Alfred's Steakhouse

$31 to $50
Steakhouse
Alfred's is currently closed for renovations and building upgrades.

Tucked away in a little alley in the financial district, Alfred's feels like a hidden treasure when you walk through the big, glass etched doors. Alfred's has been serving dry-aged beef grilled over a mesquite flame since 1928. While Sinatra croons, you'll instantly relax in the clubby red interior with plush leather booths and sparkling chandeliers that give a sense of sophistication without any of the pretension. The wine and cocktails are perfectly priced with a little extra in the martini shaker. It's unabashedly old school, from the classic sides to the welcoming hospitality. It's what a steak joint should be.

Real steaks. Real martinis. Real San Francisco.

Alfred's is open Monday thru Saturday at 5:30 pm and offers 3-hours of complimentary self-parking at the Hilton Hotel. Several private and semi-private party spaces available.

Bar service needs to be polished, an order of a rosemary Gimlet could not be filed. Bar was out of rosemary on a Saturday night? The quality of the beef was excellent. True Prime Beef

I Have been going to Alford since it was on Broadway. About 40 years now. This is the first time I went since they closed and reopened under the original owner. The porterhouse was excellent, the Caesar salad as I remember, I love the small bite starter. I would love to have the option of a baked potato with all the garnish, even if it was an up charge. The service was very friendly, however our waitress was serving a lot of tables, And was hard to get a hold up for water refills etc. She could not have been nicer though. The ambience is wonderful, I’m very happy Alfreds came back even better than before. I’ll be back! Thanks

I had been looking forwards to this dinner, and it was rather underwhelming. We won't go back. Ordering was clumsy, they don't allow ordering to share as a table. You must follow either the "full dinner" or "a la carte" options. It felt really awkward as we just wanted to order several things to share. Steaks were overcooked, and service was slow. I understand they have gone under a management change, so perhaps they are still working out the kinks.

Incredible!!! Best bang for your buck in such a romantic and elegant setting. Fantastically delicious steaks, the tenderest filet tips in yummy whiskey mushroom sauce, though each perfect on its own. Being welcomed by the delightful host Al Petri sets the tone for a VERY enjoyable evening! :-)

I made a reservation for one as I was traveling for work. I arrived a little early and was seated immediately. After waiting over 15 minutes for a server, I had to get up and find the hostess to tell her. She apologized and took my order. The hostess brought my drink - and then still no server. Finally my flustered server came to the table and apologized, saying they were short handed. The restaurant had a few larger parties, otherwise it was not at all crowded. Service continued to be slow, and I finally received my food, which was ok, but nothing special. The waitress did offer up a cocktail on the house, so they made some effort to acknowledge the situation. I noticed the Manager watching the dining room and checking in with other customers, but he never approached me. The final kicker was an 18% service charge tacked onto my bill. I always tip, and tip well, but usually only see service charges/gratuities automatically added for large parties. I addressed my concerns with the manager as I was leaving as I felt it was only fair to let him know directly. He apologized but with very little conviction. He made no attempt to make the situation right or ask what he could do to encourage me to return. I travel extensively for business and appreciate restaurants that treat single diners with respect. That was certainly not the case here. I won't be returning and cannot recommend this restaurant.

The filet Mignon was very tender and cooked just how we like it. We shared the 12 oz. What a nice option to share an entree with the two sides for each of us. We still had leftovers! Very elegant decor. Nice night out.

Alfred's has reopened after a brief hiatus, and I'm happy to report they brought the quintessential steakhouse menu for which they have been famous for years. If you're in the mood for a great steak, excellent Caesar salad, sourdough bread and all of the accompaniments, this is the place.

The old Alfred’s is back and it is fantastic. Steak house prices but far better than it was with the company that had acquired them. Now the family has taken it back and it is Fab! Full dinner includes everything you could need or want! Staff on point and free parking at the Hilton across the street.

