Some of the comfort food stand-bys have disappeared from the menu, and the selection is disappointingly small. They used to have a great pot roast -- but it's long gone, in favor of some new combinations that leave many diners puzzled. The chef seems inordinately fond of strange combinations of various ingredients, unrecognizable as anything that might appeal to an average palate. I settled for a hamburger on my last visit, and bit into a very hard piece of gristle or bone fragment -- I didn't want to take a closer look. It's a beautiful room, in a building that many Portlanders cherish and would like to support. But I expect most of the customers are guests in the hotel; it does not draw a "downtown worker" crowd, and understandably so.
The waitstaff were attentive. The food wasn’t so good. The mixed greens with grilled chicken had very little flavor. The chestnut soup was a huge disappointment - no spicing. Maybe the chef had an off day but I’ve never had soup or salad that tasteless.
My partner and I, went to Urban Farmers for his
Birthday dinner. We enjoyed the atmosphere, the food was delicious, friendly Staff, and Ana I g cocktails. Highly recommend to try. Will definitely become regulars.
Our server was very few and far between us and other tables. He only brought us drinks and nothing else. It took 80 min after being seated for our meal to arrive. We even waited 20min for our dishes to be cleared and our check to be taken. For such an expensive meal, better service was expected. It was not a great birthday celebration experience. I wouldn't go back.
The server was very disengaged from the experience and while we were wrapping up he reminded us that the table was reserved in 15 minutes in a very abrupt manner. With it only being 5pm and the restaurant was very empty, it felt very rude for him to brush us away. Not impressed.
Went for our anniversary. We love Urban Farmer. Service is always great, non-intrusive but attentive. Food was amazing without a doubt, as it always is. Ambiance is perfect, quiet and comfortable with a great atmosphere in the open atrium of the Nines hotel. Love it. Can be causal or dressed up.
As always, The Urban Farmer was a delight for a recent dinner. This was a celebration meal. We enjoyed cocktails and great wine, foie gras and charcuterie and then ate family style, sharing bits of steak, scallops, ahi tuna as well as fabulous side dishes from mac and cheese to local wild mushrooms and charred carrots with romanesco -- my favorite! Great attentive service and well worth the price for a splurge meal!
Food was marginal, my hamburger was overcooked, really too pricy for what you get.
Our server, Casey, was knowledgeable, pleasant and professional!
Food was just okay, desert was very good. Unfortunately the service was terrible. For what we anticipated would be a nice restaurant we did not expect such poor service. At one point you could hear the servers being loud, having fun, and ignoring customers.
Cool experience. The service is really good. The food quality was average at best translating to over priced. Again, cool place good people and average food. Would be hard for me to come here again for that price.
Had a weekday evening dinner with a date. Server took forever to come back, had to ask another one. When first server came back, NO apologies for delay. Ordered fancy wagyu NY steak, didn't quite taste and look like the wagyu I have been getting, maybe it was a different cut. I understand US quality is not the same as Australian or even Kobe from Japan, but this was a little bit disappointing. Some issues with our drink selection also. Overall, place looked nice, but not as upscale as I thought based on the fact they had a dress code. Likely won't go back, too many better options out there.
Breakfast was excellent as always. My friend and I split the ham Benedict and cast iron pear pancakes which were both fantastic. The Bloody Mary bar does not disappoint. The ambience is perfect for a relaxed, beautiful dining experience. I’ll be back.
The quality of the meat was poor and it was under cooked. Had to send it back 2x. Uncharacteristic, but will affect our interest in coming back.
I had the Wagyu Ribeye and it was one of the best steaks I have ever eaten. The hostess, waiter, and chef were all very pleasant and accommodating!
This one of the best meals I have ever had! The service was great and the food even better.
Urban Farmer doesn’t disappoint! Delicious steak options, vegetables and salads. Beautiful wine list and love the setting!
Food was good. Steaks were good.
My steak was supposed to be 30 day dry aged but it was chewy and tough. I’ve had a better steak at Outback for 1/4 of the price. The sides where OK but not exceptional. The service was OK but didn’t stand out. I don’t mind paying these prices for a really good dining experience but it was all around mediocre. I had a really amazing steak at RingSide Steakhouse that I would recommend. There is better in Portland for this price range.
This is a hidden gem. I am always able to get a reservation at the last minute. I love eating in the Pantry Room! So fun to look at all the glass mason jars filled with veggies and fruit. Waitress named Laura was so nice and helpful. A great overall experience ever time I eat here.
My sister and I met between Bend and Seattle in Portland for a girls weekend. We are both Keto / Low Carb enthusiasts and it is harder than you might imagine to find cuisine without added sugar, starch, or gluten. Urban Farmer totally delivered - we even had more than one dish to choose from! I want to make sure to thank the Chef for that, I was so appreciative. Our server Chloe was wonderful, knowledgeable, and just the perfect amount of attentive. Thanks, girl for the great choices on our behalf.
