Carmella’s Plates & Pints is the first restaurant for co-owners, Carmella Salem and Michael Alberter. Our kitchen creates upscale comfort cuisine.
Our dining room has a warm and cozy feel due to the wood- beamed cathedral ceiling, open fireplace, taxidermy and stained glass windows that adorn the dining room. Our guests feel as though they are tucked away at some destination lodge that exists in the heart of the Historic Southside. Local meats are delivered daily with Wild Game plates on the menu such as our staple plates like the Bison Burger and Smoked Wild Boar Meatballs. We do have an intimate 60 seat dining room and ask that guests please call us for parties of 6 or more to make a reservation. Our expansive Whiskey Bar boasts over 500 Selections. Enjoy 11 Wines on Tap / 27 Craft beers on Tap / 11 Cocktails on Tap.

    I would give them 5 Michelin stars if i could! This place has it all: Incredible food, welcoming & cozy atmosphere, top-rate staff & the most extensive selection of spirits in the city! Had the most wonderful dinner here tonight & last Friday for restaurant week! From each member of the staff, to each item on the menu, everything’s top-notch! I dream of some of these menu items! I recommend making reservations but coming early to grab a drink at their absolutely beautiful bar! Bartenders John and Kailin were awesome! They were incredibly fast, friendly and know what they’re doing behind the bar. I only had to describe roughly what I was craving and Kailin was spot on. A girl at the bar had recommended an Orin Swift red blend (8 Years in the Desert) and I think it’s my new favorite wine! I recommend the scallops & shrimp brûlée mac & cheese! Absolutely flawless. 👌🏽 The wait staff are also exceptional. Tabitha and Anna are two of the best servers in the city. The restaurant week shepherd’s pie ravioli was incredible! A dinner here can be a whole experience. I strongly recommend for a group to check out the round fireplace table in the wintertime! It’s one of my favorite places to be on the planet! Every single piece of the decor is perfectly selected to bring together this warm, rustic, classic-era feeling. They easily have the largest selection of whiskey, bourbon & tequila imaginable, awesome infused vodkas (strongly recommend the strawberry!), craft cocktails and a truly exceptional wine list that includes wine on tap, so there’s never a bad glass! Hands down the best all around restaurant in Pittsburgh!

    Carmella’s is a great place to go … Restaurant Week or otherwise. My husband and I have eaten there many times, during both Restaurant Weeks and for dinner / drinks at other times during the year. We have never been disappointed. Even if just looking for a place to come for drinks, you can’t possibly be disappointed. I don’t think there is another bar in Pittsburgh that has a wider selection and also the bartending expertise and ambiance as Carmella’s. It’s a really good place to come for a great cocktail, a good glass of wine or a shot of the huge selection of outstanding bourbons, gins, tequilas, etc. Dinner there is always a good choice too … the service has always been great, the ambiance cozy and the food always different … and very good! For this reservation it was Restaurant Week. I had the scallops appetizer and my husband had the mushroom croquette. Both were excellent (yes, we shared). For dinner, we both got the Shepard’s Pie Raviolo because we love a good lamb dish, and we were really pleased with the meal. We go to Carmella’s because we like a menu that is different from what I can make at home. We eat out quite a bit, and love Restaurant Week because it allows us to try interesting and different food at a reasonable cost. The portions during these weeks are just enough (3 courses!); we usually have to take food home during regular weeks because the servings are just too much for one person to eat. The difference between choosing Carmella’s over many of the other restaurants we have tried during Restaurant Week is that the food is REALLY good. We have been very disappointed at what some of the other restaurants serve during these weeks. Carmellla’s obviously wants their customers to come back, and we will!

    It all looks good on paper, but after giving this restaurant several chances, I can say with confidence that I have never had a good meal here. I love the bar and the dining room. The atmosphere is great. They have a huge menu and beverage selection. The food just isn't very good. In observation, they are trying really hard to be a high-end restaurant, touting a head chef and creative dishes. They fall short in execution though. For example, the wagyu burger that they make in-house seems like an awesome dish, but the burger itself has sinewy pieces of beef in the ground meat. Another example, the Veal Meatball, while the flavor was good, was small and loaded with filler. That dish came paired with house made pasta that was doughy and dense, while the sauce had a sour taste and was basically canned tomatoes with salt, pepper and garlic. The service was slow and getting things like drinks and utensils didn't keep pace with the coursing. This was hard to understand, because they had enough staff on the floor, but they weren't really working together. I believe that Carmella's could be a great restaurant. The dining room is surprise for being on E Carson St. It's a beautiful tavern room, but you can tell that the design and care for the space is behind the curve. For example, beautiful exposed beams throughout the ceiling with visible dust and pine swag from last Christmas hanging in the middle of August. Unique fabric booth dividers, with uncomfortable chairs and awkwardly sized tables. A fire place feature in the middle of the room that looks really cool, but has an awkward circular bar around it that would be uncomfortable to dine at. These are little things that make a big difference. All-in-all, I think Carmella's is two-steps shy of being a great restaurant. In the handful of times I've dined there I have been consistently disappointed. I hope that they step it up. It could be a great place for fine dining if they put in a little more effort.

