The service was horrible. Waitress spilled ice and water on both sides of our table and did not clean it up. It took about 45 minutes to get our food. I had to stop a different waitress to ask for more water, because I could not find our waitress. I will not be back.
Arrived at the Exeter Inn at 12:30 as per our reservation for lunch and had difficulty finding anyone to seat us. There were possibly six other people in the restaurant and we were seated within three feet of one of the occupied tables. Service at best was less than fair. We waited for the waiter, waited for water, waited for menus. Food was good. Noticed another table had to get up to find their waiter to get butter for their table and then up again to get the check. We waited for our check and then attracted the attention of another waiter to locate our server to get the check.
Sorry. Will not be back.
Hash browns were supposed to be included in our dish but weren’t. Instead of marking down the bill or providing us something to go, we got one dish of undercooked potatoes to share. Just not ideal service
Because they where short handed my drink took 15 minutes, and my wife's coffee took 20 minutes. Both of us ordered prime rib. That came warm as did our mashed potato's. The waiter also brought our salads with the meal, not before. It's to bad because we where looking for someplace to go for Thanksgiving. We ruled the Exeter Inn out.
Underimpressed. Not as good as it was a few years ago. Scallops fishy
Very good for a restaurant that is part of the Inn. We started off with a drink at the bar where service was a bit spotty. Moved down to the restaurant for dinner and the overall experience was very good. The ambiance comfortable, our server was pleasant and appropriately attentive, and the food was of a high standard. If you are staying at the Exeter Inn, can't be any more convenient than this.
Lovely room with a welcoming feeling. We had a mixed experience with the food: one of our meal selections was outstanding - the spinach and garlic ravioli - but the other was very disappointing - the prime rib special of the day. The bread was very tasty. The ravioli were tender and plump, filled with spinach puree, and served in a delicious broth with spinach leaves, slices of garlic, artichoke hearts, and small bites of eggplant and tomatoes, all of which were hot (temperature-wise) and perfectly seasoned. The prime rib looked and smelled wonderful but unfortunately was tough. Really too bad since the server (who was quite good) clearly had been instructed to offer it as the featured item and expectations for its quality were set high. Next time we'll know not to order it. My guess is that steaks and chops and roasts are not a strong suit at The Epoch.
We ate there Sat evening with a friend from Minnesota. We were not too pleased with the general meals. The scallops were not tasty and on a bed of whatever with some spinach. It just didn't have a good taste. The chicken was ok but would rather have had a vegetable instead of the whatever that arrived with it. Great atmosphere and good waitress service but will not return again.
the food is always great! I would like to Epoch to return to using more local sources for their food; it is not necessary to indicate which farms produced which products.
Also, adding more USA wines to wine list (including by-the-glass), would be appreciated.
there was live music, very good and right level for backround music. I would have given 5 stars excet our server disappeared when we were through with our entree. The manager did step in and get things back on track through desert and getting our check.
Enjoyed Sunday Brunch recently and was very pleased. Food was cooked to perfection, cocktails were delicious, and atmosphere was very enjoyable. Can’t wait to return!
Checking in we encountered what was the rudest hostess we have ever encountered.. this BOY was not experienced at all and had no people skills whatsoever.. after asking to speak to his manager we took a seat at the bar and waited patiently. We eventually met her and she apologized saying he’s only 16 and inexperienced.. I understand waiting for a table 15-20 min but along with us were another couple waiting over an hour. It’s wasn’t the wait, it was the rudeness of the hostess that made this restaurant a NOT returnable one for us..
Excellent menu, great beer and wine lists. Staff was very good. Loved everything except the flank steak, which was too tough...manager swiftly removed if from the bill. Will definitely go back!
Are at the bar. Bartenders were very friendly and attentive.
Food was very good.
My wife and I ate at Epoch for a special "date night," and we were sorely disappointed. We waited an inordinate amount of time to be seated, although there were many vacant tables, and we had a reservation.
When we were finally were greeted and seated, we then sat for more than a quarter-hour before any member of the wait staff asked us about drinks.
The water glasses we first were given smelled of bleach.
When our salads were served, they were served without bread, which we observed had been served at all other tables in the dining room. When we asked for bread, it took far too long and two additional requests to get it. Our arugula salads were good, but not distinguished.
My wife's scallops were overly salted and spiced, and we suspect they were prepared so because they tasted slightly off. Furthermore, they were very sandy, as if no effort had been made to wash them before preparation.
My Statler chicken, was the best of the food we were served. It was by and large very good, save that it was slightly undercooked, with bloody meat around the wing joint.
We ordered a side of "Housemade Farro 'Tabbouleh,'" which sounded interesting, but which disappointed because it was essentially farro lightly dressed with a very bland tabbouleh-like "dressing."
