About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Hot spot
  • Lively
Located just beyond the West Loop’s famed “restaurant row,” El Che Steakhouse & Bar is Chicago's go-to destination for steak, seafood, and live-fire cooking. The restaurant is modeled after Executive Chef/Partner John Manion’s fascination with Argentinean asados: traditional backyard barbecues surrounding the flame. A 12-foot custom-built grill serves as the centerpiece for this downtown asado which embraces South American-tinged meats, seasonal vegetables, fresh seafood, and of course, steak. The hearth also serves as the heart of the restaurant’s experiences such as dining at the Hearth Table.
Join us for happy hour at our cocktail bar, featuring signature cocktails and fiery bar bites or indulge in a glass of wine from the country’s only South American wine list. No matter what you choose, El Che Steakhouse & Bar delivers an authentic taste of Argentina in the heart of Chicago, seven nights a week.

For large groups, private events, or celebrations, email us info@elchechicago.com.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: John Manion

From the OpenTable editors: A live fire grill glows at the heart of El Che, a South American–inspired steakhouse lined with glossy black marble and tile that Chicago Magazine named one of the best restaurants in the city. Chef John Manion grew up for a few years in Brazil and got into asado grilling while traveling in Argentina. Come prepared to feast on seafood platters with charred lobster tails and the party steak, a 42-ounce wagyu flap with red and green chimichurri. Those in the know also appreciate the wine list, which exclusively showcases South American makers and won a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence.

Amazing experience at El Che in Chicago. The food was absolutely outstanding—rich flavors and perfectly cooked dishes. The staff was friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. I would definitely come back next time I’m in Chicago!

Great food and overall experience! Our server, Guillermo was awesome. Made great suggestions for our first time to this restaurant. And it didn’t disappoint. Steak was more rare than medium rare, but still delicious. Definitely worth another visit.

Good food and nice restaurant. The service was kind of rough especially for the time it was since it wasn’t full blown dinner rush yet. Had to look for our waiter a couple of times to even get the bill.

We had a wonderful experience at El Che. Steaks were done perfectly and the Japanese potatoes and asparagus were excellent. The sauces/flavors were really good. Service was great too. It was a bit expensive but if you don’t mind that and can afford to go-I’d suggest trying it. The only negative- and this was a bummer at the end of a wonderful meal - they charged some bogus service fee of 3.25% on the bill.

My waiter Scott was amazing! Very attentive and easy to talk too. We did not like our food, it was over priced and underwhelming. My “grilled oysters” were raw and slimy with barbecue potato chips on them. The asparagus were ok, but had ruffles potato chips on them too! Our 22oz ribeye was under cooked, we asked for medium/seared and it still was rare inside. The best side dish was the mushroom polenta. Nobody wants to spend that kind of money to only enjoy the polenta. Please stop adding potato chips to everything. Unfortunately, would not return.

Hey Juanita! I'm sorry to hear you didn't enjoy the food last time you were here with us. We want to serve some of the best live fire cooking in Chicago and I hate to see that we missed the mark when you were with us. I'd love to show you that we mean that when we say it. I've noted your comments on the oysters, ribeye, and asparagus and will be sure to investigate further. If you'd like to join us again please reach out to me directly at info [at] elchebarchicago [dot] com and I'd love to make a reservation for you. Hopefully we can host you again in the future.

I’ve been twice. First time was amazing. Second time we asked the server to help serve us the whole fish to avoid bones and he flatly refused. Not the level of service expected given the prices charged.
