For over eighty-five years, New York's defining cultural moments have taken place at Russian Tea Room. Ever since members of the Russian Imperial Ballet founded the restaurant in 1927, it has been a second home for boldface names and the intellectual elite-an exclusive enclave where actors, writers, politicians, and businessmen planned their next deals and feted their friends' latest Carnegie Hall performances.

Daughters-18th birthday- was just eh. I ordered the beef stroganoff, daughter ordered the scallops. It looked good but there really wasn’t a lot of flavor for either dish. I felt like it just missed the mark all the way around. Ordered the crème brûlée& chocolate mousse cake for dessert - they brought crème brûlée & tiramisu - waiter was upset because he wasn’t told they were out of chocolate mousse cake before they brought it to the table (not his fault) ordered the lava cake instead - it was terrible ! The creme brûlée was good but felt a bit watery - $200 meal with no alcoholic beverages or appetizers - I expected it to be delicious - it was not.

Downhill since the last time I been here. This place has poor food quality while also price gauging you at every corner. Will not come here again.

It was worth experiencing, once. Go AS a special occasion. Going FOR a special occasion may disappoint. The setting is stunning. Most of the tea sandwiches were very good, although most didn’t exactly slay with flavor or freshness. The champagne was excellent although pricey. The tea was too weak/took too long to steep to a level of strength that stood up to the addition of milk. One bag (and it’s hard to imagine top quality tea — at top shelf prices — coming in a bag) in a decent sized pot is just not enough. The scones were a little dense, but good (but I was surprised they were served only with butter, not cream as in British tea service). The cupcakes were dry, almost stale and returned to the tray after one bite. Surprising for a peak day like a Saturday. The petits fours were excellent. Service was inconsistent — alternately attentive and clueless.

We have lived in the neighborhood for a bit but never tried the RTR. We decided we would try it out for Restaurant week. I had a lot of fun taking in all the decor. The Hostess was super kind and inviting. Borscht was really yummy. Beef Stroganoff - beef was delicious and tender (we wish we got more), noodles needed a bit more salt, and the portion seemed a bit small (this is not a shock given it was a Restaurant week Pre-Fix). They ran out of the Chocolate mousse cake but let us upgrade to the Tiramisu at no charge (I was thrilled). Server was kind, understandably didn’t want to spend too much time trying to upsell us, which we appreciated. I would definitely consider going back on a very special occasion for a more sophisticated meal.

Fabulous place for a parent to create a lasting and meaningful memory with a son or daughter or a grand young child. Oh, and the food and service are unique and excellent as well! And don’t fixate on the cost per item…the value is unparalleled and you’ve likely spent a lot more money for things that collect dust, rust and were a bust. This is a REAL place to have a great meal, a lovely conversation and a lot of fun.

It's a beautiful space and the service is especially good. The food, while good, was not excellent. This may be as much a fact of the cuisine itself as of the quality of work done in the kitchen, but all the dishes we had were relatively bland and heavy. Still, we had a pleasant experience overall.

I’ve always wanted to visit the Russian Tea Room, but sadly almost every aspect of our experience was disappointing. We were there for Afternoon Tea and the sandwiches were surprisingly basic and the bread was stale….almost as if they had been sitting out all day. The second course was equally as bad, like prepackaged desserts. The service started out good, but suffered immensely once they got busy. We were hoping for more drinks and no one came to even ask. Save yourself the frustration and go to the Plaza/Palm or Bluebird London.

The ambiance is great and what you would expect from the Russian Tea Room. The bathrooms, though, have not been renovated since the 1980s (?). The paper towels are generic from a deli. The soap dispensers don't work and they just put bottles of hand soap. The food. We went for high tea on a Sunday at 2:30pm. Everything was stale. They probably make everything fresh in the morning but it's not covered and has dried up throughout the day, that's how it felt like. The ingredients and flavors are bland and lack imagination. The service. There's a bunch of floor staff walking around, but dirty dishes remain on tables for a long time. There's no one that would stop by your table to pick up dirty dishes or wrappers of sugar unless you ask. The server was as good as what you get with no training. She also just plopped the bill holder on the table and walked away. The bare minimum attention. For such a highly rated establishment we would had expected something above a four star service instead of a mediocre service with subpar food. The $230 we paid would have better be spent in a classic New York diner that prides itself with it's service and quality food.

This is an iconic place and it lost its touch and class. The food is not good at all. Scones were over baked and tea sandwiches were dry and not scrumptious as it should be for high tea experience. I grew up going to high tea all the time and it’s sad to allow people to come in and not dressed up at all.

It is likely I went into this experience with high expectations. While the food and service was very good, I was hoping for a more intimate experience for afternoon tea. Instead, they had everyone packed into a very tight space, with little room to even move your chair back from the table. It was loud, crowded with a lot going on which totally took away from the experience. While I am glad we tried it…the decor, the space was very beautiful, I likely won’t go back.

You go for the atmosphere but maybe not the food. Had one of the BEST macaroons of my life, but the cupcakes were dry. My partner wasn’t impressed with the Chicken Kyiv or the borscht. The roasted red pepper tea sandwich was excellent but the rest of the tea sandwiches were average. The service was outstanding.

Overall, consistently great. I've enjoyed dinners here in the past, but this was my first time having their high tea service. The space is always impeccably appointed, tables are far enough apart, service is efficient but not brusk. The savory sandwiches were perfectly proportioned and quite delicious, as were the sweet courses of assorted pastries. Small downside, not enough of a tea selection, and the plain, heavy, clunky china. For me, the tea set/fine china is part of the enjoyment of high tea, it's delicate beauty and whimsy forcing the pinky pop. This set practically needed two hands and near impossible to hold the saucer under it as you brought it to your lips.
