Seafood
The Reef, originally called Comptons, was built by the Usina family on a beautiful piece of oceanfront property in tranquil North Beach--three miles north of the Usina Bridge--on land owned by the family for generations. Comptons opened in 1989 and enjoyed great success for the next ten years. It closed in 1999 due to the ill health of Mr. Compton and hurricane damage. There are few remaining true Oceanfront restaurants in Northeast Florida, and of those The Reef, reopened in 2002 under the direct ownership of the Usinas, commands the most spectacular views. Sit at any table inside and the view is dynamic to say the least, or enjoy the recently rebuilt and expanded deck where you not only look out at The Ocean, you listen to it too as the waves break and the birds cry. To complement this vista Chef Bob Henle has created a menu primarily of fish and seafood balanced with beef, poultry pasta and creative specials, always fresh and sourced locally whenever possible.

Our first time here and it was amazing. Attentive staff, food was delicious, and we weren’t rushed at all. Next time we’ll go earlier and eat outside. We’ll definitely be back!

The Reef is a true beachfront treasure! It’s rare to find fabulous oceanfront ambience and upscale dining. The sign of an epicurean seafood destination is one where the majority of the dishes are NOT fried. Menu has a variety of fish, meat and poultry selections. You can have Atlantic Salmon, Flounder, Shrimp, Mussels, Tuna, Maui, Scallops, Duck, Ribeye and includes pasta, rice, salads, soups and sandwiches. I appreciate that they offer a variety of small plate options as well. I enjoyed Saffron Mussels served in a saffron Creme sauce that had diced red and green peppers accompanied by several Parmesan crostini’s. The wine I paired was new too me and a perfect choice, French Vouvray. The dish was incredible and the Saffron flavors in the sauce complimented the mussels perfectly. I liked the meal so much I chose a the Chef’s Seafood salad to take home. I want to also give a shout out to the hostess and Anna the waitress for their service. This is a longtime family restaurant that is anything but complacent and I felt that everyone was dedicated to providing the best food in a delightful seaside setting!

Went to The Reef for our one year anniversary with one other couple. We had requested a table with a view of the ocean and although all of the tables up against the window were taken we were seated at an upper tier with a view that was just as nice.

Service was excellent - drinks and appetizers were brought quickly. All of our special requests to omit or add ingredients to our entrees were accommodated - a good sign that each meal is prepared to order.

We had a 715 RSVP. We arrived an hour early. And for the heck of it we went inside to see if it was possible to be seated. I was telling myself no way in my mind. They were extremely busy. We requested to sit outside. And in 30 seconds we were being seated. From the hostess to the waiter to the chef. They all deserve 5 stars. It’s a 90 mile drive for us. But I can tell you this we would’ve drove further if we had to. We will definitely be back soon. Sincerely, Willie and Jamie Brant.

My husband and I went for our anniversary. The food was delicious, only one piece of seafood was a little over cooked. The wait staff was very good despite the crowd. The house made key lime pie was the best I or my husband had every had. We would certainly go again next time we visit the area.

It was a good restaurant, the calamari was good with an excellent sauce, but my main dish could’ve been seasoned a little better and for the price I paid, it should’ve tasted a little better, the meal was just good, nothing really stood out about it, but I would still recommend the restaurant if you don’t mind paying extra for the ambiance(which definitely made up for it).

I went to The Reef to celebrate my birthday. The food was excellent (I had the duck) but the service was a bit slow due to someone booking three tour groups to arrive at around the same time. Because of the tour groups I felt a bit neglected by my server. Also I when I reserved I was prompted to let the restaurant know if it was a special occasion. I did but it made no difference. There was nothing to mark my birthday at my table and the table I was seated at was a way back from the windows that look over the ocean. Either the restaurant shouldn't bother asking if it is a special occasion or should pay more attention to people celebrating special occasions.

Our meal was horrible ....bland and the fish was dry and a poor cut of mahi.
the service was slow....we ran out of water and she never came back to refill. I finally just
estimated what I thought the total would be and left the cash as we were walking out, the waitress
came running up to us with the check.
Our table was in the corner of the deck where there was no light. I was so dark that I couldn't see my meal.

Big disappointment

My and I had a great lunch overlooking the beach where we saw 3 seals swimming by. I had the scallops which were outstanding and my friend had the blackened fish tacos which she said were very good as well. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. An overall great place to dine.

Not anywhere near what it used to be. Prices have increased which would be no problem if food and atmosphere supported a higher end restaurant.

Everything was delicious. Lovely setting. Some of the best mussels we've ever had. This is a hidden gem in the St. Augustine areas, especially for fresh seafood which is surprisingly hard to find in this area.

We were very disappointed with our experience. We waited well over 2.5 hrs just to receive one appetizer and two entrees. The young man clearing tables came over twice to ask if anyone had taken our drink order and told us our server was behind because she had been given too many tables. During the long wait, I asked the manager to check on a drink we had ordered 20 minutes prior. The drink arrived and he never came back to check on things again during our meal. I spoke with the server at the end of the meal letting her know we were disappointed. She blamed the kitchen and said, “it’s just this way on Friday and Saturday this time of the year.” As we were leaving I asked to speak to the manager letting him know we had been there almost 3 hrs. His response was thanks for letting him know. If you would like to spend over $100 and wait almost 3 hours for an appetizer and an entree, this is your spot.
