Opened in 1980, La Ripaille is one of the oldest restaurants in West Village. Some of the regulars have been coming for as long as 25 years. We want everyone to feel welcome here, whether it’s the celebrities who frequent, the children for whom we provide games & crayons, or the people who live in the Village.

The owner, Alain Laurent, is integral in the day-to-day processes of La Ripaille. He daily scours the market for the freshest produce, often choosing the day’s specials based on his finds. This keeps the specials seasonal & unique. He decorates the ever changing wine list with the best wines available. The restaurant itself is beautiful, with a terrace for the summer & a fireplace in the back for the winter. Second time at this wonderful restaurant. Cozy and quiet enough for conversation--a hard combo to find in Manhattan. Good for special occasions. Great food with ample choices a for vegetarians. The mushroom appetizer is especially delicious. Friendly and helpful service and the owner comes over the table. Highly recommend!

Walking in your greeted like your coming home from college. The owner tajes your order makes suggestions and prepares you for a wonderful meal. The food was awesome and the dessert was in my top three of all time

We have eaten at La Ripaille hundreds of times and it never disappoints! Every bite is delightful, the service impeccable and the old-world charm transports you to another time. The specials are special and dessert not to be missed. Alain the owner is so charming you want to take every meal with him. 3 courses later, we are full and sated, yet all is sitting lightly on the palette.

This is one of our favorite restaurants. The food is consistently delicious. The owner is warm and welcoming. When you walk into the restaurant, you truly feel as though you have left NYC and have walked into a lovely restaurant in France. It is small, quiet, candlelit. I usually get the broccoli mousse and the branzino which is served in a ginger Thai broth. I’m just a creature of habit. My dining partner had the flambéd mushrooms in puff pastry and the salmon special. The desserts are equally delicious although my favorite is the chocolate mousse. We love the wine list. Perfect for the evening when you want to dine or celebrate a special occasion.

We had a lovely dinner here last Saturday. The place is cozy, the service friendly and attentive without being overbearing. The owner is still deeply involved and very friendly even after dealing with New York diners for over 40 years. Food was wonderful. We went with the specials for the evening with the exception of 2 appetizers, an uncommonly prepared escargot and the broccoli mousse, both excellent. We haven't had a date night dinner this satisfying in quite a while.

We absolutely loved our dinner here and will definitely be coming back! When we first walked in it was a little quiet so we were worried - but the food, service, and ambiance was incredible! The host is very outgoing and convinced us to try the specials and it did not disappoint. Cozy and comforting French spot. Duck special was so good - my boyfriend was hesitant to try and ending up stealing three more bites! He loved his chicken special. Can’t recommend this place enough and give it a try!

Everything was perfect. The food was fantastic. The service was impeccable. The atmosphere was wonderful. We had been away from NYC and missed La Ripaille. We received heartwarming hugs from Alain.

I had a wonderful birthday dinner at La Ripaille. The owner and staff were friendly and made an excellent wine recommendation. The Mousse de Brocoli was outstanding, as was the fish special (bass.) My wife loved her main, too, the Lamb Shank. Maybe the plates could have come out hot, instead of only warm? Otherwise we are guaranteed to return. Merci pour une soir pleine de bonhomie et gastronomie!

We had a lovely dinner there. The place is a gem. A real throw back to the old days of a small family run French bistro. This is actually the genuine article. The owner is very present and is part of the authentic atmosphere. The food is old school delicious French cooking—like Paris in the old days. Delicious sauces with lots of butter and cream. And Piaf on frequent rotation on the sound system. No irony here. Such a pleasure!

We had a wonderful evening! The food was absolutely fantastic, we never left a bite on our plates. The waiters were just the right amount of knowledgeable, friendly and courteous. The ambience was small and intimate, we would go back there in a heartbeat!

This restaurant was fabulous! Food was outstanding. The puffed pastry stuffed with mushrooms was lick you plate delicious followed by the best French chicken dish we ever had! The chocolate mouse was smooth and so creamy! It is a small restaurant with an owner and 2 waiters. Gracious service and wonderful food!

I/we have been going to La Ripaille for almost 40 years and look to it as our go to restaurant for special occasions and try to enjoy a dinner there every time we come into the city. We love the food, the location and of course the staff. The owner is always involved and we enjoy his help in deciding our choices for dinner. I can't think of a better place to enjoy a great meal in a wonderful bistro in a great location with a wonderful staff, chef, owner.

We had a marvelous time! The food was excellent and the proprietor was effusive and very helpful with menu selections. The ambiance was authentic and cozy and my four sisters and I truly enjoyed our time there. It was a very special and memorable experience that we would heartily recommend!

I'm not a local, but whenever I'm in NYC we make a point of dining at La Ripaille, which is exactly the kind of family-owned and operated restaurant that many of us seek out. Modest in size, rich in ambiance and excellent French cooking. The proprietor makes the rounds, describing dishes beyond what's on the menu and providing recommendations that are well worth following. The combination of wonderful meals and a convivial and personal ambiance is superb.

La Ripaille is a jewel of the West Village. From start to finish, a night inside is a delicious treat to savor and remember. Start with the Broccoli Mousse (two new words you need to add to your vocabulary and that need to be capitalized!), unless one of the special appetizers tempts you (the rillette de saumon is unbeatable and my current favorite) ... I'm a fish and chicken guy, and last night's (special) chicken paillard was the best I've ever had, served beautifully with arugula and tomatoes. Alain, the owner and host, creates a warm and welcoming environment, and time sort of stops when you're inside 605 Hudson Street. Happily, there's always room for one of the delicious desserts: the Lemon Tarte (again, MUST be capitalized-it's that wonderful) is a family recipe and not to be missed. Like every friend I've ever taken here, you'll want to return again and again. Maybe I'll see you there? :-)

This place is charming. Been meaning to come here a very long time. Well worth the wait. The owner (Alain) is as charming as the bistro . Impeccable service, Incredible French traditional dishes, and by far one of the best new restaurants I have tried in Manhattan in years. Highly recommend.
