For over eighty-five years, New York's defining cultural moments have taken place at Russian Tea Room. Ever since members of the Russian Imperial Ballet founded the restaurant in 1927, it has been a second home for boldface names and the intellectual elite-an exclusive enclave where actors, writers, politicians, and businessmen planned their next deals and feted their friends' latest Carnegie Hall performances.

I wanted to love this place and part of me did love the old school, somewhat tacky interior. But the food is subpar - from the almost stale bread to the doughy and dry dumplings, to the almost inedible salmon vareniki. For the price, it should be much much better.

Dining at this restaurant was a wonderful experience. The lunch menu had the perfect amount of choices. Each dish was delicious, from the appetizers to the desserts. The service was impeccable and the ambiance was so "old world"! This is a keeper!!

Birthday experience for my Daughter. She had always wanted to experience the iconic RTR. The room was beautiful. The food was very tasty. I expected that it would be pricy but I did not expect to be “nickeled and dimed”. First I was a bit offended that the waiter assumed that my adult daughter and I would share a Tea Service— I believe his comments were more about our skin color and gender. I don’t believe that the white gentlemen next to us with his date was asked that question. I tried to overlook that… at the end of the first course, my daughter asked if she could have two additional sandwiches— she does not like chocolate which was most of the 2nd course. He waiter did not suggest an alternative to her liking for the 2nd course nor did he agree to include the tea sandwiches that she requested. I was charged an additional $12 for the extra sandwiches. Given the earlier interaction regarding the “sharing”, I felt like he was thinking this Black woman can’t afford it. Also I didn’t want to cause a scene for my daughters birthday. This interaction left a bad taste in my mouth about RTR. This was not my first time at the RTR, but the previous time I was with a white middle-aged male and I feel that I was treated very different.

What can i say? The RTR is not faring well these days. Is it a victim of antipathy to Russia? The restaurant’s website proclaims solidarity with Ukraine, but the menu relies on Russian beer and spirits and classic Russian dishes, including chicken Kiev (note spelling). The restaurant was almost empty of a Saturday night, so the service was excellent. The food, on the other hand, seemed perfunctory: none of my party of three enjoyed his main, but all enjoyed the starter and dessert. Two of us ordered from the table d’hôte menu, while one of us ordered à la carte. None enjoyed his entrée. I have lovely memories of fabulous lunches and after theatre suppers at RTR, but this visit didn’t burnish them.

This place is a great experience. Decore is beautiful and the food is excellent! I do whish that the server would explain a little more about the the menue and have some recommendations. Beside that the restaurant was wonderful and great for first date's, anniversaries or any special occasion.

Beautiful setting. Excellent service. Sandwiches and desserts were tasty. Tea, however, was disappointing. I was dismayed to see that they used tea bags, and only one bag per pot. For $100.00 per person, at least use loose leaf tea!

Enjoyed every bite and sip of Afternoon Tea. Perfect meal before an afternoon Broadway show. Service was impeccable, food was delicious (don't be fooled by the first tray of food, the dessert tray will have you so full you'll need to be rolled out of there), and the ambiance was incredible. I would love to go back and experience a full-service dinner there in one of the upper dining rooms. The place drips with elegance and we loved every minute of it.

Restaurant is quite beautiful inside and was quite for 8 pm. We are in vacation and we’re excited for the history of the place. We have experience in Russian food and culture. Food quality was OK at most. Bursh was good but at 27 dollars…. We have been in different restaurants in Chicago, San Francisco and Tokyo and even there is not that expensive. It was amazing that a flight of vodka didn’t even have some pickles to enjoy it. Desert was international at most no typical Russian… creme brûlée? Tiramisu? No Napoleon… Anyway place is overrated and 350 dollars for 5 appetizers…

Beautiful restaurant. Good food. Great place to be with our small group of family and friends. It was a little sad to see this iconic restaurant so quiet. I'm sure it is a result of the Russian's fighting Ukraine now despite the restaurant website strongly stating being against the war.

Dead atmosphere, gaudy 1st floor decor, waiter was very nice and kind, however service was average. If you are between the ages of 75 and 100, this may be the place for you. The food was definitely good, but overall, a disappointing experience. I'm glad we went once, even not great experiences are memorable.

The tea was luke warm and they just kept pouring warm water over the tea bag instead of replacing the teabag which made it just brown water. For the cost they could’ve replaced the simple teabag at least once for a fresh pot of tea. The bread that the tea sandwiches came on was stale and the scones that they serve for dessert were hard as rocks and seem to be maybe from a day or two before. We felt very rushed out as they were doing a photo shoot in the back of the restaurant on the first floor. When we were leaving we asked if we could see the second floor where the glass bear aquarium was just to see it and we were told ( by the manager, a woman with longish blonde hair ) that it would not be possible and we should save up and rent it out so we could see it that way. Disgusting, I would’ve thought it would’ve been better considering what it is.

Went there for restaurant week 2022. Not sure if this was related to the treatment dispensed or not, but it wasn't a good experience. We ordered a bottle of wine. Turns out they didn't have the one we ordered, but instead of being informed of that and being offered possible replacements or the option to choose another one, the server just brought another one, and hid the label until after it was open/tried. The wine wasn't bad, but it wasn't what we asked for, and we felt cheated that this wasn't even mentioned, especially because the server deliberately hid the label, meaning it definitely wasn't an honest mistake (if offered the one he brought as a replacement, we would probably have taken it). We had the wine sent back, which was in itself uncomfortable, especially since there was no apologies whatsoever from the server (that still attended to our table for the remainder of the evening). Also, the dishes served on the prix fixe menu were different from the ones as shown in their website/instagram pictures, even though the description was exactly the same as the full a la carte menu. All in all, it wasn't awful, but I don't feel inclined to return or recommend, even considering we loved the ambiance.

It charged $60/pp for dinner plus tips and taxes!! The red borscht had no taste but overly sweet; the beef short rib tasted like the leftover from making soup, the thick noodle made long ago just tossed in some sauce. The dessert was no better than any store brought mini cake for $3-5. Oooh, the dinner roll was wet at the corner! Talk about the service?! The guy who poured us water, the water was not just on the glasses but onto the menu, not just drops but a trail of water but no one care to clean it up!!!! How dare they charged $80/pp for this wholly crap!

Came here for Restaurant Week lunch. The decor and ambience is very cool- extravagant and interesting. There is interesting art in the main dining room, and they have nesting dolls and Faberge egg replicas downstairs outside the bathrooms. Ask to see the bear aquarium and faberge egg tree on the 2nd floor. Service was great- servers were knowledgable and attentive. The young hostess at the front was great at anticipating needs- if she saw I was about to leave the table she would come and pull it out for me, and on return would lead me to the table to pull it out. The food unfortunately was not of the same high quality. Had the borscht and the salmon. I love borscht, this was thick and hearty, and was good but certainly not the best I’ve had. The salmon was rather flavorless and came with only 2 small drops of the tarragon cream sauce advertised. I had to request a side of the sauce to make the salmon palatable. I would not spend a lot of $$ here, the food is absolutely not worth the prices they charge. If I came back it would be for Restaurant Week or drinks/coffee/tea and dessert only. The history and the service are not enough to justify the prices. I expected to have a satisfying meal at a restaurant of this caliber and did not find that here.
