What Insiders Are Saying
A old-school-meets-new-school diner in Chinatown.
Food was very good, portion really smaller than most, guess that's why prices seemed reasonable? My husband and I normally share dishes, they were really meant for one person. Ex: 3 mini meatballs when most places offer 4 at least for the same price? We'd go back again but will not think of it as a $ but rather at $$ to be more accurate (according to Trip Advisor rating).
The crispy chicken sandwich is excellent and I love the booths.
Came here for an early Saturday brunch date. Wonderful service, wonderful food. I’m always skeptical of gentrified versions of local flavor - and this “upscale diner” definitely falls in that category. But my local heart can’t help itself. The food was great, all the service was prompt and super friendly, and for a Manhattan restaurant - especially in this neighborhood - SO spacious. That last one especially will bring me back again for sure! (The music choices were also on point.)
Order salmon and cod fish
Took 40minutes for food to arrive
Salmon and side dish mushrooms was cold
Cod fish taste about going bad
Plates were cold
Place not even half full
Waiter took off salmon from bill
Pass on going back
Weekend brunch is good.
So stay away from dinner!
Delicious & fun
The food was outstanding. Our server was terrific. Great place
Great service esp from Adam K
Came because of good reviews. Server neglected to inform us that many of the items offered were no longer available. Burger ordered well done came out rare. Sent it back and 20 minutes later came out rare again. Wound up only eating the fries and they didn’t want to take the burger off the check
Modern diner feel with plenty of vegetarian options. Food was good but nothing special. Relatively inexpensive sit-down brunch for SOHO.
Food was OK, nothing spectacular. The Lemon Ricotta pancakes were bland, and lacked both texture and flavor. The parmesan french fries came in a basket with a single pinch of cheese on top, leaving the remaining fries at the bottom naked. Food immediately came out after it was ordered (less than 10 minutes), after we asked the server to space out the courses. One of the guests was very late, and the hostess asked us several times when our guest would be arriving. This seems fair if the restaurant was packed and/or had a wait, but it had neither. The place was half empty. Nobody was waiting. We were even asked if our friend would "even show up". After our friend did arrive and our food (which was sent back to sit in the window, to avoid getting cold) was eaten, the check was nearly immediately brought out. There's a fine line between turning tables efficiently, and rushing people out, and ruining their experience.
Food and service were excellent but decor has gone a bit shabby.
Great place to go near Chinatown. Quick and easy and not crazy expensive. Loved the Chicken & Biscuits! and that they open early. Many places near Chinatown open later on weekends.
Service was unreasonably slow and food is just okay—nothing special and overpriced.
Food tasted good but it was served cold. Chilled Eggs Benedict is not terribly appetizing. They must have left it out for awhile as our meal was a bit of a wait. Breakfast is usually pretty quick. Another part of our order was also incorrect. And the table next to us ordered bagels but were delivered a plate of bacon.
Made us wait 25 minutes past reservation time before seating us. Tiny portions, high prices. Food okay. Service almost insultingly bad. Had to literally get up to go to the bar to ask for more coffee after all waiters averting eye contact for twenty minutes.
Everything was great! Food was simple and comforting for a Sunday breaky. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because the breakfast sandwich came on a plain kaiser roll when I was hoping for the poppy seed :)
Our kids loved their birthday breakfast - and we appreciated the excellent service and the yummy food!
The food was very average, not original; the service below par; the ambience unpleasant, music way too loud. I shall never return.
Absolutely loved this place!! Highly recommended’n
Interesting to see this mid-century, American diner in a Chinatown building. Very nice decor inside. Most tables are booths, so very comfortable seating. Little cafe nook in the very front near hostess stand. Didn't get to get a drink, but bartenders look like they know what they're doing and would definitely try their cocktails next time. Overall, a slow Saturday night for this little restaurant. Doesn't seem like it gets very busy.
Came during Restaurant Week, but ended up ordering from the normal menu. Salmon chowder was very good, but maybe too much potato. Mushroom bruschetta with a quail egg was delicious, and I don't like mushrooms. Hanger steak salad was good. Everything was super flavourful and impressive. I hate dull tasting steaks, and my rib eye was incredible. The food was so flavourful it got kind of heavy/salty towards the end, so I couldn't finish.
Would definitely try desserts next time, but I was too full. Service was nice. Even the guy bussing our table was very friendly (and cute).
This is not exactly a classic diner (it's too modern) but retains the spirit. Excellent food in a very pleasant setting.
This restaurant has very good food, often taking a special twist on typical diner food to bring it a class up.
I had the cashew bowl which was absolutely delicious. Want to go back just for that!
Great night out. Food was excellent, impeccable service. We had the fixed menu and everything was delicious.
Our lunch was delicious, very cool decor. Would definitely return!
Everything was perfect, thank you :)
I've been here twice in the last month. Great cocktails and creative and tasty bar food, plus a lovely, delicious dinner menu. We had a GF vegetarian, a vegetarian and two omnivores in our party and we all loved our food. The waiter and bartender were both great as well. I wish more people knew about Nickle and Diner!
Sunday brunch was good
Good menu; great food; fun ambiance. I'll definitely be back.
The food and service was very good, although the prices for food are high (but this is in NYC general the case)
Great menu. We could have ordered everything but chose sliders: a good choice.
Fairly quiet at 11:30 on a Wednesday but an hour later every table was taken and very noisy.
A plus for the neighborhood.
The food was delicious, had the hanger steak salad and really enjoyed it.
Great and versatile ambience. Top notch service, high end plating and very balanced flavors. Don't miss the seasonal drinks; it's clear how much care is put into experimenting with flavor profiles.
Love u guys
Service was really bad: we received the “sides” after we had finished the mains. The dessert arrives before the sides... we had to ask twice for every single thing (coffee, sides, hot chocolate...).
Had Sunday brunch with adult children, overall great experience! Staff was very friendly and food was amazing! Make sure you have the classic egg sandwich, yolk oozes out of big poppy seed Kaiser roll with smoked bacon and ham. Best ever!
Food overall was just OK. Service was subpar. They kept coming around and tried to take away our food and clear the table. It seemed like they were trying to rush us to leave (we didn't even sit there for an hour yet). There was no line up at the door so that was weird.
Service was great! They gave us our own room and we were able to play our own music! Would definitely go again :)
Absolutely amazing! Waiter was such a great, fun person too
