Although many restaurants in the theater district bill themselves as trattorias, few achieve the authentic feel and taste of Maria Pia. This charming Italian eatery boasts comfortable indoor seating for 80, a sun-dappled, 20-seat, rear outdoor garden, and a genial mood that makes the menu that much more savory. The three-course prix fixe menus offer dishes slick enough for savvy palates that still taste as if they were cooked up by mama Maria herself.

Showed up and the place was empty at 5:30 on a Saturday night. Why? Lost alcoholic beverage licence or something. Not even allowing to BYOB! Rude of them not to tell people in advance.

Really excellent food and service. Our meal was perfection. Amazing pureed bean soup, followed by wonderfully grilled salmon over tasty vegetables, and a sorbet for desert. Delicious decaf coffee as well. Highly recommend. Also, VERY convenient to Broadway shows in the upper West 40s and lower 50s. Off the beaten path and worth crossing 8th Avenue to find!!!

4 of us had a reservation made on line a couple of weeks earlier. Upon entrance, we were told that no liquor of any kind could be sold since the restaurant had no license. Later, found out that the restaurant is under new management, applying for such license. No advance advisement was told to me via email or phone. Italian food without wine????? 3 out of 4 of us liked the food. Recommend verifying liquor license ahead.

Purchased a special Valentine's Day voucher from Pulsd that included two appetizers, two entrees, two desserts and a bottle of Prosecco. Reservation made through Open Table. Arrived Valentine's night and was told the offer had been cancelled. In addition the restaurant lost their liquor license. The voucher was not honored so I had to shell out additional money for dinner. So suffice to say it was not an enjoyable evening. The saving grace was that the food was good. Although I had been to Maria Pia before it will be a long time before I consider patronizing them.

We have been going to Maria Pia for about 5 years now and everything [Food, Service, Ambiance] has always been excellent. We see Book of Mormon on Saturday, 2/8 and scheduled dinner at Maria Pia for 5:30 PM for 6 of us. We got there at 4:30 PM and they told me they did not have any liquor [lost their liquor license?]. The was an odor in the dining area like something from the bathrooms and some of our [2 out of 6] entrees were cold. Very disappointing.

I have been coming to this restaurant on and off over the course of many years. I has always been one of our 'go-to' pre-theater lunch places when we come to NYC for a Broadway show. This time, however, we met with an unusual situation. As soon as we arrived and were about to be seated, the gentleman advised us that their liquor license had been suspended, so they couldn't serve us a glass of wine with our meal. Since we normally do partake of one glass, this was a great disappointment. We had friends with us who had never been to Maria Pia before, and we had spoken highly of it, so, again, it was disappointing. We all made the decision to stay and eat lunch anyway, despite no wine, and the food and service, as always in the past, were excellent. Our friends very much enjoyed their lunch choices, and so did my husband and I. In closing, I would just say that I hope they regain their liquor license in the future, as not having it could prove very detrimental to their ability to remain in business!

Aida was our server~~she was a big part of our unforgettable experience with this restaurant! She was kind, very efficient and gave us excellent service. She went above and beyond to make sure we were able to make our Broadway Show Wicked on time! The food was magnificent and so memorable: LOVED the butternut ravioli, and also the eggplant rigatoni. If you are ever in NYC- Manhattan, this is a must for your dining! You won’t regret it! And ask for Aida!

When we got to Maria Pia, we were asked if we wanted wine or liquor. If so, we needed to go to their restaurant down the street. The maître d’ walked us out of there and down the street to the new restaurant with no name. It is a restaurant that they are promoting and they had a liquor license. Supposedly the menu was the same but I don’t know that for a fact. The service was mediocre the food was fair. There seemed to be confusion every step of the way. It was not crowded, maybe three tables filled. It was a major disappointment all around

This went from a number one restaurant to NEVER AGAIN. The building had a gas leak so we couldn't dine there obviously. They said they had a sister restaurant 4 doors down and would honor our reservation. We were escorted to it and told that our table was being set up. However, we waited 20 min until a table in the front opened up. Why lie that it was being set up? We said we have theatre tickets and were assured that we would make the show in time. We sat for another 20 min before getting water or bread. After 1 hour our food was still not out. We kept being told that it was coming, but we had to leave for the theater. We never ate! Many other diners were complaining, but the manager kept hiding in the back instead of managing the situation. The kitchen could not handle the overflow. Instead of taking care of us, we were deceived and ignored. No restaurant should treat their patrons with such disrespect. How do you risk your reputation like that? To trick everyone that we still want your business tonight and not deliver ANY quality of service is abominable. What a disappointing restaurant.

