For a late evening, finer dining experience this is the spot in Rancho Bernardo.
Always lovely food and great service. A place to linger and enjoy the food.
If you stick to the specials you cannot go wrong. The scallops and duck are delicious as well as the branzino
Great food. Knowledgeable and friendly staff. Intimate setting. Very, very good food.
We had read reviews about slow service on Trip Advisor but other reviews sounded good so we decided to go. We were surprised and disturbed that there was only one person handling everything outside of the cooking and only one person handling the cooking but that was OK as there was only two or three tables occupied. It did take longer than expected to get the attention of the waiter given the numbers in the room but decided we could go along with that until a party of 14, with participants obviously known to the waiter/owner? arrived. We did have to attract the attention of the waiter so that we could give our orders for dinner. My husband enjoyed his liver selection. My lamb chops with rosemary were sub par. They were thin - 1/2 inch vs the 1 inch I usually receive in restaurants and could discern no rosemary taste. Just a red looking sauce . We decided not to stay for coffee/tea/dessert as I couldn't see that there would be any improvement with the service given the large party demanding attention. So our evening was incomplete
Bad service , horrible food , the restaurant look Dirty. I never coming back
The food was outstanding, prices were very reasonable, and we were very happy. I had the Rack of Lamb, amazing, my husband’s was the Short Ribs, also delicious, all meat, no fat, tender. The service was honestly a little to be desired tonight, but it seemed that maybe they were lacking help, so we will not slight them for that. Another patron we chatted with said they have always had great food and service, so we recognize an off night. All around, very good.
My grandson and I had a wonderful dining experience in a lovely setting on the patio. The food was beautifully presented and cooked to perfection. My grandson's steak was cooked as requested and it was the best salmon I have ever had. The service was excellent since the waiter particularly catered to a young person making it a fun lunch!
Waiter was horrible. Took our order then we didn’t see him again until he gave us the check. Food was just OK and was served on dirty dishes. Horrible experience.
Understaffed and took a while to get our desert then our check. Had to go up to the counter to pay.
The food was fine, the service was disappointing. The one who served my table paid way more attention and better attitude to other customers than my party from the beginning. There was only 2 other tables, I made reservation and arrived on time. I was never asked if I need any drinks, but the server asked the table behind me even they arrived after me. When I requested attention after I ordered my food, the server made me wait for a few minutes before attending to me. When I expressed I was upset, the server made me feel it was my fault. Throughout the entire meal course the server paid no attention to my table if my party need anything. I have been living in community more than than 10 years, this is one of the worst dining experience that I had.
Very friendly, knowledgeable staff. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting. My second time in and I plan to make this place a regular on my restaurant rotation. Wine list is perfect as are the meal portions. Not too much, not too little. Just right.
Great meal, wonderful place and good service.
We went the 1st night of Restaurant Week because the menu looked good and was very well priced. Unfortunately, they were understaffed and we had to wait 20 minutes after the time of our reservation to be seated. Despite this inauspicious beginning, we had a wonderful evening. My wife loved her escargots and beef tenderloin with cabernet sauce and my ravioli with shrimp and baked branzino with cream sauce were all delicious and generously portioned. Ditto the dessert. It's a small, casually appointed restaurant, with no TV over the bar (thank goodness) and quiet enough to allow actual conversation with your dinner partner. Although it's a bit of a drive from San Diego, the trip was well worth it and we will certainly return.
Very enjoyable night out for the start of restaurant week
Rancho Bernardo hidden gem. Definitely get on their e-mail for one or two day specials.
We had an excellent dinner on a quiet weeknight; the setting was romantic, with the softly lit patio and open doors into the dining room. Patrick, the owner, was our host and server, and offered excellent suggestions for wine to pair with our dinners. We had the rack of lamb and braised short ribs; both excellent. The crusty bread and the desserts were also excellent. It was the first time we had eaten there in 10 years, and we are very glad to see that they are still open and doing well. Won't wait another 10 years before we dine there again.
I gave this restaurant only two stars because the service was so bad it was almost comical! This happened to us last time we went there, but we thought maybe that was an isolated incident.
