Nothing special about this restaurant. Does not deserve the high rating. Streak frite was spoiled by too much salt in the Demi glaze.
The service was ok. Too noisy.
The service was great. It was a busy Sunday evening and the servers were still very attentive. Our waters were refilled immediately after we finished our glasses. I felt bad because we drank a lot of water too, but that was due to some of our entrees being a little too salty. The food this time around was not up to the same quality as our past experiences. A little disappointing, but the steak tartare (reason why we dine here) was still delicious!
Service was exacting, pear salad and mussels outstanding- a warm, neighborhood-feel dining room. Just lovely.
Hard to read menu at the table due to its color & lack of table lighting. Outstanding service. Noise level a bit distracting.
Dinner was a huge disappointment. Server forgot to give us bread. The fried tripe was cooked well but with a way over salted breading. The skate dish was almost inedible, drenched in a butter caper sauce and served on the bone. The $29.00 foie gras was delicious but minuscule. Very nice but extravagantly expensive wine list.
It was a wonderful meal, the tripe small plate was fantastic. My wife's steak frites were wonderful. The rabbit sausage special was really great.
Server (Shelby) was amazing!! He made sure we ended on a good note. The food on the other hand did not go as well. Normally the food is on point, but this time that was not the case. My mother sent back two separate dishes. The first smelt horrible and wasn’t edible, the second was weird and couldn’t be eaten. Normally we love the food, so I know this one a unique and unfortunate experience.
We made a Reservation for 7:15 and were seated at 750.
The spicing on the food was excellent but the mussels and the bucatini were ruined by unbelievable over salting.
Our waitress was excellent
Great food and wine selection. Very loud. Overall good experience.
We celebrated my husband's birthday last night at the chef's counter. The food was decadent, the Burgundy 1er Cru was (obviously) complex and beautiful. Service was excellent. So grateful to St. Jack for providing us with such an amazing experience.
The mussels were among the best we’ve ever eaten. If you can’t get a reservation, try the bar, which seems to have most of the same eating choices.
Once again, excellent meal and service at St Jacks. My only complaint was the initial noise level, which was very unpleasant due to groups of 4 and 6 nearby. Once their food arrived they quieted down.
Nice evening, great waiter, very good food. Classic bistro food with a few twists; tends towards very salty. Pre-entrees are tasty but a bad value (so tiny / pricy), entrees are generous. Pretty room; wish it wasn't quite so loud.
Used to be one of our favorite restaurants. Service was excellent but food awful. They should stick
to the basic French food, menu has gotten to gusted up.
We didn't have a good experience at St. Jack. The waiting staff was nice, but the food was WAY overpriced and the quality below average for the high price. For example, the $14 farmer's salad was more like a side of beets. And the duck, although presented in a festive way, was very salty. The best part of the meal was the bread and butter.
My wife and I drove down from north of Seattle to celebrate her birthday in the Portland area. She researched many restaurants on line and decided to try St. Jack. The one requirement was Foie Gras.
The Foie Gras with honey sauce was excellent, as was the bone marrow. Based on our waitresses recommendation, i tried the Skate Wing, which was also excellent. Our waitress was very knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. We had a great time and will go back again.
Great experience at the chefs table
This was our second visit to St Jacks. The food was outstanding and our server was attentive and knowledgable, but the noise level made it difficult to hear the detailed explanations of the food preparations and conversing was tough as well. It seems that hip restaurants in PDX simply do not bother to consider noise pollution... or figure it in as a MAJOR ELEMENT in client enjoyment factor... I do not think we will go again.
But...without a doubt the food is lovely and a joy to partake...
The food was divine. We had the beet salad and scallop tartare to start. She had the Duck and I had the Mussels for entree. Both were truly scrumptious. So much so she took her husband back the next night! Beautiful atmosphere, great service. Very attentive staff. Highly recommend. Well worth the money.
We were requested to immediately move from our table once done with dinner, we did not linger unnecessarily or idly chat. The waiter informed us our dinner took longer to prepare than most dishes. Immediately after finishing the main course dessert menus were brought, but the hostess took them away and requested us to sit at the bar to clear our table for the next patrons.
Frankly it was offensive and ruined a nice dining experience, especially since the table next to us was already seated when we arrived and were still enjoying their dinner after we left.
We were over dressed for anywhere in Portland, and were quietly interacting, no rude interactions with staff. We are both healthy care professionals , great manors , so no idea why we were treated this way. Too many other better places to dine than at St Jack’s.
Service was great. Food was amazing! Ambience was perfect for our anniversary
Amazing restaurant on 23rd avenue. French cafe ambiance, very knowledgeable and friendly staff, amazing food presentation and taste. Good wine selection. Will definitely return !
