What Insiders Are Saying
Tartine Manufactory in the Mission is a huge operation with excellent pastries, coffee, and ice cream, and dinner as well.
Service was excellent at first, but breaks between courses got longer as the meal went on and had us wondering what happened. I also felt the portions were quite a bit bigger than I remember from previous visits, but that may be a plus for some people.
We LOVED this restaurant. It is energetic and the noise level is loud so not the greatest place for quiet conversation. The oatmeal bread is OUTSTANDING! The butternut squash hummus was simply incredible. The turnips were the best we've ever tasted! Their mushroom whole wheat pasta melted in our mouths! We are vegetarians and had a lot to choose from. Our server was efficient and knowledgable. We sat down next to the kitchen and watched the chefs work. Fascinating how many meals the three of them prepared. Hats off to their sous chefs who obviously did a lot to prepare ! Bravo! We will be back next time we are visiting San Francisco!
Culinary excellence is the hallmark of everything Tartine focuses on with a restaurant ambiance that expresses the simplicity of Japanese design with a modern flair. Poetry in motion with a challenge to your sense of complimentary flavors. Excellent ingredients leads to subtle and yet complex flavors.
Food and service was excellent. I invited a friend for dinner to celebrate her starting a new job. We have both been to Tartine before and love the food.
Very creative and delicious food. Cocktails are pretty awesome!
DO NOT have a 915 seating if all you intend to do is be RUDE and ignore your customers!
The waiter couldn’t be any less interested in serving us! We were seated, came by dropped off menus a while later, didn’t ask if we wanted drinks, I had to call him over, when we asked him for wine list he flipped the menus and walked away, we had to ask for a explanation of the menu, portion sizes....
We ordered one appetizer at his suggestion, because it was “a lot of food” it was a tartine consisting of a piece of bread and delicious topping (for three of us, eating at 940!). You do realize you get tipped on a percentage of our TOTAL bill? Then as we waited for our meal we saw him doing shots!
Not once did he check in to see if our food was good, if he could bring us anything etc. My HUGE pasta dish was exactly 17 3/4 strands of noodles! NEVER in my life have I been upset about a portion size! It looked like they took one portion and split it between the two of us. I could see more plate than entree.....brought us the bill before dessert, sulked while serving us said dessert....then my friends ice cream pie was so frozen solid we had to heat the STEAK knife it was served with over the candle to cut through it ( NO JOKE) Tasteless bc it was solid! My donuts were nothing to write home about....and his comment (ya that’s pretty solid).
As soon as our bills were signed he grabbed his bag, gave us a peace out sign and went home.
Sorry but WHAT the HELL?
Got the table right next to the kitchen, which was extremely loud and hot. I wish they didn’t have tables that close to the kitchen. I asked for a different one, and they were unable to offer me an alternative.
The food was fine, but nothing too crazy.
Small portions and a bit expensive bill was $86 before tip for two small plates of pasta, bread and a small smear of butter ($6), a piece of chocolate cake and one beer. It was good but not outstanding. Service a little slow. Would go back possibly but not in a huge hurry.
Always a fantastic meal here. Food is genuine and pure. Carefully selected great wine list. Knowledgeable and friendly staff.
The food is scrumptious, but the tables were too close together for fine dining at this price range. It was hard to hear my dinner companion, and the lighting was too low because I couldn’t see the colors of the food. But I love this place and will keep coming back despite my criticisms.
Have dined at Tartine multiple times. This time, we were disappointed as the food was not as creative nor as delicious as previous times. Standout dishes were the steak tartare and mushroom flatbread. Portions now seem smaller while prices have increased - it'll be a while before we return. But if you haven't been before, it is still worth checking out.
Underwhelming and disappointing experience. The service was pathetic. Our waiter was extremely inattentive and the food was slow to reach our table despite the restaurant not being completely full. Food was fine, but nothing worthy of Bon Appetit"s 2017 review.
creative food. small portions but great taste! def recommended.
As a visitor to SF, this is my third time dining at Tartine Manufactory. The menu selection and preparation are exceptional. The wine selections are vast. And the service is excellent! The lamb meatballs and steak tartar were outstanding. Highly recommend!!!