    We came for Restaurant Week - have been here before and enjoyed it. I have no complaints about the QUALITY of the food - VERY GOOD. The QUANTITY was another matter. Both my wife and I left hungry. For the price charged it simply wasn't enough food. And the two dishes we had- bouillabaisse and Shepherds raviolo - were not highly inspired. I'll come back for a reasonably priced burger.

    Carmella’s never disappoints !!! Every time I go, I leave very satisfied with the food, drink and service! This recent visit during resturaunt week was exceptional with special offerings on the menu. Living in Greece for 20 years, I consider myself a snob with lamb dishes, and the Shepherd’s Raviolo with Braised Lamb, Farmer’s Cheese, and egg yolk was perfectly prepared ! With the help of the staff, we paired each course with a cocktail or wine from an extensive list (with great prices). I highly recommend.

    Carmella has assembled an amazing crew; the service is always top notch! The atmosphere in the bar area is lively, while the restaurant is cozy and romantic. It's nice to have an upscale, mature bar and restaurant on Carson Street. The food menu is creative and the quality is exceptional. The drink menu features a variety of house cocktails and infused elixirs. I love the whiskey sour and the espresso martini. Plus Carmella's has the largest selection of liquor I've ever seen.

    Wait staff was amazing-kind-relaiable and truly enjoyed their job. The food was fresh- the Bay Scallop Linguine and Roasted Chicken dish were both amazing. Great food, drinks and atmosphere.

    What a great dinner. Food and drinks were excellent, and the staff is just the best. They even sang Happy Birthday to me when they brought out my chocolate mousse. Wish I would have taken pictures to share.

    Excellent food and service. The whiskey inventory is the best I have seen in the Pittsburgh area. Haven’t visited since the pandemic and plan to return soon. Highly recommend.

    We went for brunch on Sunday at noon with another couple. Our wives had mimosas and Limoncello spritzes and we husbands had hazy IPAs from their excellent draft list, all of which were very good. I had the frittata, my wife had the breakfast sandwich, and the other couple had the omelette of the day and the chicken and biscuits. They were all ample sized and cooked to perfection. The atmosphere was cozy and quiet despite there being few tables open. We had a great time and will look forward to coming back again.

    We used to live in the South Side and Carmella’s was our spot!! We came back to Pittsburgh for the weekend and Ben instantly remembered us! The food and drinks were fantastic and delicious as usual, but Ben is one of the best servers we have ever had. He is so kind and charming, made us feel right at home again! The new menu is delicious!! We can’t wait to come back and visit in a few months again. Thank you so much for having us!!

    We had Easter dinner here. Everyone we had contact with was so nice & friendly. Our server knew the menu well even though it was a special menu for the day. The atmosphere great, the music playing was perfect but not too loud for conversations and the food, the food was fantastic! Our choices included 2 had the lasagna, 1 the rib eye and 1 the lamb shank. All delicious but the lamb shank won for over all best! I can't wait to go back and order from the regular menu! Oh, they gave the option to tip the kitchen! We thought that was amazing since they also gave up their holiday to be there for the guests!

    I really wanted to love this place. I came for brunch and the food was just….Meh. Nothing to write to yelp about. The service was excellent and the place looks like a lodge restaurant in Switzerland. Its quirky and fun.

    The place was busy for a Saturday night and I was excited that I was able to get a reservation so late (booked on Friday). I had the wild mushroom risotto and it was delicious. My friend had the risotto Nero which had calamari, mussels shrimp and lobster. It was served with squid ink. She loved every bite. All in all a wonderful meal and I look forward to returning.

    Beautiful bar and interesting overall ambiance. Extensive alcohol menu. Our drinks were excellent. The Wagyu Bolognese was very good. The risotto was very good as well. However, the chicken showed up separate from the risotto not incorporated into the entree which was a surprise and a little disappointing.

    Very friendly place... Ben, our waiter was beyond friendly and helpful -- even gave us some free biscuits and frittata at the end of the Brunch! Have been to this place before and will go again and again.

    It pains me to write this, as I’ve been to Carmella’s for brunch several times and it was on of my fav spots. I was excited to try it for dinner - but was disappointed in the food. It was so bland, it was like there was no seasoning whatsoever on anything. Appetizers, entrees, same issue. Drinks were good, and the service was good as well.

    Went in on a random date night. Service and atmosphere were great. The drinks were also very good. However, the food was extremely bland. It is definitely not worth the price. You can get a lot better food at the same or lower price in the area. Would go back for drinks, not for food.

    Very cozy but eclectic. The food was special for Pittsburgh Restaurant week but absolutely delicious, quite a few choices. The Pastiscio and Shepherds pie were great choices and made with lamb. Ben and Tanya,our servers were very knowledgeable and attentive. It was a great evening and we plan to return. Carmella’s was a find thanks to Restaurant Week.
