for brunch totally worth it. Say whatever you want about this place, you can’t take away the fact that the kitchen gets it done.
Everything was great but for our snarky waiter. We were a group of college friends celebrating our 50th birthdays together after not seeing each other in years and waiter kept making snide comments about the length of time he anticipated we would be there. Despite ordering plenty of drinks, appetizers, entrees and dessert, he couldn't get rid of us fast enough. The food and drinks were great though!!!
Just my go-to favorite in NYC! Hasn’t changed a bit over the years and that’s a GOOD thing. Our table was ready on time and they treated me and my 8-year-old birthday girl like queens. Steak was PERFECTION. Onion soup the real deal. Only bummer was that they had run out of chocolate croissants.
I eat at Balthazar for brunch every time I come into the city. It’s a great place to people watch and really an old stand-by. The food is consistently fantastic and always a good time is had. Service is top notch as well. Really a must for any tourist. Even the locals eat here so that should, after all these years, be a good indicator.
The food was excellent and the service was very good as well. A little bit noisy and maybe the tables to close. But very good oveall.
Consistently one of my favorite NY destinations.
To noizy and too crowded. Food ok good pr but over crowding
Excellent as always. Doos, wry good and service efficient and friendly.
Only downside is it is a bit frantic at the door/check in and the kitchen wastes no time getting the food out. If you want a relaxing, leisurely lunch you might be disappointed. Having said that, it will not deter me from going back.
Always a great girls day lunch!! Beast Steak Tartar in the World!!
No visit to Manhattan is complete without a visit to Balthazar's. A SoHo fixture that consistently provides the best NY soho ambience and excellent (but pricey) dining.
Still one of the best in NY
Ambience and service great
A great Paris experience in New York .
I would go back twice a week, but Balthazar should try to find somewhere to muffle the sound levels.
Balthazar was on my bucket list forever, and now I wish it had stayed on the bucket list. My wife and I went in with great anticipation, fully aware of its reputation for being crowded, noisy, and NY-priced, but really excited. We had read a lot about the special ambiance, and especially the food quality.
The disappointment started with the seating. No amount of review-reading had prepared us for the wedged-in table with elbows touching our neighbors and backs bumping into other diners. We felt badly for another couple we saw; the restaurant had actually put a table for two into the tiny floor space between the bar and the stairs to the bathrooms. They were obviously miserable, but they were probably also out-of-towners who had a dream of a special NY night, and not NY-ey enough to complain.
On to the food: the complementary bread basket had 2 excellent, fresh breads, but (why?) also one slice of a wheat bread that felt stale. The accompanying butter was also very good, but it had a dark curly hair laid across the top. I had a minute to make a decision before my wife returned from the bathroom: should I make a stink about the butter hair, or just scrape it off and forget it? Since I was already in a defensive position about choosing this restaurant, I chose scrape-and-forget rather than have the hair discussion when she returned.
The rest of the food was good, but certainly not great. Even the much-praised frites were just OK. If you have the budget for Balthazar and are looking for a special New York dinner, try for a reservation at Gramercy Tavern (or any of the Danny Meyer restaurants). Skip the Balthazar meal, but stop by the Balthazar Bakery next door and get some excellent pastries. And hit the MOMA store across the street; it's amazing.
Escargot is the best I’ve had in the city but nothing else on the menu really stands out
I always kick off a trip to NYC with lunch at Balthazar. delicious, great energy, outstanding staff, beautiful restaurant. never disappoints.
Excellent but a bit too noisy ! Hard to have a good conversation between four people !!
Food was excellent as usual.
One of my Soho favorites!
Great spot for catching up with my girlfriend on a weekday.
Amazing dinner in one of the best bistró in New York.
Balthazars is a family favourite each time we visit NY. The food, atmosphere and the relaxed nature of the experience is consistently great over the years.
The ambience is beautiful and feels very French. Service is efficient but it seemed that they train their staff to never smile or behave in a warm or welcoming manner. Food is well executed and delicious. I recommend it for the experience more than anything.
Sadly this great standard has become a tourist trap. Expect to wait in line, just to tell the hostess you are thereand thenbe told “it will just be a minute”......never to be seen again. We squeezed in at the bar, to no avail. A great italian place on Thompson was a life saver.
This is a really buzzy restaurant. Absolutely loved the atmosphere! Was a wonderful last meal in NYC. And the French martinis were great!
Great Food great ambiance
Best breakfast ever
Recently got back to London from a week in NYC for my 50th birthday. Bookmarked Balthazar on a previous trip 10 years ago, but only just now got round to eating here. All I can say is... fabulous. It was busy, vibrant on a Monday night (worth waiting for too, because it was fully booked the entire weekend!). I mentioned to the young lady on the door that it was my 50th and we'd like a booth, if poss... She came up trumps, lovely table, lovely staff, GREAT food, great wine. Love the atmosphere too. Would DEFINITELY go back again! x
The restaurant was buzzing, the lighting and decor made you feel like you were in Paris. However it did feel like there were a lot of tourists and the tables are pretty close together. The staff were rushed off their feet, I appreciate it was very busy, they were very friendly when they eventually got to us. Enjoyed the soup, seafood ceviche, whole chicken and a bottle of red. All the food was pretty tasty with the high prices to be expected. Nice visit overall, would recommend however prepare yourself for the bill!
I like the food and the atmosphere of the restaurant a lot!
Great atmodphere and service, a bit pricey, worth the visit.
Nice service but very noisy and crowded. Food was delicious but hardly enjoyed because of the noise.
I’ve been coming to Balthazar for over 15 years. Each time is a fun lively experience. Food is excellent. Despite the always crowded atmosphere service is also excellent.; very attentive and friendly.
I am often late due to traffic and if you call ahead and tell them they are more than happy to hold your reservation . I just love how courteous everyone is!
Our traditional Sunday NY breakfast spot for well over a decade. You cannot go wrong but do reserve.
As always Balthazar continues to impress - the moules frites were amazing - succulent and plentiful-
The onion soup is a must have too - all fresh seafood tower is a splurge but delicious-
All main courses are well prepared- love the fish - my husband always has the steak frites - cooked to perfection
Varied wine list with a few reasonable choices - the burgundies are our favorite
Leave room for dessert - the apple tarte Tatin amazing!!!!!!!
Oh and the BREAD !!!!!!
The oysters were delicious. The Balthazar salad is one of the best I ever had. My husband had the daily special beef short ribs. They were to die for. I order the chicken paillard. It was disappointing. Service, wine and dessert were great!
If you like a table churn, pushy tourists, and no ambience- this place is for you. Perhaps years ago it was a fun local spot but those days are no more. Line up to be seated being pushed and bumped like we’re all cattle, a woman at the table next to us took a video of the bread basket, and lights on at full blast made this place feel like it belongs in Times Square. Food was fine - but not worth the overall lack of experience. If you live in NYC you’ll probably hate it.
