The first restaurant in the United States to create a fully immersive multi-sensory dining experience, eculent combines food with state-of-the-art technologies to create a custom atmosphere and ambiance for each course.
Chef Skinner describes eculent’s cuisine as modern farm-to-table. Which means using only the freshest local ingredients prepared using the most modern techniques available. Many of the techniques and preparations used have been developed and tested at eculent’s fully equipped food lab.
This was our first time dining at a gastronomy restaurant. I enjoyed touring the food lab - seeing all the ingredients from around the world and equipment.
This is truly a unique dining experience -they changed the lights, music, pictures on the wall, and even the scents within the dining room with each course. We even ate with scented forks. We both enjoyed the approximately 25 courses. The price is expensive, but they only have 1 seating per night to a maximum of 18 people. I would recommend this restaurant for a special occasion. Chef Christopher came around and talked with each guest -asking them what their favorite dishes are. Chef Christopher said he changes the menu every 4-6 months so there is always something new.
Eculent serves a very different style of culinary experience. When you go, you do not just pay for food, but for the experience of molecular dining. At least a 12+ course menu for not more than 16 guests per evening. The food is very tasty, a joy for all senses. Service is outstanding.
This place is a Cant-Miss! As Bostonians would say, it's Wicked Awesome! The entire experience will blow you away! I can't give it away... but the food lab they use to change and alter their food, will have you reaching the outer realms of what your imagination can fathom, when it comes to the possibility of food. I can't say enough.....you must go.
This is a true culinary experience! If you're interested in a Cirque du Soleil experience with food this will being a treat.
We received a Groupon from family to celebrate our engagement. Neither of us had been to a dinner like this before and it was an awesome experience. We enjoyed trying all of the different food and flavors. Would definitely recommend this to friends for a special occasion or anniversary due to the pricing being a bit on the high side.
This is the second time we have been here in two months. The food is unique and is very tasty. The chef comes out and talks with the guests. He is very delightful and interesting to talk with.
Blake is the host/ server. He is nice but needs to remove his scripted talk. There were 4 tables with 2 people each and he says the exact same thing to every table, word for word. Having been in a service industry, he should try to get to know the people by name since there are so few. Also the same script for everything gets old, especially because every table is about 2 feet apart. It is a long evening with many courses but it was obvious to us that Blake was ready for all of us to be gone last night.
For the price you pay for this experience, I would expect more choices of beverages, not just water or their wine. Iced tea or sodas would be a nice option. The cost is $189/person plus service charge and tax. For two people your bill will be close to $500 without wine. Think this is a unique experience but not worth the money.
Also, make sure you check when you make your reservation as to what is on the menu. We were there in August. They told us they would be changing their menu to their fall menu in September. When we went last night, the menu had not changed.
The food is amazing. It's a fun experience to try at least once.
Great place for a fun evening of different, innovative, creative dining. If you don’t mind splurging for a special occasion dinner that’s fun, unusual, a real experience that you won’t find anywhere else, Eculent is the place.
Eculent is a very special place. There is only one other spot in Houston doing food like this - and it's not a restaurant - It's Alvin Shultz's pop ups. This is farm-to-table meets molecular gastronomy. Highest quality ingredients used in creative geekdom fare! I'm not going to spoil the experience for you by being too specific. It's expensive, but if you're a Foodie, it's your chance to have an experience like none other in this area.
My wife and I have been to Eculent twice now and will go back again. We enjoyed every minute of the experience, enough said!
Underwhelming experience for the price tag. The atmosphere was not inviting and quite honestly it felt "tired". Overall, the food was not great. Mid-meal we kept wondering when it would come to an end. We had a terrible bottle of wine with the meal. I really wanted this to be a great dining experience since I just moved to the area, but unfortunately it did not live up to my expectations.
We did Houston Restaurant week and what a dining experience it was! The food was so unique and tasty. If you haven't been to Eculent, I don't want to spoil the surprise of how this restaurant works. We enjoyed everything we ate, our only disappointment was the wine. We did the wine pairing and the wine was just ok. It was not worth the $20 for the three small glasses we received. Next time we go, we will probably not order wine as it is only their wine you can buy and we did not care for it.