Overall, we were very disappointed with Epoch: Service was slow and unprofessional, even confused at times. Ingredients in some dishes appeared not to be fresh and were not well prepared. The atmosphere of the Exeter Inn is classic New England, but the decor of Epoch is cold, impersonal, and incongruous.
Our dining experience was unpleasant.
Things got off to a rocky start but improved along the way....server had a large party nearby which rcvd most of her attention. Never a good excuse for not being greeted and getting beverages.
Never having been before or knowing portion sizes, we ordered too much.
Small ceasar is good for 2 sharing,- large for 4.
Both entrees very good.
Next time we will order entree after finishing starter.
Entrees very good.
Will return....remain hopeful !
Outstanding food and service, both for dinner and breakfast. Might drive the two hours for another meal.. the food was that good!
Food was excellent. Outside table which was very nice until the mosquitos showed up. Quiet quant setting conducive to having business discussions, or with a friend.
Very nice atmosphere. Excellent food & service
Service started off nicely, but at the end when we were getting eaten by mosquitos our server seemed to disappear. My husband and brother in law never ate their meal - the scallops were terribly overcooked and the crab was so fishy tasting that it ruined the whole dish. For $30 a meal we were very disappointed. The guys moved to the bar and the server continued to clean up around us without even looking at us. We were waiting for the bill and I finally had to flag her down to get her attention. The appetizers were delicious, the margarita was so incredibly tart that I almost gagged with every sip, my meal (pork tenderloin) was good but nothing to rave about. Overall not impressed with how much we spent we really wanted a special evening. Will not return.
Always great food at Epoch!!
A fabulous dining experience. I booked a hotel room and made a dinner reservation to celebrate our twenty-second wedding anniversary. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable.
The presentation of the food was fantastic and the meal was cooked superbly, We would highly recommend the hotel and restaurant.
We went for Father’s Day. The food was excellent and the setting/ambiance was perfect. It was not loud so my family could hold a conversation. The only negatives were the coffee tasted stale and the waitress was not very personable. She was very abrupt with us even though it wasn’t busy. She was not unpleasant, she just seemed to want to move on.
The Epoch restaurant has become one of my favorite breakfast/brunch place to go in Exeter. Their dinners are also excellent. The food is very good and the atmosphere and service are great. I highly recommend this restaurant.
The food, service and atmosphere were great. The server and chef handles my wife's food allergies. We will be back soon.
Nice to bring a visitor to view the wonderful building....adding a great meal made the evening even more special.
One thing that could be considered is lowering the level of entertainment....it was sometimes difficult to hear our table conversation with the music in the background....
Otherwise ,a nice evening.....
We were there to celebrate our anniversary and it couldn’t have been a better evening. The staff is always superb, the food is wonderful and the atmosphere is great. We love Epoch!!! Thanks for making our evening special.
I have eaten here often, it is consistently good. I like the food choices, the drinks, the view of the garden.
Unfortunately the quality of the food was less than expected in a restaurant of this level and price range.
We came for dinner the night before our daughter's graduation from UNH. It was lovely! Service was great, bread basket had bread and crackers and three options for spread/dipping (I love options!), drinks, food...everything was great. I also experienced by far the BEST cappuccino I've ever had!!
We were dining on Mother’s Day. The setting was formal and nice and the food was delicious with healthy portions. We did not leave hungry. They also have a nice outdoor seating area which I am sure is great in summer. Oddly, they did not have a hostess present while we were there or the hostess was also serving tables, so it took some time before we were greeted. The entrance is a bit awkward which may have been resolved with having someone man the front desk. The service was just ok. It may have been that they were short staffed. Worth another visit, the food was really very good.
We had a lovely dinner at Epoch last week. The salads were excellent - fresh, crisp and creative. The soup was also outstanding. The show stopper was the sirloin steak - generous portion, tender, tasty and exceptional sauce, asparagus and starch. This really was an excellent meal!
We loved the new menu. Excellent variety. Our waitress was very helpful and professional.
A delightful venue adjacent to the garden. Lovely brunch spot!
My sisters, my mom and I all went to Epoch to take advantage of the Portsmouth Restaurant Week special menu. The options were varied and the food was fantastic. We enjoyed a Sauvignon Blanc and a Malbec off of the wine list...both were wonderful. The Restaurant Week menu was a great value and we enjoyed ourselves very much. Would definitely recommend Epoch to anyone looking to dine in a really interesting historical building with a nice atmosphere and delicious food!
Good food in a great ambience
We always enjoy dinner at the Exeter inn . The food is excellent and the people are very welcoming and friendly. Nice table setting and the wine is reasonably priced.
The food was wonderful-we waited for a while before being greeted and having our drink orders taken but after that the service was good
The food was great and the presentation was creative . We were a group of four friends, some with hearing difficulties and the dining room was quiet enough so that all could enjoy the conversation . Not always the case in most restaurants lately . We will definitely be back .
In my online reservation I noted that this was for a birthday. Evidently staff didn't get the message
