About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Romantic
  • Innovative
We are located on Hingham's historic Main Street in a 250-year old colonial house that has been thoroughly restored and updated by the award-winning Niemitz Design Group. Our cuisine, led by Executive Chef Stephen Sherman, centers around great steaks and the freshest seafood, although we also offer contemporary versions of classic American comfort food. Our philosophy is that good service is never intimidating service; and that honest, freshly-prepared food can often be more of a luxury than something you can't pronounce.

The Upstairs: One flight up from the main dining room and tavern is a 55-person room that was completely renovated in 2007 to create a ten-foot tray ceiling with antique exposed wooden beams and a working fireplace. There is a private bar and lounge area outside the room that can be used as a gathering area before events. In addition, there are two private rooms upstairs with a single table in each room. One of them can accommodate up to eight people, the other up to twelve. The Wine Room: The Wine Room is a 14-person private room that is separated from the main dining room by the Tavern's hand-crafted wine cabinets. Its unique semi-open design creates the perfect amount of privacy without losing the energy from the main dining room. Had made advanced reservations and we were seated in lounge area. It was very warm and humid and also much louder than dining room. We were seated by window near hostess so there was also a lot of foot traffic to door and restrooms. Never has happened at Scarlet Oaks before, so it was a disappointing, expensive evening. Scarlet Oaks is usually one of our very favorite places.

I had made reservation and asked for a table by the window. When hostess brought us to the table it was a tiny little table stuffed in the corner (but by the window). I asked if we could have another table and she turns around and tries to give us another tiny table against another wall. I said that table was not good either. I asked for the booth that was right there or the other table by the window, to that she said she just couldn't give us those tables, but that now she will have to put us in the pub area. She must of seen the look on my face because we ended up in the back room right by the emergency door. At least we were not going to be stuffed in a tiny table squished against a wall. So we get past the fact we have a crappy table and our waitress appeared. She was a shinning light since we arrived. She was very nice, helpful, understood my GF needs. I had the GF potato encrusted fish and my husband had the rib eye. We both enjoyed our meal, drinks were great. We will absolutely return. Wish I had room for desert...

We love Scarlet Oak but it did not deliver this time when we brought visiting friends from Wisconsin for their first experience. The server seemed disinterested and casual about my friends' seafood allergy-which proved crucial when the tomato app proved to be allergic. The runner brought out two similar meals of haddock which she did not know which was which and she had to return to the kitchen. The meals were not hot when she returned. My friend's meal apparently was missing and was not served with ours but came out eight minutes later. Our only poor experience of several but poor timing for our friends.

Had a lovely lobster bake pizza. The cornbread was delicious. My fiuend had a nice piece of haddock. Service was great, and the atmosphere was very nice. A terrific lunch.

Scarlett Oak Tavern is a great local restaurant. Always have good food, great service, and nice atmosphere. They always have farm to table options as well. Need to make reservations ahead of time as they are always busy.

Katie was our server. She was very efficient and friendly. Matt and Alex, the managers came over to talk to us. It's a very friendly atmosphere and all the servers are wonderful.

My wife and I have the same birthday. We always go out to dinner but this was my 50th birthday. I sent a note to that effect in my OpenTable reservation. Scarlet Oak Tavern used this note to make a great birthday night for both of us! Hostess wished us a Happy Birthday and the server, Becca, was great as well. She brought us each a class of champagne to start. We asked to used the Steak Add On scallop dish as an appetizer along with a Caesar salad and that was done with no problem. We both got steak and it was delicious. The desserts were decadent and came with a birthday candle on each one. We've been here before and always liked it but they took it to another level all because I wrote that note on OpenTable. I would and do recommend it to everyone and anyone I know.

Had a terrific dinner with friends at the Scarlett Oak Tavern; our server was attentive and the food was delicious. I had the planked salmon with spinach and quinoa and it was presented well and the tastes blended very well. Although the parking lot was full, their valet service was quick and efficient. Good spot and we'll be back for sure!
