Toronto Life Magazine 2017 Best New Restaurants #5
Absolutely an exquisite experience. The dishes started strong and just kept getting better.
We went to Canis to celebrate a birthday, we absolutely enjoy everything about that night! We had the tasting menu with 8 courses with the wine pairing. All dishes were absolutely incredible with original tastes and ingredients.
Wine selection was also perfect, with lots of natural/organic wines.
We particularly enjoyed that every cooker came to our table and present the dish they cooked and the description of all wines that were served (6 glasses).
One of the best culinary experiences I’ve had in Toronto! This place is all about the food
Walking upon the restaurant, it certainly does not look like much on the outside. The second story looks like it's falling apart and the interior is very basic with minimal decoration. I also could not help but notice a smell of something like dry cat food which I believe I saw someone else mention in another review on this site. Luckily I stopped noticing after a little bit. Other than that, we had a wonderful time. The servers were all attentive and explained the dishes well. They did not appear annoyed if I ever asked them to repeat themselves. The dishes were very nicely plated and we really enjoyed the food! Sometimes with tasting menus, one walks away still hungry but we were very full and happy at the end. The wine pairings were also lovely, save for one of them which to me tasted like the liquid version of oregano. I would certainly say to give this spot a try.
Exceptional food with exquisite wine pairing. Blown away by the quality and attention to deal. My new favourite restaurant in Toronto!
Fantastic place with young guns dishing up great food in a very thoughtful way. Just go there and join the ride!!
Top food in the city.
Amazing food. The attention to detail and flavours are incredible. The restaurant needs a bit of work inside as it’s a bit run down and smells musty.
The food was the absolute star of the experience at canis. Thoughtful and inspired dishes with fresh ingredients, great preparation, and fresh presentation. Everything on the menu was good, but the duck liver pate tart was especially stunning, as were the tender melting steak, smoky lobster, and succulent duck. Service was unobtrusive and friendly. Definitely a great place to visit for a special experience.
From the moment my wife and I entered till the end it was a remarkable experience. The 8 course meal was truly original and delicious. It was too bad that the place was not that busy. Would highly recommend if you are looking for a unique tasting menu.
We had a tremendous meal at Canis - service was understated but excellent, food was consistently flavorful and creative. I almost never write reviews but feel Canis deserves the good press!
Remarkable! Pace was a bit fast on a quiet night, but only minor quibble
One of the top 5 meals we’ve experienced!
it's a splurge but the level of service and quality of the meal make it worthwhile. Some genuine talent in that kitchen - highly recommended!
This is my second dinner at Canis and the food, as well as the service, remain top notch. The kitchen does a fabulous job of extracting the pure essence of the ingredients which results in beautiful flavours coming through each dish. The service is friendly and attentive and the interior is comfortable, yet modern/sohpisticated. The tasting menu is a good value as it would cost much more for a comparable meal in NY, London or Tokyo. Having dined at some of the best restaruants in the world, I highly recommend Canis to foodies looking for a delectable dining experience.
Dinner was fantastic and the wine pairing was great!
We very much enjoyed our experience at Canis . The tasting menu was inventive and held some wonderful plates - the halibut and shiitake, pork, tuna with dill, and duck breast were clear highlights. The wine pairing was very fairly priced.
The knowledge of the servers and kitchen staff was also impressive. They clearly were very comfortable with the menu and shared accurate and even fun descriptions of the wine and food. One small observation is that the service felt a tad impersonal. The service was excellent - just felt a tad more business and transactional.
On a whole we really enjoyed our time at Canis and would return.
The food and service was excellent. For each course a server described the contents of the dish. What would have been helpful is if one menu is left on the table for the duration of the meal in order to allow the diner to refer back to what the server indicated was in the dish. An appreciated gesture was allowing a taste of each of the wines we were considering before ordering a bottle. Overall a lovely restaurant and a great tasting menu.
Excellent combination of outstanding service and food. All of our various dietary needs were reviewed and incorporated seamlessly. Highly recommended
Food was delicious and different. Loved the different textures and flavors. Service was great.
Only suggestion would be to expand the cocktail menu or allow guests to order off menu standard cocktails like a martini
The noise was a little loud. Loved the background playlist but it was drowned out by an obnoxious inebriated guest two tables down screaming thru every conversation.
