The Blue Room - Permanently Closed

Contemporary American
The Blue Room is simple casual comfort. Housed in a renovated woven hose factory, this nationally acclaimed restaurant is composed of bare wood beams, brick and granite walls, cozy suede banquettes, soft lighting and zinc-topped tables. Chef Joe Guarino makes good use of the wood-burning grill to work creating dishes that are both hearty and wholesome. Along with the lively atmosphere comes an interesting, eclectic and affordable wine list. Stop in on Sunday nights for "Retail Wine" night, where 40 or so wines are offered at retail prices. Good & Friendly since 1991.

My husband has a dairy allergy and we always struggle to find places that truly know what that means. Our waiter was fabulous. He was knowledgeable and accommodating and the cook even made up a replacement side that suited our restrictions. I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone looking for a nice date night.

I am someone that usually always has leftovers because portion sizes are usually too big at restaurants for me. I got the restaurant week special here and everything was good except my main course...it was tiny, like tiny tiny, so I was still hungry after with one other person we had paid $140 (including tip and 3 drinks). I got this mussel/clam/chorizo thing which was supposed to have potatoes in it. It had approximately a tablespoon of a potato in it, the stew was more like broth with several mussels and clams in it. It wasn't bad but I just don't think this should be a main dish, it was like a very light app or a snack.

Thoroughly enjoyed the menu and the experience. Waitstaff were attentive but respectful. Appetizers were eclectic and fun. Watermelon salad to goat cheese on toast. Mackerel was awesome! Trifle was really good, as was the fresh fruit pastry. Loved the use of local produce in the repertoire. The decor is loft/mechanical, which is okay, to my taste, but meh. The chairs and layout are very comfortable, which means a lot to my long frame. But i go out with friends to eat well and be able to converse. At the Blue Room we ate very well indeed and had a great time.

The Blue Room used to be one of our favorites - when I worked in Cambridge many years ago we used to go there for lunch - they had the best fusion style lunches around and I still remember the delicious noodle dish they served. And we loved their Sunday brunch. But we had not been there for a long while. We went there this time with some friends on one of the Boston restaurant days. It was a Monday so the restaurant was not too busy and it was quiet. 3 out of the 4 of us had the beef short ribs appetizer, the pork shoulder entrée, and the mixed berry crisp dessert. The short ribs were tasty and came with a healthy portion. The pork shoulder was also good, but nothing that special. The dessert was outstanding. The service was very good - friendly, efficient, attentive. We enjoyed a good dinner and evening. I wish Blue Room can be a bit more creative with its food and be not just good.

The food was average enough, but it took us a whole three hours to finish this dinner. It seemed like each of the few staff that it had had it's own idea of who ordered what, making for a discombobulated dinner. And, when food and service came, came at a snail's pace; they didn't have enough servers per head, and the house did not communicate well enough for a cohesive dinner. Having the bartender also act as our waitress even though we were not seated at the bar was awkward. And to reorder drinks one of our guests had to physically walk to the bar and order the drink for the table. For the food itself, entrees came one at a time rather than together, making our other guests wait. Overall, the food was average, but the service was friendly, but terrible.

We enjoyed sitting outside in early evening on their lower patio. The wines were fine. The only issue we had with the food was the second appetizer - a "pizza" - mislabeled. It was a pretty bad flatbread with very little taste. Avoid the pizzas. If you want pizza go to Area Four on Main St.

Have frequented Blue Room very many times over the years and found this time to not be up to the standards we have come to expect….The service was terrible for an early dinner on a Monday evening when the place was near empty….Server was inattentive, had to ask several times for bread & then brought 4 small slices and one little pat of butter for 4 people to share. Had to ask again of course. Before the main course was served she disappeared and we were entreated to 2 different waitstaff asking if everything was alright. Turns out our server was told to go home as it was not busy & this was her first week at the job The braised chicken was flavorful but it was to have 2 different chicken parts prepared differently…. we received only the thigh…Shallot was difficult to eat as the long stem could not be cut even with the sharp knife ….Three appetizers were fine once we finally got them….. octopus in couscous, grilled asparagus and steak. We asked if the ownership had changed---it did not

The Blue Room was once a real gem when Jorge Lopes was in charge of the kitchen. That was just a few years ago. Today, after having gone back a few times, one can no longer hope for anything special. Our last experience there was disappointing in every way. The food was super average, even our overpriced Rib Eye steak ($ 36) was of average quality and presentation. The Vegetable dish ($ 19) was really flat and boring. The ice cream for dessert also of really low quality. The service was polite but uninspired, flat again. Expectation is the problem here, maybe to a first time goer, the restaurant is still a fine experience but to us who knew the place when every waiter was well trained and could go over every detail of the menu or when every dish was brilliantly prepared, dining today at the Blue Room is just an average experience. Even the host let me move the table which was too close to the kitchen to accommodate the 5 of us and never offered to take our coats, something that in the past would have never happened. The bread is still quite good and the overall ambiance is also still fine. This last experience was the fourth time we had a disappointing experience there. Nothing truly horrible to the point where you send things back to.the kitchen but not a single dish worth talking about or raving about. I would not recommend this place anymore except to someone trying to grab a bite before going to the movies around the corner.