One table of six in the restaurant (they were seated when we arrived) actually got up en masse and started to leave because they were tired of waiting so long!
All that being said, the "Chicken Bercy" was delicious!
If we go back, we'll plan on really poor service, then we won't be disappointed!
We came in as a family for lunch and the food was excellent. The decor could use some updating, but a great overall dining experience.
Very authentic and intimate . Excellent food and services by the owner.
Great food and good service....only problem was the small (and very annoying) fruit flies or gnats or whatever that were buzzing about the entire evening. Mentioned it to the owner and were told that they always seem to come in during this time of year, possibly due to heat. Seems as though this issue could be resolved as it appears to be an annual happening. Other than that, great evening with friends, good food and wine. Will return
Wow! Amazing food! It is like being in a small village tucked away cafe in Provence. Everytime simply délicieux! Do not go if you are in a rush, and why would you hurry out of this quaint old world French gem, with Patrick as your maitre d', server and haute cuisine expert? Rack of lamb last time, steak and lobster this time. Be sure to ask for the warm French bread to soak up all the sauces! Cannot wait to go back....cap the meal off with one of the desserts....apple tarte tatin....banana Fosters cheesecake.....do I have to share? Yummy!
I have dined at the French Market a number of times, and the food, the service, and the ambience have always ben superb.
Always love the French Market Grill. Braised short ribs were great and the
Duck Cassoulet was every bit as good as when I had it in France last month.
Highly recommend! !
A friend took us to dinner at the French Market Grille on a balmy Friday evening. We decided to sit outdoors and were seated at table in a quiet corner of a well landscaped covered dining area. All three courses (salad, main, dessert) were simply superb--especially the grilled beef tenderloin in Cabernet sauce that was incredibly tender and grilled to perfection. No doubt about it, Mrs. Lovebird and I will be back to this neighborhood gem.
Wholesome dinner, the plates were generous, and the price very reasonable.
A quiet comfortable setting made for an enjoyable evening.
A nice Wine selection too.
Always excellent, I visit every time I am in town. Tried the halibut this time, yummy.
We both had the Sea Bass and it was Amazing!! The service was excellent. I would definitely come back again.
Always enjoy the great food at the French Market Grille.
I've shared the brilliant experience of French Market Grille with friends & family for 25 years (approximately). The staff makes you feel like a VIP. I crave the food--my fave is calf's liver. Love the patio & fireplace--romantic yet like home.
We really enjoyed our meal at this restaurant. It is tastefully decorated, quiet conversation, comfortable and has an excellent menu. We will definitely go again.
Our second time here. First time was Valentine’s Day and the food was great but, as you could expect, the place was super busy. The staff did their best and so it warranted another visit. This time we had the sea bass, short ribs, and the lemon meringue tart. The food, the wine, the dessert was all great. Will return.
We dine at the French Market Grill 3 or 4 times a year and have for many years now. It is solid as a predictable, comfortable and high value restaurant. The wine list is not extensive and we often bring our own bottle for that reason. We often take guests there and have found that they always find something to their liking. It is what we would characterize as a neighborhood gem. So many restaurant reviews seem aimed at finding something wrong rather than whether the restaurant provided, overall, a pleasant experience. This one provides just that.
One of my favorite French restaurants! My date had the lamb chop and I had the short ribs and they were both delicious. Very romantic and quiet, so easy to care on a conversation at the table.
Lovely evening, good wine pour, nice interaction with staff.
Very pleasant authentic interior in a strip mall - unexpected. Great service and food. Extensive wine list.
Valentines Day. The place was very busy. It seemed to be understaff, but the small staff was working extremely hard to meet the demand, so service was a bit slow. The food however was excellent. We had the appetizer with shrimp and mushroom and the sea bass as an entre. We had a great time. Did not order coffee because the staff was slammed and we did not want to wait.need to go back on a regular night.
Service was awful. Food was good.
A valentines three course menu had been prepared with a nice variety to choose from. Seating was expedited which was nice. The ambiance was also nice. As the venue began filling up, the service quickly diminished. The food was very good once it arrived. After the main course, the wait was extremely long for the final course. Overall the experience would have been better if the service had not diminished.