Best meal I had on this trip. Amazing flavours, beautiful plating, friendly staff, and perfect attention to detail.
It is definitely a restaurant everyone should try.
We had very high expectations due to all the accolades and high rankings this restaurant has received.
The food is truly incredible. The atmosphere is great.
My only 'less-than-perfect' comments were:
1. Price - It is not an inexpensive meal. Dinner for two you can expect to be paying at minimum $300. And that is why you are able to get reservations fairly easily at a top 30 restaurant in all of Canada.
2. Service - Incredibly professional, efficient and attentive. To the point where it felt a little impersonal and transactional.
All in all its a very good dining experience that everyone should at least try once.
My boyfriend and I sat at the chef’s bar, and it was by far the best seat in the house. The food was phenomenal and the chef’s were so welcoming to all of our questions. We will definitely be back.
This is our second time visiting the this restaurant! The food is exceptional it plays with all your senses. The creativity with the food and execution is all on point! The staff are all very nice and attentive - We will return
Try getting seats in the counter. The seats unfortunately are not the comfiest but it was interesting seeing them plate and prepare the dishes. They chefs were very accommodating with any questions.
Great food and service. Excellent adaptation of the menu to deal with food sensitivities. Highly recommended
On the basis of the food that we were served, I would recommend Canis to a friend. If one is looking for a high touch service with and end to end experience that feels like fine dining, I would choose another restaurant.
Upon arrival, we were shown to our table but were not greeted by our waitress. She didn’t not provide any overview of the restaurant or the tasting menu and merely placed a menu in front of each person. They also did not have a coat check so we had to hang our coats on the back of our chairs. I also noticed that the tables were a little rocky.
Our initial server was very passive and was not engaging. This impacted our experience. Later in the meal, we had a fabulous waitress from Prince Edward Island. If it were not for our interactions with her, we would have rated the service lower.
The food itself was very tasty. Not overly imaginative, but nice use of Canadian ingredients. Beautifully presented and flavourful.
Had an amazing time at Canis :) everything was so good !
The food was very good and really enjoyed the tasting menu aspect of the experience. Would highly recommend Canis to anyone who enjoys tasting menus.
Fast service which is always nice.
My husband enjoyed the food. I was not a fan. I would have liked some choice in the courses. I agree with another reviewer who observed there were too many courses in tart shells. The shells were dry and crunchy. Not very tasty. Overall I was disappointed especially given the price. The service was excellent and the restaurant wasn’t too loud which I appreciated as some places make conversation difficult due to noise. D
Amazing dinner and atmosphere. Fantastic service.
Great experience. We will go back to try another tasting menu.
Disappointing and overrated. We were very excited to try Canis, especially with it making the Canada’s 100 Best Restaurants list, but in our experience it is not worth the hype.
Food was great. The service started out a bit rocky. After we gave the server our wine to chill we weren’t visited again for 15-20 minutes. We were waiting for a guest to join us but would have been nice to have been asked if we wanted anything as we were waiting. Once the meal actually started the service was really good so that made up for it. Would definitely recommend.
The duck and short ribs were amazing - Balanced, Perfectly cooked and executed. All dishes complements each other well down to the desserts
great experience at the kitchen table seeing chefs preparing every dish; excellent presentation, Asian fusion with intriguing twists
The food was stellar. We live a few blocks away and finally was able to come. Service and presentation, very good. Delicious food you will not leave hungry. The liver pate tart was amazing, and black ink squid pasta, excellent. Only two things to comment on 1) The music volume. When I have to lean in just to speak or hear the person across from me, that's an issue. There was no relaxing, sitting back to enjoy. In addition, pop-rap with lots of words just doesn't go well with the kind of fine dining that Canis is. We thought it an odd thing. I did ask the waitress about 10 mins in, if was possible to turn it down a notch. I think she did, but it was still a hearing/speaking challenge. 2) Dessert is the last thing you eat. The 3 amazing ones served could have all be half the size, or just serve two. Wonderful detail, very sweet. The sorbet one should have been last. All delicious for sure, but 3 seemed excessive in our opine.
Food was amazing, mentioned this to the chefs and staff that it was better than Alo!
It took a bit of time to get our bill as the staff had their back turned for a while and not facing the dining room, we were the last table that night.
Such a great experience. Staff members were so amazing and accommodating. I would definitely recommend it to all my friends and family.