Tasty and inventive plates. I especially liked the purple clams (Nuttallia obscurata) with garlic and a touch of chili with spaghetti and the mixed pickled vegetables. Attentive service and a relaxed, casual atmosphere. The special cocktails are surpassingly strange, and $5-6 for bread and butter is a straight-up gyp. But otherwise, no complaints.
Food and service was fantastic!
Great introduction to San Francisco! Vibrant, innovative and casual.
Very knowledgeable and helpful service.
Delicious, creative appetiizers and entrees.
The chicken liver pate was good. The mushroom tagliatelle and the pork chop were great. The avocado toast was very-very plane. The doughnuts were tasty. The wine list is good enough. The service was good. If you live in the neighborhood it is definitely the place to go for everyday dining.
I liked the old Tartine restaurant much more. I think there was more attention to detail in the food and it was more complex and interesting. The food this time was just fine but certainly nothing special. For example, everyone is doing pickled/fermented vegetables these days and the ones I had at Tartine Manu. were very average and actually boring, a few pieces of carrot and some red cabbage. The shelling bean entree was missing intensity and depth of flavor. It was good but average.
The servers were great and helpful with the menu but the overall service style is a little to casual. For example, they just sort of put the new cutlery down on the table but not placing it. The style was a little to cafe/bakery not restaurant. Bread was excellent, thank goodness!
It was cold by the door and they wouldn’t move us. Then the food came out almost 30 min apart in the middle of the meal. We weren’t checked on for long periods and had to wait 20 min to ask for and pay for our check.
Servers all very nice but the service is inattentive and very slow. Our salad never came, so after our entree I asked and it was finally brought. Took forever to get someone to our table to begin with. We were brought the wrong wine. The chaos has been consister over several visits, and it’s a big disappointment - especially at these prices. The food is delicious but I’m getting tired of having to work so hard for it.
Business meal, casual, great pork ribs! amazing bread. Could have eaten more butter and more bread!
Suggestion - Raise the prices and give each guest a hunk of bread as they leave. really nice and attentive service people and helpers. unobtrusive and efficient.
I really enjoyed my dinner here, have had breakfast twice and they are great. and I took the servers recommendation for the ribs and they were great, home made pickles and salsa. portions are right and filling One small quibble. I am not sure how you eat pate without bread, although there was a spoon?, but to charge extra for the bread seems really odd. although both were terrific.
Every dish we got was delicious! Great place!
Service was impeccable as well as food but overall pricing was pretty high
Wonderful staff, and delicious food.
We preferred their brunch better (which we enjoyed a few months ago) compared to our recent dinner. Salad was special as were the cocktails but the pasta was ordinary. And I don't see why we must pay for the bread. Waiter was attentive and good.
Amazing food, cocktails and obviously desserts. Be sure to take home a loaf of Tartine’s amazing bread!
Extremely disappointing with the ambience & location of the table
Always interesting food, and a wide variety of delicious things to choose from. Some dishes really sing, others a bit more standard. But the choices are inspired and there is real talent in the kitchen. And that bread :)
Tasty food served in a kind all at once, haphazard manner. The place is lively, but it probably appeals to people younger than me (mid 70’s).....type of place that you are into and out of in one hour - even with a bottle of wine.
Food was delicious and service was great. The two of us made a meal of 6 of the smaller plates. We thought the portions were good and the prices reasonable. Loved the steak tartare!
After experiencing a difficult greeting from the haughty, disinterested hostess, we were seated at the bar instead of a reserved table. The food was quite good, noise level was high, and service was ok but not special. I probably will not return even though the food was very good.
Food was great. Waiter was great. Host was very rude.
Food was actually a bit disappointing given the price
Interesting menu of seasonal foods, nicely prepared in creative combinations. Ask to take home a loaf of their country bread; it's the best in town.
Tartine Manufactory is great ! The seasonal menu currently transitions from summer to autumn. We liked the tomato soup with goat cheese, gem lettuce salad with lemon tahini dressing , lamb meatballs, scallops with cauliflower + romesco. An super wine list perfectly pairs with the menu. Very good service as well. A true gem!
My second time dining here and it is still incredible. The small bites are so flavorful I just wanted to keep’em coming but the pasta and ribs were wonderful too. Shared a doughnut desert but wish we’d gotten the triple leche instead.