Been going to Blue Room for many years...It has become my dinner before movie favorite. I tend to select salad, wine and several appetizers. perhaps a desert! Several weeks ago I had a roasted beet salad with walnuts YUM YUM YUM, but it was not on the menu last night, but I spotted baby roasted carrots and OMG! Another home run...so incredibly delicious! selected a their pizza another YUM! Dry Creek Valley Zinfindel and had a foodie heaven time! BR waitstaff is the best and Gwyneth Paltrow would die for one of their new aprons! BR always very good and sometimes superior...last night SUPERIOR!

The Blue Room, once a standout, had been uneven of late. We've had very good meals, and indifferent ones. Sadly, the last one was one of the indifferent -- food was OK, but not special. Service was pretty much all over the place. We hope they get the act together on a more steady basis: the place belongs among our longstanding favorites, and we'd love to see it keep its luster.

It was restaurant week, so the combo price for appetizer, main course, and desert was very good. Staff were attentive and helpful. The food was delicious and out of the ordinary. Staff also asked if we were going to the movies nearby and made sure we were out on time. Ambiance very conducive to conversation. A very enjoyable meal. The Blue Room is a favorite spot.

We went for restaurant week and the food was very good. The service was a little weird because you didn't have just one waiter/waitress. Every person on the staff came to your table, so as much as it was nice, it was also confusing on who to ask if you needed something, say another drink. We sat by the bar, which was much louder due to a crowd, but the bartender also disappeared for a while because she was helping with the tables. I've never seen a dynamic like that. Good service, just an odd system.

Iggy's* bread and perfect butter- we needn't say more but we will. We started with generously portioned appetizers: delicious spinach salad with roasted petite squash, pepitas, and "watermelon" colored razor sliced radishes and a pasta with a collection of the most miniature delightful mushrooms--yum! Followed with the seared duck breast and hangar steak--just what was needed on particularly frigid New England winter evening right before catching a movie! Did we mention the Iggy's bread and flavorful butter to start? *one of the first places we tried this amazing bread many, many years ago before places like Whole Food carried it

I love the atmosphere on the Blue Room but for a $28.00 entree I expect very good quality cooking & service. Our waitress could nor explain the difference between flank & hangar steak. The flank steak was over-salty and undercooked (I had asked for medium) though my friend liked his hangar steak The knife they provided could not get through the gristle on mine. Salad & veg were very nice but given the prices I will probably will go elsewhere next time.

Uncomfortable! Tables too close together. Flimsy plastic chairs were hard to move & uncomfortable. Baseboard heating blasting next to our table made it feel like a sauna. Terrible track lights pointed right into our eyes. Up-tempo pop music being played so loud that conversation was nearly impossible. People don't go to restaurants to dance, they go to talk to each other. So why are so many American restaurants impossibly loud? Food: The duck breast and skirt steak were well cooked but they cried out for potatoes of some kind, of which there were none, not anywhere, it turns out, on the menu. Which wouldn't have been bad if there had been a healthy serving of other veggies on the plate. But veggies had merely a token roll on these plates, something to dress up the meat. And finally, the coup de grace, just as we were chewing our last mouthful, the bus-person swoops in to whip our plates out from under our noses, without so much as even the dreaded "Are you still working on that?"

We were the second group in the restaurant and service was a little too "laid back", drinks too a long time to get to the table. Food was good. Hanger steak was cooked perfectly, a very rare thing in any restaurant and they did fantastic there. They don't really have a good set of appetizers for people to share. Cocktails were great, but slow to arrive in a nearly empty restaurant. Wine selections were excellent. Too bad it was underwhelming .

We have enjoyed the Blue Room on a number of occasions after a nearby event. The food is always superb. This time, however, the food delivery was spotty---one of our party had to wait so long that the rest of us were well into our meals before his was served. I think this was a kitchen problem. However, the waitstaff was extremely friendly and accommodating in every other way.

Been here several times. Were going to the movie theater and told the waiter so. The food was very slow in coming--so much so that we had to ask for it a couple of times and when we finally got it, it was not hot and we had to rush through it so we would not be late to the movie. Not sure we would go back any time soon.

Food was great. I loved their octopus appetizer. We ordered several desserts and we were told that the whole desserts were on them because their ice cream that was supposed to be on top of the desserts we ordered was not perfect. I was really impressed that they are such a perfectionist with their food!!
