Beautiful interior, outstanding quality. Open kitchen is always cool too. But you need to be prepared to pay 400 USD for a steak to share with 5 people. On the higher end, even if it was very good. Well, I guess you pay also for the great design. Congratulations on that.
Every thing we are and drank was fantastic. Aaron and Maryellen were wonderful. The only knock is that we had a reservation for 2 @ 8:45, and we were not seated until
After 9:15, and only after we inquired. We had the tasting menu, so we were eating until after 11:30.
Gwen was both delicious and fantastic. The waiters are knowledgeable in regards to the ingredients and very kind. The 80 day aged ribeye was absolutely mouth watering. It is a fantastic place and made my date night memorable.
Five course Taste of Gwen menu with generous portions especially with 12oz N.Y. Steak. Wonderful scallop dish. Nice ambiance that was busy but not too much so. Very attentive enthusiastic welcoming service. After watching the energetic cook staff prepare the meals, you’ll be tempted to try them all. Enticing butchery display upfront near the entrance.
This restaurant has amazing food, excellent service and great atmosphere each time we been there. Friends of ours introduced this place for our anniversary and we love it since. But we stop this past Friday and we were a little disappointed. Great food and service like always but it appears to us that they have a new bartender? The cocktails we order were horrible! It felt like I was drinking Water instead of a Manhattan, same for my husband. I try his and same effect. I decided to have wine instead, to see if I get better results to find out wine was not great either. I could tell this wine is been open for awhile. Quite frankly it was disappointing for a $38 dollar glass of wine. Again the food and service are great but the cocktails they need to step up to the great label of there food and service.
I think I'm being fair by saying it was good not great. I think our steak was solid but not great. Essentially I have had equal or better for less cost several times over.
Excellent service and sommeliers. The dining room is beautiful. I must admit, I was expecting a lot given how highly recommended this restaurant was, and we didn't come away from the meal feeling like it was a "must" or that it was particularly memorable. The lamb appetizer was amazing but nothing else stood out. No interesting flavor combinations, textures etc... We've had better meals in LA at less spendy restaurants.
Somemlier was beyond rude. The Wagu upgrade was extortionate and we were not told of the price when it was offered. Walked away with an additional US$185 increase thanks to the Wagu beef option. They also add on their own tip - which ended up being US$90 for a meal for 2 people! Food was fantastic - but staff need lessons in customer service.
Service is awful.
Server and host were both incredibly rude, patronizing and unhelpful--to the point where we did not have enough water glasses or silverware to eat and drink and had to assist in clearing our own plates when our entrees arrived. It was 5:30pm on a Monday and the restaurant was empty. We were there with a well-behaved child who is very accustomed to eating in restaurants. There clearly lad no interest in serving him or us. It was my husband's birthday dinner and they ruined the evening.
We were excited to dine at Gwen. The service was horrendous. Our food was served to only a portion of us at a time. We had to wait for other portions. Our main course came out to only 3 of us. There were 4 of us. The meat tasted great but was Luke warm. The sides came out after we finished and our friend never got his meal. The corkage was $50.00. Obsurd!!!! The wine was stored in the hallway and I had to ask over and over to pour more. When we were leaving the waiter came up to my friend and I and said “ he was wrong but might lose his job”!!! We had to pay $160 per couple for a horrible ding experience. They wouldn’t even waive corkage fee.
We had a great meal Saturday night. Delicious food. Creative wine list. Impeccable and friendly service. Steak, fish, beets and carrots were all delicious, as were our raw starters of ceviche and steak tartare. But would it kill them to add a green vegetable to the menu?
We enjoyed our first dining experience at Gwen. The wait staff was friendly and attentive and the food was outstanding. Probably the best new york steak we have had to-date. We hope to come back soon.
Waited 30 minutes without an update from the hostess despite making a reservation. I understand sometimes the schedule can fall behind or a party stays longer than anticipated, but acknowledging the wait, giving an update, and apologizing afterwards would be much appreciated.
Once seated, the service was good. The interior design was beautiful. The expected meat-centric menu with use of high quality ingredients, was good however there were no unique dishes or any standout dish, except for the bread, that bread was delicious. For the price point, I expected more out of the food.
Oh man the food is amazing from start to finish! The bread is soooooo divine!!! Salty, crunchy and chewy. The lamb ribs were delicious and fatty, the yogurt was delicious with it. Salad complex menagerie of flavors. And then the piece de resistance - the bone in ribeye, not the Wagyu, was SO delicious. Cooked medium rare perfection and you get to select you steak knife :-) even the coffee was delicious! Definitely will be going back!
Food was great. Steak was excellent. Lobster roll and bread were great . Service was trash especially for the price . They include the tip in the bill so it doesn’t matter if they give good service or not .
My wife & I went to Gwen at the recommendation of my parents, who ate there on September 1st or 2nd.
