The Union Oyster House, located on the Freedom Trail, near Faneuil Hall, enjoys the unique distinction of being America's oldest restaurant. This Boston fixture, housed in a building dating back to Pre-Revolutionary days, started serving food in 1826 and has continued ever since with the stalls and oyster bar, where Daniel Webster was a constant customer, in their original positions.

Went with high hopes of dinner with friends for our last night in Boston. Hostess seemed to be annoyed we were there. The clam chowder barley had any clams. Lobster ravioli was gummy and lacking lobster. If your wanting fried food it’s decent. But we can say we were at the 2nd oldest restaurant in the US and home of Clam Chowder.

We had a great time. Our server, Justice, was awesome. He was attentive without being disruptive. He was knowledgeable, friendly and funny. The restaurant was fun and crowded which added to the ambience. And of course the historical connection was really cool. But pricing was a bit steep for value of the food. Food was really good just not a 5star meal.

We ate at the counter where we could see them shucking oysters. The chowder was delicious as were our fresh oysters. Folks around the counter were friendly and chatty. Great and memorable experience!

Clam chowder had little to no clams mostly potatoes. Place was not busy and they never brought our oysters. It is not worth the hype of being the oldest restaurant. Have been there three times with similar bad experience. We will not return. Don’t waste your money and time. Waiter was pleasant but that is the only positive.

What a disappointment! Started with oysters. Bits of shell throughout oysters. No fork provided so used dinner fork. When clearing plate waitress put dirty fork with sauce back on placemat to use for dinner. Scrod was lukewarm. Extra lemon requested not received. Carrots cool and hard. Lobster ravioli bland. I get that it’s a tourist trap but no excuse.

Great oysters - Hal shell and fried! The hot lobster roll was pricey at $41 with fries. Service was excellent and very attentive! It’s a need to stop in Boston, sit at the bar and watch them shuck or sit upstairs in Booth 18 where JFK sat for Sunday dinner.

Worth the visit! We LOVE this historic building and the interior as the oldest restaurant in the USA! Take time to “read the walls” that were on the Freedom Trail. All loaded with wonderful photos and memorabilia! Agree with another reviewer - go for lunch or cocktails & bar menu. Dinner was sadly ordinary. When a signature Boston Clam Chowder had good flavor, but was barely warm - that’s just wrong. Understaffed, but pleasant server, so we just didn’t wait to get it replaced. Baked clams looked pre-made/frozen(?) and were way overcooked ( they took it off the bill, thanks to our lovely server). Crab cakes were totally forgettable. French fries came AFTER we were done, but they were quite good. My next observation may sound minor, but can make/break the feel of any space…WHAT was somebody thinking when they replaced “some” of the light bulbs with modern “harsh color blue-white LEDs” mixed with mostly warm light in this historic, friendly space?! …Simple enough to find “warm white” LEDS! Suggest this VERY inexpensive FIX that should depend upon a good Manager. Seems “the current family”, who has owned the restaurant for over 50 years, needs to visit with a critical eye to make this historic gem shine, again. Still… just go!!! Then walk across the alley to The Bell And Hand - the oldest pub! “Quaff an ale” with ghosts of our country’s young and feisty past. (Have fun! It’s just food.)

Our server was fantastic! Extremely friendly and helpful. Food came out in a timely manner. The history of the restaurant is amazing. We were put in a very small booth behind a pole so that was my only complaint. We were stuffed after the clam chowder and our entrees, we wish we could have tried their dessert! A must go when visiting Boston!

If you like really good, fried, fresh New England seafood, you will be in heaven. Excellent fried seafood combination platter. Seafood, fries and onion rings stayed crispy to the last piece. Raw cherrystone clams were exceptional. We could have eaten two dozen each. So good, that we took company back for round two the next day. Waitress was very gracious.

Honestly, nothing… we left extremely disappointed. For the money… long John silvers is better for 1/4 the price. I’m shocked with the quality of the seafood they served us tonight. Everything was frozen. No way possible it was fresh. The clam chowder was no doubt, from a bag. There was (no exaggeration here) ZERO clam, in the CLAM CHOWDER!!! It was lukewarm, and well, practically flavorless. The seafood platter was the biggest joke and let down of the evening. Definitely frozen. Flavorless. The onion rings were barely breaded and extremely greasy. The fish was thinner than or equal to a hard back book cover. God forbid they give you an actual thick filet. Nope. The fries were good… but greasy. The Diet Coke taste like Pepsi. Funny, the price or list of sodas is not on the menu. I wonder if that’s so they can buy what’s cheapest at Walmart, and hopes the customer’s not hip to it. I DEFINITELY know the different between coke and Pepsi. Anyways, the history was cool. The service was nothing to write home about. I think the waitress was stoned. The guy that greeted us at the door was kinda rude and just pointed where to go when I said we had a reservation. I definitely would not recommend this place. Oh, lastly. The tap or lines from the kegs seriously need to be replaced or flushed out clean. The beer taste sour. It’s a super sad day when Bostons Fish House in Orlando Florida destroys the oldest restaurant in the US.