The concept is interesting but the execution was poor and did not justify the extravagant expense, especially when compared to Michellin starred restaurants in the same price range. My review would go to 4 stars if they would lower their prices, focus on quality ingredients (being local doesn't automatically mean quality), and change the layout of the restaurant.

We went there to celebrate my husbands birthday, and it more than exceeded my expectations! It is was an unforgettable evening in terms of food palet ...à must detour! We will be back :-)
Eculent was the finest "dining experience" we've ever had. It was also our introduction to "molecular gastronomy". Our advertised 20 course dinner grew to 27 courses before we were done. From a caprese salad and a spicy PB&J served in tubes, to courses with "edible dirt", to escargot, to venison, to things that popped and made your mouth tingle.
The entire restaurant only seats 16. (One table for four and four tables for two all in a row. One bench of four with a kitchen view.) It's snug...but not cramped. They have just one seating at 6:30pm Tuesday through Saturday. The meal was PRICEY...even with a Groupon. (If you choose to have the wine pairing, plan to pay an extra hundred dollars a head between the wine and the service charge/tip before you are done.)
The food was, overall, excellent. Much is grown right there on site, most of the rest is locally sourced. The wine is from their own on-site vineyard. With 27 courses, however, there were a couple that just didn't live up to the expectation. A couple courses were just not to our "thing"...but the people who liked that "thing" really enjoyed them.
Unfortunately, the "main" course was one of the "things" that bothered me most. I was served several dark, gray sponge medallions that were advertised as a fine cuts of steak from 44 Farms. They were described as "medium-rare" and were anything BUT. When I asked why it was so colorless and dry, the executive chef said that it was because it was "sous vide" for 8-9 hours. Well, I'm no chef, but I know what a medium rare steak looks like and I've seen enough cooking shows to know that when a steak is sous vide to medium rare, it still comes out pink from edge to edge, and is very juicy when cut. This was not.
Eculent was an amazing experience! It was an evening well spent. It will be remembered for a long time and will definitely be recommended to our friends. While the meal was WAY out of our budget for a typical night out, it was a great special event.
My wife and I went with another couple to Eculent for the first time last weekend. The evening started out with a nice little tour of their garden and adjacent gastronomy lab. This was very interesting and very informative. Our group enjoyed this precursor to the dinning a lot. We returned to the dinning area and proceeded to work our way through the 20 courses for the evening. I chose to add the Wine Pairing to my experience and my wife choose to order her own choices of wines by the glass. Overall, the food was extremely authentic, original, and interesting, but not necessarily always great. Some of the courses I would rate as just "good" although a few I would rate as "exceptional" or "great". The "experience" is the main attraction here - not the food in terms of how wonderful the meal itself was. We've had far better meals in Houston. I also want to point out that our experience, while memorable, was maybe not fully complete. The wall mounted video screens that are suppose to choreograph with the courses were not operational the evening we went. This, we were told, was due to the fact that they were in the process of introducing a new menu and so some of the items being served hadn't been "paired" with the video/images yet. In any case, we missed out on the additional visual component of the experience.
In a nutshell, I might recommend Eculent for a one time, entertaining evening that will undoubtedly become a wonderful memory in your dinning travels. It was definitely a 1 time deal for us. And I strongly encourage you to do the math before you go. Other reviewers have mentioned that it's pricey, but without mentioning actual costs. The bill for my wife and I, including the dinner, my wine pairing, her couple of glasses of wine, the tax, and the added 18% gratuity came to just over $600.00. I then added an additional $10 to the gratuity, and bought a bottle of wine from their winery. Our Groupon saved us $179, but we still spent over $400 out of pocket.
It was very pricey for the meal, thank heavens I had a Groupon. I have had meals this expensive before and the value for this is really lacking. Food was good but not GREAT!
This was a special Mother's Day/birthday present for my two daughters and the whole experience was absolutely wonderful. I definitely recommend Eculent to anyone especially the foodie adventurers.
Very unique food. Only 6 tables and one seating a night. We had 20 different things to try. Expensive but worth the experience. Plan to go back again when the new menu comes out.
What amazed me were the unique presentations of various locally grown ingrediants i was very disappointed at the taste though. For the amount we paid, it was totally not worth it.