We sat at the chef's counter, which we highly recommend for twosomes or threesomes. It was lovely and quiet and terrific to watch how meticulously each dish is prepared. The chef's counter seats were also surprisingly comfortable.
The restaurant is gorgeous. We loved the art-deco meets 1970's mash-up of decor.
Overall, Gwen struck us as a bit over-priced but we are glad we went. Would we return? Probably not. We did not think the cost encouraged repeating the experience we received (over $300 for 2 people and only 2 drinks).
If you have the spare funds, it is a lovely place.
Food was excellent. Staff was so friendly and professional. Great experience
first time here, the ceviche is one of the best i've had, and i am from south America so i know my ceviche. the bread is tasty and perfect in consistency. the wagu steak delicious.
We did the tasting menu, which was very well done! We loved the food and explanations. The biggest problem is it is very loud and hard to hear others at your table.
Food and service were great. I would definitely eat here again when I'm in the area. We had a 200 filet that was simply amazing.
Really outstanding with excellent service. A little pricey.
The food was good
But service was mediocre hence it made the ambiance and everything else mediocre
One of the finest dining experiences in LA. The staff is informed, engaged, and excited. The food is top notch and the cocktail/wine selection are exceptional.
Outstanding service when we sat at the chef’s counter for dinner. Everything on the tasting menu was top notch! The Sea bream was cooked perfectly, as was the strip steak (you also get to choose your own antique steak knife, each with their own unique back story). Duck fat potatoes were decadent but the squash with charred leek yogurt was one of my favorite dishes of the night. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a great meal with service to match.
One of my best culinary experience. Had a great evening for my husband birthday. I recommend the rib eye, worth the hour wait. Meat lovers you won’t be disappointed!
Great experience from beginning to end
I would have given 5 stars across the board but I asked for wine recommendations to pair with my food and they were great but when I got the bill I was shocked that the Australian Pinot was $35 a glass. It retails for $29 a bottle. Otherwise a great meal.
I eat out 5 times a week and found Gwen Seriously overpriced, with a slightly curt attitude from the waiting staff thrown in for good measure.
I thought the staff might be doing me a favour to let me dine there.
Great, if not the best steak ever. Delicious scallops. Shame.
With less surly service - even a goodbye would have been nice - and slightly less expensive food and wine menus, I’d make Gwen one of my favourites.
Not a place for everyday dining for most, but great for special occasions, especially for food and wine aficionados. The selections on the tasting menu are exquisite, as are the wine pairings via the sommelier.
Best kept secret is the lunch menu. Why is this being kept such a secret?
Great food. Great service! Would recommend to friends.
Ive been to Gwen twice.
First experience (two months ago) everything was amazing and I thought I had found a true top tier restaurant in LA
Second experience (two nights ago): service was nowhere near where it was before. Waiter kept forgetting things. Food was not even close to as well prepared. It’s as if the kitchen lost its head chef and was scrambling to maintain order. On top of that, the food made me very sick. My stomach still hasn’t settled down. I am so sad that this restaurant has gone downhill so fast.
Stunning room, casual and welcoming. Exquisite charcuterie, great cocktails. Do not miss the agnolotti pasta - one of the best I've tasted. And the hangar steak is a stand-out. Bonus: best bread ever. The Gwen Tasting Menu is great value and each dish totally delicious.
Service was not nearly what it should have been for the price point and owner’s aspirations.
This is a serious experience....Curtis Stone and his team have created something along the line of Thomas Keller restaurants or an episode of Chef’s Table. The service with Amanda was exceptional.
Delicious Food, steak prepared perfectly, oysters, salad & the carrots were fresh & tasty. Service was below average. The waiter did not tell us our steak would take an hour to cook until after we ordered a particular cut. We decided to change our steak preference as it was too long of a wait. I have been to many exceptional steak houses & never waited more then 30 minutes. I had to ask for more water a few times, our finished plates were not picked up in a timely manner. The wait staff was friendly & knowledgable of the menu but service was lacking.
This was a great tasting experience ! I'm a big fan of Curtis Stone and watch his show. I was in LA visiting from Chicago and was eager to try a tasting menu! I picked Gwen and was so delighted. I had a great dining experience from the vibrant taste, excellent service and friendly welcome from Luke Stone. I love the preparation of the steaks - the smoke really penetrates through and enhances the flavor of the beef. The tasting menu was an excellent way to try some of the most popular dishes. Picking out your own personal knife really personalizes the experience. I hate those steak houses that give you a machete for a knife ! A big thumbs up for the brothers from down under ! Great work !
Fabulous evening with beautiful food. Great service and the staff really cared. Just wish the Australian dollar got you more.
The service was impeccable- as was the food. There were four of us there so we shared several appetizers, as well as sides. We each ordered our own entree but ended up sharing those as well. From the lamb ribs to the roasted carrots to the peach cobbler, you can’t go wrong with anything on their menu. The overall experience at Gwen surpassed that of several other top tier Los Angeles restaurants. It was fully worth the price!
