What Insiders Are Saying
The Publican is a Medieval styled mecca of all things beer, pork, and oysters. If that's not appealing, you can't sit with us.
Great menu with a lot of vegetable choices. Our favorite was the roasted delicata squash- tender and flavorful. The oyster platter was also good, and the trio of spreads with bread was yummy. Our least favorite was the whiting- the fish meat was delicious but serving the fish whole meant lots of bones and work. Nice drink menu with interesting choices. Be ready to shout over the din!
Great food. Unfortunately was sat near the door, so it was a bit chilly. Overall, I love going to the Publican. The food is always amazing and the service impeccable.
Great experience, made our time so special ! Server was great :)
the only thing I wish you would bring back is the french pressed coffee
I’m sure people love this place but it was not for me. We had a reservation but still got seated elbow to elbow between 2 other couples at a long community table. It was so loud that my poor husband didn’t bother to try to talk to me and I had to use my menu as a rolled up megaphone to talk to him. Food was fine but not worth $100 w/o drinks. Tasting menu was already sold out so options were limited. Menu not really explanatory enough. Just not for us.
The food was awful across the board. Pork that was cooked very unevenly, ranging from dry as a board to raw in the center. Beef that had been sous vide to preserve the appearance of succulence...only to be grilled beyond any shred of tenderness on the other side. Meat served at room temperature with cold vegetable accompaniment. This was a shameful kitchen performance, not even close to befitting the price point and reputation.
Do. Not. Eat. Here.
We had a great time here Saturday night. The food was great, everyone in the restaurant was energetic and happy, and it really added to the ambiance! The servers are very well versed in the menu and are great about letting you know if you're over/under-ordering based on party size.
Was very excited to try this place because I heard so much about it. The music was very loud, could barely hear what our waitress was saying.
The pork belly was amazing and so was the cauliflower. The hams were very good as well.
The Cod came out over cooked, we couldn't even cut through it.
Overall good food but nothing out of this world.
Always great food, group of 4 ordered 1dz oysters, 4 vegetable dishes, and 3 meat/poultry dishes. We were recommended 1.5 dishes per person, and went with 2 instead. We had 1 dish we couldn't finish so 1.5 was spot on.
One minor complaint we ordered frites at the same time as the farm chicken, and did not realize the farm chicken came on a massive bed of frites. We would not have ordered the initial frites had the waiter caught our duplication. Can't really blame the waiter though for my inability to reconcile menu options.
This is a loud restaurant, so not the place if you want somewhere quiet.
4.5/5, will definitely be back.
The food quality was good, but the dishes were overpriced and the setting too loud.
Great food and fun atmosphere. Highly recommended
This place is mostly communal seating, so maybe a little less privacy if that's what you're looking for. Otherwise, the menu is very creative, the food is stellar and the servers are attentive.
We sat in front of the kitchen and we so enjoyed looking at them. The service was amazing. Highly recommend!
Great option for a large group - our 8 teens liked it as much as our 10 foodie adults. Servers were so helpful and responsive - prepared a veggie option with not notice that was one of the highlight.
Toast is good:) Not serve in a big size but tasty:)
The Publican was highly recommended to us (visiting from Australia) and it did not disappoint. Wait staff, she was so knowledgeable about the menu and wines. Pork belly was the best we have ever experienced. Our meals were extremely tasty. Highly recommend The Publican to friends.
Great atmosphere, wine list, inventive menu and friendly service. 3 of us shared the bbq carrots and honeycrisp apple veggie dishes as well as the pork belly and ny strip entrees. All very tasty. $$
Interesting seating Concept. If you’re making a reservation for 4 or less ensure you write on the reservation that you want a booth it’s a lot more comfortable and a nice experience because of the set up.
Would give 5 stars except for the noise level which some people don’t mind but that’s so overdone lately
Hadn't been for brunch in a while - always excellent across the board!
Good Germanic food. The sausage was so worth the price. Good brunch spot
I never know who my server is.
Delicious. Always a pleasure to eat there. Went for brunch.
The seating here is community-style, with long tables arranged in a square and high-backed chairs. This was awkward for those seated near the inside corners, as they were hit by chairs as others sat down and stood up. Despite bringing this to the servers’ attention, they continued to seat different parties closely adjacent to each other without enough room.
Been wanting to make to publican for years, finally did, and it was worth the wait. Incredible beer list both local and Belgian. Food is outstanding as is to be expected. Known for the meats, but the vegetable dishes were some of the most surprising and wonderful of the dinner. We ate family style and couldn’t have possibly enjoyed ourselves more.
While the ambiance was good for a Saturday brunch, we felt rushed and pressured by the staff, including having a plate cleared before a guest finished and getting the bill before we finished our meal. Our group hadn’t seen each other in years, so the pressure to eat quickly, pay, and leave wasn’t welcomed by us. While brunch turnover in a large city is expected, the approach here was unreasonable, especially since by the time we were done many tables were going unfilled by that point. On the plus side, food was excellent and would recommend this place generally.
In from out of town; my employer reserved a table for me and a friend as a "thank you." It was a nice gesture and much appreciated. Loved our server; he was attentive and friendly and had a great sense of humor (Bob Odenkirk). The food was delicious, though my avocado scramble left something to be desired for $15. I didn't know about the community-style seating and was very resistant at first, but I guess the conversation with my date made me forget about bumping elbow with a complete stranger. After all was said and done, we had a great experience!
The restaurant was way too loud, and seating was awkward to too tight.
As usual, Publican was and still is a star. But it was missing a few beers on the menu. The server explained that the restaurant had a run on the two I liked. It should know better.
Although the food was good or even very good, i somehow expected something different, was not expecting a tapas style entrees. food was good but was hoping for bigger portions i guess. it was my fault for not doing more research but the restaurant does not answer phone when trying to make reservations or basic info.
I know the fact that your menu is consisted of organic food and hence the high prices, it could have been accompanied by slightly more food.
Dinner was delicious. We had a porchetta, the ham, the cod, oysters, chicharonnes, and cocktails. Drinks were overpriced with a lack of creative selections.
A great choice in my quest to try new to me iconic Chicago restaurants. Another great choice! We had a birthday to celebrate and it was the perfect choice! There are many communal tables but I was happy to have our own 4 top for our birthday celebration. Our food choices were amazing. Who knew that carrots could be so good!?!?! We will be back.
I've been here a few times. Always a safe bet for late night quality food that isnt overpriced. I've gone down the menu twice now, truly cant go wrong with your selection. Remember, share things! Everything on menu is perfect for sharing!
Love the interior design and decorations. The Chicken Liver Patte is one of my favorite dishes in Chicago
Very good food, concept and atmosphere. The employees are wonderful!!!! For a romantic night out or to catch up with friends, this isn't the place. Extremely loud noise levels.
Great food, loved the king salmon and the shima aji crudo!
Publican just keeps getting better and better. I'm fortunately very local. So i'm a frequent visitor. Their pork rinds are amazing. The Belly Pork and Porchetta rock. Did the Taste of 3 Hams to start the evening. They are flavorful and interesting. Especially with the side of apples. All soaked down with a liberal selection of beers from the excellent selection. A real must do place. It's fabulous.
The flavors, food, and service were wonderful. However, being our anniversary, I expected to be seated at a table for 2...instead we were seated at the end of a table of 8 business people...which was a tad bit awkward.
Communal eating crammed together in a loud noisy room with music playing in the background is not the relaxing dinner we had hoped for. The food was ok but pricey. Good beer selection.