Amazing 20 course meal - we went on a Thursday night - there were 4 other couples sharing the experience at their own tables in the room. Each course was interesting and unique. Obviously most courses were small bites, but they were so much fun! The tour and dinner took a little over 3 hours. Great for a a special occasion. We weren't fan of their wines, though.
I signed up for a tasting menu of Molecular Gastronomy small bites with pairing of wines. What I experienced was soo much more! This was truly a total sensory experience and an education as well. I highly recommend any couple wanting to celebrate a special occasion etc. to book now..
Pitched as a locavore focus, I would instead say it is mixed locavore/molecular gastronomy. Interesting, odd, brilliant and frequently intense food concepts. Wine is included at an additional mark up since Eculent is affiliated with a small wine making effort. This is a food focused experience and not a wine-centric tasting. About 20 courses over 3 hours. Once and done, but well worth the expensive, unique experience.
A once in a lifetime experience. Perfect if you are looking for a less than ordinary dinner.
Eculent was by far the most unique restaurant I have ever been to. The meal was outstanding and the experience was something you just have to do for yourself. Yes it's pricey, but totally worth it for the effort put out by the Eculent staff.

"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." Was said by Arthur C. Clark, and he very well could have been speaking of Eculent. The courses were enchanting in not only presentation, but quality, taste and texture. It was truly an experience.
This was my second visit to Eculent. We had company in for the holidays from New York City and 1 of my guest is a "foodie". He loved the experience and the food as well as the rest of my family. They talked about it for days! The staff is excellent with their interaction with the customers. I will go back again.

Unbelievable presentation and food from a gastronomic futuristic perspective. Pricing is high and location is in the Kemah Boardwalk area. I believe they need to expand to a larger menu along with the tasting menu they only offer.
They need this to justify repeat customers due to the very expensive pricing .. ($300 + per couple)
Absolutely worth the drive. The experience is on par with some of the best in Chicago, New York, DC, and Vegas. Creativity meets science...brilliantly executed, incredibly creative and all details considered (sound, light, aroma). Just amazing!!!
Eculent was very interesting to say the least. A unique modern take on farm to table food. Very nice ambiance. The prices are just too high on the tiny portions. My husband was still hungry after we were done eating. After paying over 3 bills.
Our first time to visit so we didn't know the concept of the rest. Only heard that it was good and we were in the area. Quite a surprise. 1 week later and we are still talking about it. Definitely a redo for us. A really creative chef who loves what he does can create magic in the kitchen.
Interesting culinary experience. The 15 Course meal is a lot even though most are 1 or 2 bites.
Very friendly service. Can get to be very expensive with tax and tip. For us, a one time visit. They also have a winery and we enjoyed the wine too.
My husband and I found this spot by chance and loved it. I've lived in the Clear Lake area my entire life and have never experienced a dining adventure like this locally. This culinary feat is what one might expect to find in a downtown hot spot but surprisingly it's in Kemah.
Loved it! Hope Eculent is here for many more years.

We've been here several times, all of which were via a coupon found on TravelZoo. Incredible food and wine pairings. The journey through 15 courses was amazing and would recommend it to anyone who appreciates trying new things! Thing to note is that the service charge (albeit worth it) is a bit steep and is included on the bill - so be warned.
Wonderful food EXPERIENCE! Each course is meticulous in the planning and presentation, and while my dining companion was worried that we would have to stop for a hamburger on the way home after he saw the first 2 course sizes, he was completely satisfied by the 12th course. Blake is wonderful at keeping the pace and making sure the beverages flow, and Chef Skinner solicited feed-back from each course in order to re-examine those items that we commented on, and provided a strategy for how to eat certain courses to experience his ultimate vision for the full dining experience.
The only item I can comment negatively on was the music - they were introducing a new menu and were working on pairing the music with each course to enhance the overall effect. While I fully understand and appreciate the overall experience they are working toward, the ongoing comments/directions/instructions from across the room from the person enlisted in scoring the meal was very distracting, both to the diners and to Blake and Chef Skinner from what I observed.
Overall, a wonderful and memorable experience, and I am looking forward to returning soon for the onion soup bon bon!
