The largest party we can accommodate is six people. We have only one table that can seat 5 or 6 people. 6 people is the maximum party size that can be accommodated in restaurant. Reservations cannot be combined to create larger parties.
Reservations can be held for up to 15 minutes past the reservation time before forfeiture.
This place is consistently outstanding both in the food and the service. The wait staff is so helpful and friendly.....its always such a pleasure to go here.
Frances continues to be one of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco- it never fails to deliver an exceptional dining experience. Simply put - the food is to die for.
Basically the best experience we could have asked for
The service was outstanding. The food was regular to not that great. The garbanza fritters we had high hopes for, were actually not good at all and we didn't eat them.
We always celebrate our anniversary and other celebrations here. The food always hits the spot!
They asked us to move to the bar to seat someone else while we were drinking our wine and talking about a dead relative. Our wine was our dessert, if we were eating they wouldn’t have asked.
Food was great as always
Food took a while to come out. Wait staff was so great and very sweet to my 4 yr old!
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Wait staff and others were excellent!
We love this place and the incredibly professional kitchen and table staff. Food prep, pace, and presentation was perfect. We brought 4 friends and they were impressed with our good taste and ordered up!!
Just fantastic! Small, amazing food, lovely ambience.
Frances is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. Great, intimate ambiance. Fantastic service. Always consistently delicious food.
Lovely, cozy atmosphere. Food was good, but nothing noteworthy.
Thanks again to everyone that work at Frances! It’s was delicious as always! See you next year!
This place continues to impress with its outstanding food, cozy atmosphere and exceptional service.
I made the reservation for an early time because I had been warned about the noise the level the later you go. I asked the reservation person to please let the waiter know there was a birthday and the clean shaven person was the birthday person. I said that whether or not we order dessert, to bring one with a candle. It was to be a surprise. When dessert time came, the waiter asked which of us was the birthday person, spoiling the surprise. The food is unique and complex and may require a more sophisticated palate then my own....
I would go back to Frances in a heartbeat. My husband and I went for our anniversary—planning ahead with a reservation—and it was a memorable meal. To start with: great service from the moment we sat down. Our appetizers (kale salad with crispy chicken skin and coconut soup) were excellent. In fact, my husband wouldn’t let go of his soup bowl until our bread arrived and he could mop up the remains! (Available upon request, the house-made leaving should not be missed.) We each enjoyed our main course — snapper for me, bavette steak for my husband — and savored each morsel. I really enjoyed the Pavlova for dessert; my husband was less enthused about his choice. The wine selections by the glass let us each sample two very enjoyable wines. Now just have to plan when to make our next reservations!
Very good appetizers. Disappointed with flavors in steak and fish dishes. Pretty noisy, too. Waitress was not as friendly as we’ve experienced in the past. The food was also not outstanding as it has been in the past.
After a couple of years of trying, I was finally able to get a table at Frances. I have to admit that I was expecting something a lot better. The ambiance is not cozy or pleasant, the service is mediocre and the food leaves a lot to desire. It's hard to believe that there are still restaurants out there that don't offer options for people with food allergies. The menu is small and because I am allergic to milk and I am a pescatarian, there was not much on the menu that I could have. I ordered a couple of dishes, but they were both average and not worth the price. They also don't offer bottled still water. I won't go back.
Food and service was outstanding. Just wish the counter/bar seats had backs.
Wonderful service, creative food. Loved the bacon beignets, pasta appetizer, steak entree, good wine list
Maybe all the amazing reviews spoiled it a bit for me, but I thought it was just ok. We got the tasting menu and everything was pretty good, but nothing made me go wow. The restaurant is small and loud but the service was friendly and the menu prices reasonable, especially for SF. But for me, it all boils down to the food and it was good, but not great.
Amazing food, and wonderful service. Definitely would recommend!
I love Frances. I feel like the bavette steak has been on the menu for years, and it's never disappointed me. So perfectly done. Glad to see the same staff there too, they go a great job.
This is what Frances has achieved through all these years-elegance and superb cuisine and service. The tasting menu and 1/2 glass wine pours is a phenomenal deal. Superb in every way!
A very decent neighborhood spot: food is well prepared, prices are fair, warm and very competent service. Prix fixe is a good deal. But definitely not destination dining by any means, nothing was very interesting or exceptionally executed.
Consistently excellent food and service. One of the best in the City and Bay Area. Bravo!
The food was excellent and so was the service. Hard to get a reservation for party of 6 but worth it.
Great night out. Jerry was the best And convinced us to do the tasting menu which was absolutely superb, The chef was able to do things for us that were not on the menu.
We did the “Tasting Menu” and loved it! And being able to buy the house wine by the ounce was a nice touch, too. Super friendly staff. Everything came together for a great dinner!
Excellent food, service and wine! Always a winner!
Frances continues to be a great restaurant. However, the prices continue to rise, and I wonder whether $40 for an entree is reasonable. Also, while the servers are very knowledgeable, paying attention is no longer a forte: we had to flag our server down a number of times for things that should have been offered as a matter of course.
Love Frances! This was my second time here and this time they had a tasting menu offering @ $65 per person. This was a ten course meal full of different selections from the menu (We went through 6 appetizers (couple of bites per course), two mains, and two desserts. Everything was delicious! The highlights were the bacon beignets (of course ;)), the Spaghettini with Uni butter (as someone who doesn't like Uni, this was super delicious and I would have happily kept on eating it if there was more), and the Bavette Steak (sitting atop delicious baked corn bread pudding!). We had the house red wine which they sell by the ounce and it was amazing. Highly recommend Frances!
A tough reservation to get, as it seems always busy, even at early hours. We were lucky to get two counter seats at 6:15 PM. The menu is an ecclectic mix of "California fusion" - there definitely are other influences - asian, southwestern, etc., but mostly seems to be inspired by local ingredients and cuisine. The noise level is high, in a pretty small space. The service crew is challenged by the small space, but seem to have choreographed their moves well enough to get around in reasonably quick order. Sometimes you feel like you can't find your service person when you need something, but eventually they get there. At the recommendation of our server, we chose the testing menu - a 10 course meal designed for sharing between two people - fixed price $65/person. A nice mix of vegies, and proteins with some interesting sauces, and myriad of flavors - not things you'd come up with by yourself, but a nice melange... sizes ranged from quick bites(pumpkin&bacon fritters), to main courses (a grilled fish with fruit and vegetables + flank steak with hot peppers & broccolini), and some inbetweens (kale salad with cherry tomato). Desserts were good sized portion, and tasty (a gingerbreadish cake with salted caramel ice cream?, and a apple/fruit compote with rich cream dollop)
Enjoyed food and service!
In one word: lovely! Delicious food, great service, nice wine. I've been there twice and both times I've gotten the tasting menu, which is a great deal and definitely the way to go if it's your first time there. I think that next time I might get the a la carte, just so I can order the amazing-looking pork steak!
Together with sister restaurant Octavia you are guaranteed:
Excellent, creative cuisine.
Friendly, knowledgeable service.
Extremely pleasant, well conceived atmosphere and decor.
Very attractive staff in all ways.
Food and service was above average, but the noise level and cost were off-putting. I doubt I’ll return.
This is the 3rd time we've eaten at Frances and they continue to deliver a wonderful dining experience. From the food to the service, everything was perfect for my husband's birthday dinner!
Absolute must when visiting San Fran! We were amazed by the service and the food was incredible. We did the tasting plate and thought it was great value!
