The food is not worth the exorbitant pricing. As well the service was very poor. We were asked up front by the first waiter if we had any food allergies or other considerations - we said no goat cheese and no truffle. Two minutes later the first amuse bouche came out and it had truffle. We were so shocked we just let it pass. Course number three came out and was truffle again!!! Seriously!!! We called the waiter over and reminded him of what we said; he apologized and said it was his fault. That was it though. No Manager came over to apologize; no discount on the crazy price we paid for the truffle even though we told them we couldn't eat it. Then to top it off we asked for coffees, waited 20 min and nothing came. We had to ask again because they forgot.
There are many great restaurants in NYC - go to them instead!
Overall it’s a great experience. Many dishes are so inspiring and amazing. However, I don’t like the texture of roasted lobster. That’s the only disappointing thing.
Born and raised in New York City and this has been my best dining experience each time I have been here.
The Modern is truly one of the great restaurants in NYC. Outstanding food, impeccable service and a delightful setting. We had the three course lunch in the main dining room. All the choices were terrific. The service is incredible, perhaps the best we have had at a restaurant. The wine list is amazing, although at almost 100 pages, a bit overwhelming.
The setting in the main dining room is beautiful- both inside the room and the view to the courtyard of MoMa.
We can't wait to return to NYC and eat at the Modern again!
Food and service were some of the best we’ve experienced.
Great wine pairing and nice food. Particularly love the courtyard view. It was a great way to spend an indulgent and relaxing afternoon.
The service was incredible! We went when they had the tasting menu so everything was brought out and described in detail. There were several small items brought out to us throughout the course along with our main meal. I felt the main meal was very small and not a sufficient amount of food. I felt as thought it was only a small fraction larger than some of the one piece items we had to try throughout the course.
The Modern is excellent. I don't understand the pricing system. Basically, one is forced to take a dessert, even if you don't want it. It's included in the high price. So, as disciplined as one is, leaving on your plate a delicious dessert you've paid for is very hard. I really hate that system. And, I'm very reluctant to go back to Modern, just for that reason.
Wonderful food and great and attentive service. I would not hesitate to recommend a visit.
Beautiful and exceptional food and service.
Best restaurant in NYC
Excellent! We celebrated a special occasion and The Modern lived up to the task beautifully. Elegant preparations - all delicious and small but totally correct serving sizes so that we all left feeling perfectly satisfied and not overstuffed (as is the case with many tasting menus). Would definitely return!
Wonderful food and service. We’ve gone twice for our anniversary and just took a friend there for her first visit. She loved every aspect of it , as did we.
Absolutely delightful! Service was unparalleled and the food was so delicious beautifully presented and exquisite in taste and texture. It was an incredibly enjoyable afternoon and so relaxing. The ambience was sophisticated and pleasant. It was a very calming atmosphere.
The food was not tasty for the price.
I was very impressed on my first visit, but this time surpassed it. I have enjoyed many fine tasting menus/fixed price menus. Almost always at least one course, while creative, is less than entirely successful. This one was consistently at the very highest level, arguably the best meal I have ever had. The service is also of the highest quality, and the ambience extremely pleasant (the outside view is attractive any time of year). All this does not come cheap, but when comparing prices with restaurants of this class, do note that there is no gratuity: so one is not going to be paying a NYC-type tip for an upscale restaurant.
If you have dined here before, but not recently, there has been a change in the structure of the menu: one now has a choice for three of the six courses (but there are still six, and they are six real courses--a sorbet comes in addition). Highly recommended for special occasions.
The staff could make a better work on making the service, and attention as special, and refined as the food. The multi course menu is superb.
Very expensive, not much food, slow and uncomfortable seating for most of the tables/chairs in the main dining room. My wife and I were placed at long oblong table and had to sit strangely at the bench-seating to see, talk to each other through the meal. And most of the tables were like this (for the two-seats; the 4+ tables were in the center of the room, and had traditional seats and arrangements). Bathroom odors drifted into the dining rooms throughout the 3.5hour meal.
Wonderful menu and “surprise” courses in between, as well as the usual tasty amuse bouche.
This is the best dining experience I've ever had in my life. Exceptional service, food, and ambiance. Food was phenomenal.
Amazing Place !!!! The Modern , The Experience !!!!!! For those whom appreciate High Gastronomy and a lifetime experience , open your senses and enjoy it !!!!
Most of the food was very good and all the food was beautifully presented. All 4 people at our table agreed that the honeynut squash was outstanding and by far the best dish served. The amuse-bouche was very good - but the problem with it is that the crust is not stable and it broke up in everyone's hands - making everyone's hands wind up with food on them after the very first course - not good. That is an issue the kitchen should fix. The one food that was rated very poor and was rejected as unacceptable and uneatable was the dessert ants on a log. This dessert has celery as a prominent component. The wine stewardess was very helpful recommending an alternative wine when our original wine selection was not available - however she was specifically asked to write down the name of the wine she recommended and give it to us - and she never did that. Our server, Fiona, was generally good - however she was highly chastised by our table for initially picking up my wine glass before it was finished - which I caught and had her replace, and then she picked up my sposue's wine glass before it was finished and we were unable to catch her before she wisked it away. A good server NEVER removes a wine glass from the table without asking permission, because many people, myself included, like to wait for the last wine drop.
Fantastic in all regards
Perhaps my favorite restaurant in the US. They earn my admiration for delicious creative cuisine, magnificent wines and gracious but unpretentious service. I will be back again and again
I absolutely loved it. It’s right up there with Eleven Madison Park for food quality and service. Our hostess, Pamela, was so sweet and attentive.
What price food? Once in a lifetime, The Modern is worth it. A sensory tour de force full of light touches and intense flavors. The delectable and exquisite tasting menu comes with a twist: You pick three dishes and they surprise you with three of the chef's choosing. In short, it's a Michelin two-star restaurant without the pretense yet close to perfection.
Food was good but service was so slow... waited at least 50 mins for the the first course with no even bread or anything on the table besides water and for drinks waited 30min... despite the waiter been nice it changes and downgraded the whole experience for a Michelin star restaurant...
Never fails to thrill. Outstanding in every respect. One of my favorite restaurants in the world.
This place is perfect for any type of special occasion and the ambiance is great.
The tasting menu was very creative and everything served was superb; service was excellent. Very memorable dining experience.
Dining at The Modern is a really treat. Every course is beautifully presented and a creative blend of flavors and ingredients. The wait staff is attentive to detail but does not hover. The Modern is at the top of our list for a great dining experience when we travel to New York.
The food was delicious and creatively presented, and the service was marvelous -- the servers werw NICE!
An exceptional experience. We will return very soon!
I would say this is the best tasting restaurant I’ve eaten in my life. Service was impeccable and hospitality is included. I will definitely be back here again. We celebrate our third year wedding anniversary here and I don’t think I could have picked a better place to do so.
We love their vegan tasting menu! Very creative and simply amazing!
The modern never disappoints. Excellent and creativite cuisine by the chef who never stops to amaze
Most flavorful and interesting food I have ever eaten!
Impeccable. Really, true fine dining.
Food was fantastic and the location was unbeatable. My only complaint is the service which didn't seem to live up to its Michelin 2 star rating. Selection of bread was also limited for such a high end restaurant.
Excellent service, beautiful presentation
