Southeast Asian
Bone Kettle, a Southeast Asian kitchen serving bone broth and culturally-inspired creative small plates, is a polished yet casual concept located in Pasadena. As the executive chef and co-owner of Komodo, Erwin Tjahyadi was inspired by his recent travels across Southeast Asia to create an entirely new concept showcasing the rich tastes and flavors of his explorations abroad. Through 36 hours of boiling, Bone Kettle’s bone broth is made using traditional cooking techniques and fresh, ethnic ingredients reflective of Asian culture. For all the hype, I was very disappointed. We went for lunch. The noodle soup was ok but not great. The ox tails were served separately and difficult to eat - a lot of work to get the small bits of meat. My friend got a fried rice dish that she thought was "meh". I might give it another try before dismissing it entirely.

I really want this food to be more interesting and memorable than it is. The broth should be amazing, but it’s nothing out of the ordinary in the LA area. There is more flavorful broth within walking distance of this restaurant. Appetizers are overpriced and not delicious, and the servers push them hard to upsell you. I’ve given the place three shots and all I really remember is the pushy service. It’s just not that great, and I’m not sure what all the fuss is about.

We enjoyed everything from service to food to ambiance!! Their specialty is the bone broth noodle but there is also a vegetarian option for non-meat eaters. The menu is mostly South East Asian influenced as well as creative Asian fusion. Definitely a must try when you're out and about in Old Town!

Very heavy taste. Salty and spicy. Several dishes tastes the same. First bite = good. Then it's way too salty. Also, please Ashley the server if you wait more than 5 min for the course. I didn't speak up, end up waited 45 min. Cause server forgot the entrees after appetizer.

Me and a couple of friends had a 7pm reservation. At check-in at 7pm, I was told our table was not quite ready, but would be in about 10 minutes. The hostess said we could wait outside. Approximately 20 minutes later, I checked back in to inquire about our table. She said it was not ready, but they will work on getting it clear. She asked if we were outside. We said "yes" because that is where she said we could wait. She replied, "Oh yeah, I did say that." She was apologetic and she offered our party a round of drinks on the house. I accepted with the caveat that we get seated within 10 minutes. We went to the bar and ordered our drinks. They only had a handful of wines to choose from (no spirits). My friends ordered a chablis. I ordered a Syrah. The 20 something who took our request seemed confused about our requests. It didn't sound like he knew wine at all. He asked somebody else and our drinks were provided. The syrah wasn't bad. My friends enjoyed the chablis. About 10-15 minutes later, we were seated. The servers were generally prompt and attentive. My friends seemed to enjoy their food. I ordered the bone marrow, a cup of bone broth, and their gnocchi. The bone marrow offered was a healthy portion. With bone marrow, it is hard to tell how much marrow you will get. But, this bone had a generous amount of marrow. The toast was cold and not that toasty which detracts from the bone marrow dish. The gnocchi was only ok. It was a very generous portion, but the gnocchi itself was not that soft. Finally, they forgot to bring my cup of bone broth so I just canceled it. So, overall, it wasn't a horrible experience. It just wasn't a top notch experience. The portions were generous. The food just above average. I might try it once more if I am in the area. But, I don't know that I will choose it as a destination spot as I live about an hour away.

Unfortunately the food was not great except for the chicken wings. Chinese broccoli arrived late and was totally over cooked. Ordered chicken for the soup and it was an entire breast cut in very thick slices that were difficult to eat. Broth itself was over salted.

For the type of food they serve, the dim lighting is rather inappropriate since it's basically a noodle shop...a VERY overpriced noodle shop when you think about the fact that they're $11 a bowl, without ANY meat, just a few slices of carrots (none of the infamous baby carrots) and sprouts. To add a few thin slices of beef will put you close to $30. Save your money and go to a ramen shop instead where you get much more bang for your bucks. The soup is rich, but it's pretty much enriched pho soup with maybe some of the Chinese beef stew flavoring mixed into it, nothing THAT special. And the thing with them pouring the soup into your noodles? The server did it so quickly I didn't even get a chance to enjoy him doing it. It would've been nicer if we got to do that on our own. Not to mention, chinese noodle shops offer dishes where the noodles and soup are separated for 1/3 of the price. The steak tartare was good, but it was so dim inside my dinner companion pointed out you can't even see if the steak is discolored. The oxtail dumplings are SO SALTY. Actually everything was oversalted. We were chugging water for the rest of the night. I really can't recommend the place.

But my friends had all the other broths and loved them. Great to share a few things and have the broth and noodles. Setting is stunning with Mural along main wall.

We tried this restaurant to sample a different cuisine. Their specialty is long simmered broth soups with various ingredients added. This dish was tasty. My colleague was not in the mood for soup and the limited alternatives to their specialty left him less satisfied. My recommendation is to check out the menu to see if there is something that you want. Good service, interesting beer selection.