I booked a 6pm reservation for me and my visiting family so that we could make an 8pm show. The kitchen had an issue, which we weren't notified about. They told us they could seat us right away in their sister restaurant, 2 doors down and that the menu was 'the same'. After making my family of 5 wait in the middle of the busy restaurant for 30 minutes, we sat down around 6:30pm. It took 10 minutes for them to take our drink orders and I had to suggest they bring bread (since none of us had eaten for hours). Another larger table that was sat after us received their appetizers ahead of us and we didn't get our dinner until 7:30pm. The quality of the food was poor - nothing like what I had eaten at the actual Maria Pia. My brother's food was cold. We had to scarf our dinner down and rush over to the theater, which luckily was only a 5 minute walk away. The relaxed family dinner I had hoped for after not seeing my family for months did not materialize. The only saving grace was that (after we demanded it), the restaurant paid for our drinks. I've eaten here once before and had a nice time, but I will hesitate booking here ever again! It's unfortunate because I want to support the old-school restaurants in the neighborhood...

This is a lovely Italian restaurant in a city full of competition, and as a native New Yorker, I can say I will definitely return. My only gripe, and it is a small one, is that when I went there they had a small issue with the city over their liquor license, and could not serve wine. Still, the food was truly exceptional and the service was great. It's also very convenient if you plan on going to the theater.

I was disappointed to find out upon arrival that they have lost their liquor license. In order to even have sambucca in my espresso I would of had to go two doors down in the rain and have my beverage there. Wine, spirits, no alcohol whatsoever available at your table. Deal breaker for me, will not be back, and I have enjoyed several meals here over the years.

We were the only people there. It was an early reservation (4:15) because we were going to a 7:00 show. They no longer have a liquor license, and that may have been the culprit. Food and service was excellent, but of course, there was no competition.

When we arrived for our reservation the host asked if we'd like to order drinks/wine with dinner. We said yes and she suggested she take us a few doors down, to their second location, because the original space does not have a liquor license but the other location does. We were assured the menu and prices were identical. We strolled a few doors down the block and had a lovely evening. Three of four of us really enjoyed our meals. The one entree that was disappointing was the Mushroom Linguini, which was bland. All in all, a lovely, somewhat quiet, find near the theatre district, with good food and service. We'll be back.

We had 4 of us for a pre-show dinner. The food was decent. The menu advertises buffalo mozzarella but when I asked for chicken parm with buffalo (because I’m allergic to cows milk) they didn’t have it. I still got the chicken parm with no cheese. The chicken was very thinly sliced and kind of dry. But it wasn’t bad, just wished they would have come out and told me no buffalo mozzarella so I could have changed order if I wanted to. Service was good. Drinks were good.

I used to love Maria Pia and it was my go to place in the theater area. They now have lost their liquor license. No drinks at all. So they escorted us several doors down the street to where they have a small 2nd restaurant where they can serve alcohol. Don't go there! Frank Sinatra music was blaring on a tape which looped around, playing the same songs repeatedly at a deafening volume. Service was terribly slow; they don't have enough help working there. And maybe the kitchen is very small. Whatever, it was actually stressful, not pleasant to have dinner there. The people who work there are very nice and try to be helpful, but this spin off of Maria Pia is to be avoided, even though they have the same menu and prices. I am waiting for them to resolve the liquor license problem before I go back to the argil Maria Pia and I will never go back to the new spin-off place they have opened.

I f I could give it zero stars I would have. They directed us several doors down the street to their sister restaurant because they temporarily didn't have a liquor license. The restaurant was unfinished, the staff was unpacking and organizing liquor. The restaurant was cold despite the space heater that was on . Everything we ordered from the tea through the main course was cold. The chicken parm was obviously made from a frozen patty. The sauce was like Chef Boyardee. The service matched the quality of the food. All this after we were assured that this sister restaurant would have the same menu and same chef etc. The entire experience was dreadful. We have been going to Maria Pia's for years - every time we're in NYC. We will never return.