We had a lovely time dining at St. Jacks. The room was loud, but I think that has something to do with the acoustics. It was a little hard to hear across the table, but not impossible.
The food was good. For the money it was fair, but not outstanding. The cheese selection was the best part. I suggest going all in on the 5 cheese option.
The service was great! Our server was attentive, knowledgeable, and relaxed. We did not feel rushed at all and really enjoyed our experience. The rest of the staff was supportive and had the same vibe.
Overall we enjoyed our night and would recommend to others to check it out.
Food well prepared and quality ingredients. The presentation of each element was very nice and the server made good recommendations to enhance the experience.
St. Jack's never disappoints! The service from Tyson was fantastic - he had great wine pairing recommendations. The menu is great for sharing and feels like an updated version of traditional French cuisine. It's a great spot to celebrate special occasions, to impress a date, or just for a tasty night out. The dishes are priced right and the ingredients are seasonal. Love this spot!
Service was expectional! Food was delicious. Hang a great night out!
Amazing service, great food. I brought a wide variety of guests from different backgrounds and everyone was very impressed. Aaron and Joanna went above and beyond to accommodate some last minute changes to our booking. From the initial reservation to paying the bill, St Jack was a top notch experience. A must while visiting Portland.
This was our second visit to St. Jack's. On our first visit, two years ago, one of us had the best steak we ever ate. With that in mind, we both ordered steak this time. True, it was a different cut, but that doesn't excuse it's being over cooked to the point of being dry. The demi-glace and bearnaise sauces helped counter that somewhat but not enough. Mushroom toppers for the steak were not listed on the menu, even as a side, but were available for a $7 upcharge. The fries that accompanied the steak weren't as good as we could get at our neighborhood family restaurant.
The service was uneven. In the bar, the server offered us a taste of their eccentric house white, AFTER we had ordered a pot of it. We're grateful he did, because it truly is eccentric. In the restaurant, the server wasn't as helpful, but rather professionally distant. When we ordered our steaks medium rare, she said that they tend to undercook them and we'd probably end up with rare meat (cold center). With that in mind, we asked for between medium and medium rare. When they arrived, the steaks were between medium and medium WELL. When we placed our order for cheese and dessert, the server didn't ask about beverages. In fact, she didn't ask about them until dessert arrived.
Wouldn’t come back in a friday
Good meal great service, love the restaurant!
The braised escargot, stuffed duck neck, and pear and grape salad to finish were perfectly rendered and satisfying as was the Alsatian blend white and L’orange wine.
Everything was on point With the exception of desert.
The food is always solid and the wine is great, but this time the service was awful, especially for a Wednesday night. Dinner was 2 1/2 hours long, primarily because the service was so slow. We ended up eating two large baguettes while waiting for our food, which (delicious as they are) wasn't really what we wanted to fill up on. The noise level is very high, which is okay when you have enough food and wine, but a little grating when you don't.
Food and drinks were great, as expected, but our server (black hair and nails, excellent eyebrows, and a love for cheese), was beyond amazing. She made the experience better than just great food! Ps-I know I’m the worst, can’t remember her name for the life of me!
Sat at the KITCHEN counter and watched the action. Fascinating but high octane. GREAT for a lively evening but I would have a cocktail at the BAR first and get a table for a quieter evening. Highly recommend for the food.
We sat at the counter and watched the kitchen show!
Food was phenomenal. Service was on point. They even gave us a complimentary glass of champagne for our anniversary.
We will definitely be back.
Good food. Terrible service. Our young man long time coming and then evaporated. Went to Canard next night: night and day, better food, lower price, and attentive service. Probably will avoid St Jack in future despite pretty good food in favor of better service and huge selection of VG restaurants.
Review is mixed. Our primary waiter was great but the place was understaffed so he was not available to us as he should have been. Not his fault ~ poor management. The food was good but not worth the price at all. We each had an appetizer, shared a salad and each had an entree. I had the steak tartar and was it was fair but chips were stale. We have foie gras all over the world and their dish was over priced and not worth it. However, the salad we had was fantastic and I recreated it last night. Entrees were ok but nothing noteworthy. We ordered dessert but after 25 minutes waiting for it we gave up and just asked for the check. I would not recommend St. Jack.
Update: I was contacted by the management and they could not be more helpful. As I stated my review was mixed and now conclude just may have been perfect storm. The care and concern the management have shown makes me plan to dine there again and have the upmost St. Jack EXPERIENCE. I have no doubt t will be. As I first said ~ mixed review and we did see the potential. Now I feel it was just an off night and the management DOES care. Just for that I would recommend St. Jack!
Service was attentive but entree was very slow. Aspires to good French country cuisine but wasn’t exceptional. Still, a nice meal.
