It was one of the best places I have been in DC. The lamb bolognese was superb.

The dishes were vegetable-forward, interesting, and diverse. The staff really aimed to please. (And it was very quiet during our meal since no one was there when we arrived.) I wish there were more whole grains, though, as well as vegetarian options.

We enjoyed a wonderful brunch at Birch and Barley. As a vegetarian, I loved having a number of items to chose between, and I loved the mushroom frittata I chose--flavorful, cheesy and topped by fresh greens. My dining partner raved about the eggs Benedict as the best she's ever had. And...the chef came out and asked everyone in the dining room how our meals were. What a personal touch.

The brunch dishes were very tasty . I liked the cocktail idea of two nice spritzes for $18. My Frittata was delicious and my husbands potato pancakes and gravlax were great. Staff wonderful. Unfortunately everyone was going up to church key to have beer and a different menu so Birch and barley was seriously under represented at Brian’s which is a mistake because it was really nice.

They were SO not prepared for restaurant week. Deeply short staffed and the burger we ordered came out raw inside. The beer flight was three pours of the same beer. The hostess ended up taking our order (eventually) and we ended up getting our drinks comped plus a free extra starter while we waited for them to fix our burger. The responsiveness to our experience was much appreciated but it shouldn't have been necessary. Our apps and desserts were very tasty but the entrees were forgettable. Other than the heroic hostess, no reason to go back. It's a shame.

We dined at Birch & Barley during restaurant week. When we arrived, we were seated right away but then waited 40 minutes for a server to come to our table (and we had to flag someone down). The hostess was serving tables because they were so short staffed. The staff were doing the best they could, but management needs to step up and ensure they have enough staff to be open and functioning during a busy Saturday night. The restaurant week deal was great ($40 + $25 wine pairing), but we ended up there an hour and a half longer than we expected due to the slow service.

Unfortunately, we waited 40 minutes for a server to ask for our drink order. This only happened because I walked around to find someone. I had to do the same thing when we were ready for a second round of drinks AND when we wanted the bill. If the food wasn’t delicious, it would have been an absolute atrocious dinner.

We had not been to B&B for many years. It used to be very popular, with outstanding food and beer expertise, an open kitchen, delicious tasting menu and a line out the door. Well, times have changed. I would call them fancy basic, but certainly not gourmet any longer. The food was abundant, but lacked flavor, showcasing less quality in the ingredients, overly saucy and a basic filler, but nothing to savor or draw you back. The music was very loud. The server brought out the wrong dish for 2 of the courses. The price on the final check was higher than the price on the menu. No sparkling water. Huge dishes full of stockyard meats and pastas with very watery sauces (all cleary from Sysco and not from local farm or slow food). The sauces had funky tastes, clearly not a chef in the kitchen. Speaking of kitchen, I can see why they walled off for former amazing bar seats that peered right into the kitchen. When you pass by to go to bathroom, you see a mess, and be careful the hallway floor is very slick and the bathrooms smell like a moist sauna. To justify my score, the staff was trying very hard to please with what they had to work with. The waitress was sweet and trying very hard; it wasn't her issue the food was bland and the wrong dishes kept coming out. The manager was incredibly nice. As he bent over many tables around us, the first words he spoke to each table were, "I'm sorry..." Poor guy wants to make this place hum...and the front of the house was humming beautifully at every step. I want to ensure this team gets kudos for their work. The back end of the house will likely have this placed closed down within 6 months if they don't make some major changes in food quality, recipes, cleanliness and overall quality. I'm going to be optimistic and hope the owners take note, make changes, and revive this place back to its real status on the DC food map.

This restaurant has declined. The server walked up to the table last night, and without any other greeting demanded ,”you ready?” The rest of the evening followed that standard. Not awful if not stellar by any means.

The Buccatini was a very small portion, and more watery than it was eggy. Almost seems like they forgot to add any salt at all so the flavor was very bland. The Shepards pie however, was vey delicious. Rich flavor, fresh ingredients, and hot out of the oven.

It's nice to have Birch and Barley back and the renovations look great. The menu, though small, has some tasty items. The beet salad and shepherd's pie were well-crafted and offered great flavor. The standout was the salmon which had a perfect combination of elements, textures, and taste, all beautifully presented. The burger, however, was not as lean as one would expect at this type of restaurant, making for a greasy meal for one diner. Call me old fashioned, but I have to say I miss the beer focus from the previous incarnation. The menu offers no suggested beer pairings for the entrees, no beer flights, no chef's menu. And the waiter wasn't very helpful in making selections from the still-impressive list. That's what made the original Birch and Barley so unique, so it's sad to see that part of it is gone.

Lipstick on my wine glass. No vegetarian options in the menu. My colleague asked if the pasta could be made without meat and was told yes. It came with bacon and when he asked if they could do it, the server told him to choose something else “if he didn’t like it”. The food was incredibly underwhelming but the service was abysmal. The server never came back to check on us after bringing food. We had to ask for water several times after going 30+ minutes without water. Very disappointed.

Hi! I am so sorry that we didn't deliver the experience that you and your guests deserved. I also apologize for the fact that we told you that we could make a dish vegetarian but didn't follow through and then gave an unacceptable response. I hope that you give us another opportunity to give you a fantastic experience.

The food was incredible, but definitely skip the wine and cocktails and opt for a beer.

The menu had good selections. I ordered soup and salad and my partner ordered salad and a cheeseburger. Salads came out promptly, but the rest of the food arrived. 50 minutes later. since we had a show to catch, we had to take it to go. Good thing we ordered artisanal bread. It was good and it filled us up enough so that we could get through the show. The wines by the glass list was very limited and expensive. Maybe I have cheap taste, but I have tasted better out of selections from the grocery store. Manager was very apologetic about the time. We might try again when we are less rushed.

They gave our standard seat to someone else and ended up seating us at high bar stools. The seating was uncomfortable, it was a very loud environment, and food took forever to be served. No one even came to check how our food is. We were looking forward to try Birch after reopening but this is such a disappointment.

Food and ambiance were mostly good, but our server really detracted from the overall experience. She was slow to greet the table despite walking by it multiple times, and it was clear that she was not familiar with the menu or the ingredients. She recommended dishes that were no longer on the menu, but worse, she asked if "a little bit of nuts" in a dish would be alright when we advised her of a nut allergy. She also forgot to put in our drink order the first time, and then never asked if we'd like to order any additional drinks once those were completed. The bartender who happened to walk by was kind and observant, and she happily took our drink orders instead. It's a shame to give a non-raving review because I do generally like this restaurant.

Beautiful restaurant! love the ambiance and the music level is perfect. All of the appetizers were delicious and the mains were good. The beer list is incredible, and we loved our wine. Our service was a little lack luster however, which was surprising given the quality of the ambiance and the food. Zero enthusiasm, and didn't have answers for menu related questions, which made navigating the beer list a challenge. I do look forward to a future experience at the Bar.
