Contemporary Indian
Rahi, (meaning traveler in Hindi) is an artisanal Indian restaurant in Greenwich Village – a collaboration between a young Indian chef with playful artistry, Chintan Pandya, and restaurateur, Roni Mazumdar. Rahi serves vibrant Indian food, straying from tradition, by adopting the local produce of New York. Guests are taken on a journey through India – each dish with unique traditional flavors. White brick walls pulse with the energy of a black and gold mural, painted by famous artists, Yok & Sheryo. Pattern elements represent fragments of memories, a dream sequence, of a woman that travels around India. Rahi is designed for indulging the senses over leisurely conversation and enticing plates; for spirited evenings with exotic cocktails.

While the food was very good the portions are very small and very expensive. The decor is interesting and typical of a West Village restaurant. Tight uncomfortable seating and very uncomfortably warm. Often these small neighborhood restaurants are over priced without delivering the dining experience for the high cost.

The people in the front (hostess and other person) were extremely pleasant. Our waitress provided excellent service and was efficient, always with a smile. The food was delicious and ambiance pleasing. It was a great dining experience, one I look forward to repeating.

My experience in this restaurant was terrible. The food was not good, they gave a wine dated and close to my table the floor was floating of water coming from the ceiling.

I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant. The naan was stale. The goat curry was so salty that I couldn’t finish it. Definitely poor value... even at half the cost.

Our friends had been raving about Rahi so we were really excited to try their food yesterday evening. Unfortunately we were very underwhelmed and will not be returning.
Ambiance- sleek and trendy restaurant, fair lighting
Service - friendly, warm and welcoming, server was knowledgable about dishes and dish descriptions
Food-
Appetizers:
We ordered the dahi chili paneer, soft shell ink crab and tandoor chicken. The paneer was great. Very fresh and dressed in a chili sauce that was not too overpowering and complemented the dish well.

Mains: The main entrees were underwhelming.
Parda Prawn Hara Masala: When brought to the table it was exciting because the dish is baked and encased in an external naan that the server opens for you at the table to show the sizzling dish. Unfortunately the taste of the curry was not good. It was described as lemongrass based curry with prawn marinated in uni butter. I felt the curry was over seasoned but I could not taste the lemongrass. I could not taste the uni. There was no creamy texture to it. It was a very thin and tart liquid.

Wild Mushroom and Truffle Khichidi- Khichidi is one of my favorite dishes to make at home, so I was excited to see the words "truffle" and "khichidi" in the same sentence. The presentation included the khichidi being covered with papadum chips which I felt was random, did not understand the connection and that it took away from the dish. The khichidi itself was tasty but too rich. Loved the inclusion of mushrooms, but I felt this was more of a risotto.

Saag- Did not like this. I felt like the dish was boiled spinach that was then charcoaled or baked to give a smoky flavor. I could not taste the spices and there was no creamy base that typically goes into making a saag.
Drinks
Kaffir Lime Mango Lassi- my favorite thing I ordered. Not too sweet, loved the subtle tang from the kaffir lime.

For the price point of these dishes, I would not go here again, too expensive for the variability of quality.

In spite of having a reservation through Open Table, we waited at the bar for an hour. They were busy. We finally were seated. The wait staff treated us well. The owner came by to apologize for the wait. They comped us Agee items.

The food is worth the wait. It is a creative twist on traditional Indian fare.

I will return.

The food presentation was great. Even after having our reservation there was poor mismanagement and they didn’t seat us until an hour later. The food taste was average - it was also too loud to have a conversation. If given a choice, I would not go back here again.

Rahi is terrific. We had a wonderful meal, with excellent service. The owner was at Rahi the evening we dined, and we had a long and pleasant conversation with him about the philosophy behind the menu and the change from its previous incarnation (Tapestry) at this location, which was more fusion than authentic. We liked Tapestry, but Rahi is much, much better. If you go, don't miss the artichoke/edamame starter. Our reaction was, "How'd they do that?" and "Can we figure that out?"

Nice twist and take on so.e of the classic Indian dishes. However food is too creamy and buttery masking the true flavors of Indian cuisine. Some of the innovations on Indian classics didn't turn out to be that great. Breads are dry and brittle (except the malai naan which was awesome). Cocktails seems ok. Nothing WoW about this place.....just a elevated version of classic Indian foods that do not always turn out to be successful.

After trying many Indian restaurants in city from Junoon to Aroqa to Indian Accent to name a few; we ended up in Rahi. And I must say it’s the best. Creative designer delicious food topped with 5 star service and ambiance. Must try. Try the lasooni chicken Kabab. You will love the succulent juicy taste.