The New York steak that I had, aged 21 days, was most mostly gristle. Very dissapointing.
The salmon was amazing. Charcuterie board had very interesting and tasty choices.
The cuisine is a bit too creative for my taste -- that is to say, the chef comes up with combinations that don't work. The duck confit frittata is, in reality, an omelet with duck meat. The omelet is fine, the duck meat is fine, but the combination is quite unappetizing. Duck confit is one of my favorite dishes. It's fairly easy to prepare, and the meat is tender and flavorful. But when it is buried in egg, it loses its distinctive flavor -- at least at the hands of this chef. The egg flavor overwhelmed the duck. It might as well have been chicken. But duck simply does not belong in a frittata. Urban Farmer should stick with what it does best -- traditional dishes like meatloaf or pot roast. But alas the chef feels compelled to present something "new" and "distinctive," and his/her experiments are quite hit and miss.
Went with my in-laws for a birthday brunch, everything was delicious, and the service was fantastic. We had one issues where part of our food came out before the rest of it, but we were sent out a couple of extra things to compensate.
My husband and I had a terrible experience for our anniversary dinner. We requested that the kitchen add no extra salt when finishing a dish due to his heart condition.
When the salad arrived, it was doused with sea salt. It was clear that the kitchen was offended by special instructions, despite it being medical.
There is clearly something going awry in that kitchen.
This was upsetting, as Urban Farmer has been amongst our favorite restaurants which we have frequented often.
We won’t be going back.
This was My second visit l. Food was really good. great brunch options. Pancakes were fabulous. I loved how they take advantage of seasonal fruits and vegetables.
Great. Service not so great. Though they where very busy.
Our recent visit to UF was to celebrate my wife’s birthday and was so noted in the reservation. The food was excellent - perhaps the best steak ever BUT and this is important in a restaurant with expensive offerings, we felt rushed and right from the outset. This is was supposed to be a relaxing evening but was somewhat soured by the “pushy” environment.
We had a wonderful Oregon Pinot Noir, and our option was full grass fed beef, Tartare for Appetizer and a delicious medium-rare NYork as main , with Creamy Spinach and Potato tart! All 100% recommended!! No room for dessert! Excelent ambiance+extra nice people helping!!
Food was fantastic, but the environment was out in the middle of a large hotel atrium, not very charming or romantic. The atmosphere really detracts from the overall experience.
Very pleasant atmosphere in unique indoor location.
Quality of food was good though three of four of us were surprised at how small their portions were, given the price.
One diner had a second salad in that the first salad was so very small that she needed a second to consider them together as 'lunch'.
Great food and lovely hotel but a very muted atmosphere. Not a restaurant vibe due to the setting within the hotel. Felt more like having dinner in a very plush bar.
We chose this restaurant because we were staying at The Nines hotel. Also, they appeared to be a good place for local ingredients and grass fed beef. In our party we all ordered steak however mine ( I ordered medium) was so over-cooked it was inedible. I have never returned a steak in a restaurant and I will usually just eat something I don’t like In order to not make people uncomfortable. This time there was no way, the meat was so destroyed that it dried out my mouth with one bite! They kindly offered to redo it and to be on the safe side, I ordered medium rare. The new steak was cooked past medium but not as bad as the first one, so I ate it. We spent about $400 for 4 people and it was probably one of the worst food values I have ever experienced.
If you are going to advertise all the wonderful beef that you have, please, find a chef that can cook it properly. It’s such a shame, they must have to throw out a lot of steaks.
Excellent service and foo. We very much enjoyed our meal.
Ambiance is fantastic. Food was ok and service was poor. Coffee is truly awful in this restaurant and hotel in general. We stayed here for the weekend and this definitely needs to change.
Overall, other than the beautiful and creative decor, I would not recommend.
Celebrated a job promotion with a steak dinner here. 2 of the 3 in our party had the NY Steak Tasting. One of them was just about perfect. However, none of the steaks on the second diner’s plate were cooked to correct temp. One steak was sent back, but the newly fired steak came out even more blue. The manager took one look and said, yes it’s raw. He offered to comp 1/3 of the dish price — after having waited an additional 15 minutes and none of them were cooked right. Steakhouse? I beg to differ. We love the brunch here, but do yourself a favor and go elsewhere for a steak and a manager who knows how to make things right. Had we known we were ordering only 2/3 of the dish selected, we wouldn’t have ordered it at all. The entire dish should have been comped as it was a disaster from the beginning. The waiter was also very disinterested in waiting on the table after the 2 inexcusable mistakes. Thanks UF for making our celebration a complete disaster. Will not be back for dinner.
Food was good. Steaks were average and a bit pricey for the quality. Nice portion size on entrees and service was excellent.
The hostess Anne was incredibly professional and kind. I felt welcomed and valued.
The server was perfect.
While it is a costly meal the food and service are fantastic!