It was sadly a very bad experience. Though the old man came back, the rest of the staff and chef is brand new and totally incompetent. It took us two and a half hour to get through the full dinner. We waited twenty minutes to get our orders in. Then another wait for the light bites. There were four of us. The bites consisted of one piece each of very thin salami, baloney, cheddar and two slices of Brie to share amongst the four of us. If you order it from the menu, it would be $10. We waited another twenty minutes or so, and suddenly the steaks turned up before the salad. So they took them back and we waited again for the the salad. The Caesar salad was very sour. Too much vinegar. There the steaks came. I ordered a ribeye. But they gave me a N.Y. strip steak. The waiter insisted it was a ribeye. She called the manager, who also insisted it was a ribeye. He came back with a raw ribeye steak to show me. It looked like a ribeye and nothing like the steak they served me. Since the steak was also well done instead of medium rare, the manager agreed to cook up the ribeye steak he was showing me. That steak tasted like a ribeye and was actually very good. There was no apologies for the bad service and mistaken food. No free drinks or deserts was offered. Instead they tagged on 18 percent after tax for tips in the bill, even though we were only a party of four. There were no disclosures anywhere that tips are automatically charged. Well maybe with the auto tips, they can get away with and service and food. But how can they continue to do business, I wonder.

Best Chicken Fried Steak ever tasted! A true San Francisco experience enjoyed, especially with the admirable host, Al Petri, in the front of the house.

I came here almost a year and a half ago. I remember the fine tasting steaks and wine. Now, the experience is the opposite. The menu has changed. The food and service is terrible. I wondered if this was the same restaurant? Sadly, I will never return and will seek a better steakhouse in the city.

I love this place. It is such a classic place. It's just how a steakhouse should look. We are so glad it is back in the hands of the old owners. The wait staff, as it has always been, is very professional. They know when to take your plates, and when to leave them until everybody at the table is done eating. Everything we had was excellent, except the cream spinach, which has always been my favorite here, was not as creamy as I remember it. I think the kitchen, once it gets familiar with the new/old owners, will have the great creamy spinach recipe back on the table. The menu is about the same as the original old one, except that they took away the wonderful baked potatoes with all the fixin's, and added a smashed red potato. That red one doesn't old a candle to the old big baker. They have added a complimentary meat and cheese board that goes quite well with your Martini's or Manhattans. Speaking of Martini's, It is great to get a Martini served with a shaker that has more Martini in it. Salads are as good as ever. Desserts looked really good, but we were just too stuffed. They have a few kinks to smooth out (Hint: creamier, and bakers), but when I want to splurge a little, this is my place. Don't bring your Vegan friends unless they are open minded. One more thing, FREE Parking for 3 hours at the Hilton. Where in S. F. would you get Free parking. Nowhere that I can think of.

Wasn’t very busy on a Thursday night but our waitress wasn’t checking on us very much. My husband ordered his steak rare, and got medium rare, and the wait for a new steak to be fired up was ridiculous. Other than that, the food and restaurant were lovely.

It is nice to see an old world steakhouse in the city. So much of what you find now is very fancy trying to too much to the meat. My wife and friends are going to dress up in Goodfellas wear and go enjoy a steak like in the old days. The wait staff is funny and very nice. If your a snob or like to Instagram the latest stuff, you won't like it. If you want a good piece of meat in a classy joint - this place is for you!

I'm so glad to see that Alfred's is back. It's like time travel to the swank era of San Francisco, with crystal chandeliers, red leather booths and waiters in ties. Jack Kerouac wrote about having martinis at the bar at Alfred's in "On the Road." Those famed martinis are still being served, along with dry-aged steaks. The latest menu has you pick your cut of meat, and then everything else comes with it under that one price. They start with a charcuterie for the table, then your choice of a starter (salads or shrimp cocktail), plus two side dishes and your choice of a sauce with your steak. It's a pretty simplified menu, also evocative of the past, but a remarkable value for San Francisco these days. The ribeye I had was outstanding and perfectly cooked. The french fries are miraculous.

Alfred's is back in all of its old-school glory. The previous owner put a bit of an updated concept on top of Old School SF, which was an odd fit. It was a replica of the old place, but with a dinner-as-theatre gloss. And the menu was a little fussy. I guess it wasn't successful and luckily, common sense prevailed. Now, the menu is much simpler than even the old Alfred's with a prix fixe menu. The only thing that changes is what cut of meat you want. You get dependable small bites (charcuterie), your choice of salad or prawns, cut of meat and traditional sides and dressings. My wife and I are eating small portions of protein, so for $25 more, you can share the meat and get all the accompaniments. Cocktails are great, desserts (choice of two and only two) are delicious, so there's no going wrong. The room is a step back into the 50s and the only true representation of a classic steakhouse in the City. Then there's the waitstaff. The crew is all out of central casting--wonderfully, endearingly quirky and make you feel instantly at home. I wanted to hug 'em all and take them home. All in all, a sigh of relief that one of the very best, least complicated, dependable experiences in SF is back, even better than it used to be. Go, go often, and bring your friends. We love you, Alfred's!
