We had the chateaubriand with side dishes and they were cooked to perfection.
I have to give a '3' to service. It might have been the waiter's first day, but he could not answer most questions. The most depressing was when we asked the waiter to describe the dish, he read off the the side accompaniment of the main dish on the menu rather than describing what the dish actually is! He knew very little about the menu including the desserts, and no suggestions on wine.
I have stopped ordering scallops at Restaurants because they are usually overcooked or just not that flavorful. The scallops here were presented in the shell in a light but delicious sauce with spinach and bacon but were perfectly cooked. The other dishes (filet and tuna tartare) were also perfectly cooked and were accompanied with tasty sauces that complemented but did not overpower the main dish.
Vine street is still a pleasant experience but their new prices put it at a level comparable to celebrity chef restaurants in Manhattan and it is not where they started or where they are now... unfortunate. I will only eat there rarely from now on as there is better value elsewhere.
I had to send back my risotto as it lacked any flavor, but was promptly served a salad instead. Waitress was very apologetic and sweet.
Lovely restaurant, very good service, and very good food. I found it to be a bit pricey (and I live in NYC, so that's saying something), but I'd go back for sure.
Really good food! Lovely ambiance. Pleasant service.
we arrived early (5:30) because our schedule changed on a Sunday night so we were fortunate that the restaurant was not very crowded then. Service was excellent, but food magnificent. Must be the best restaurant in the greater Hamptons area. Ambiance very cozy, esp in autumn.
As always good food, but not so good as to justify the $$.
Have been twenty times. The service and ambiance are very pleasant but the food doesn’t stand out as anything special and regular dining value is lackluster. I can recommend the 3 course Prix Fixe menu at $35, served daily when open except holiday weekends (which recently included Columbus Day, Monday, Oct 8). Unfortunately the on-isle restaurant pickings are slim on weekdays out of summer season.
This has to be one of the best restaurants on Shelter Island. Our first visit last weekend and glad we made it. The food choices were interesting and seasonal - everything tasted fresh and fantastic. Would love to go again but this was a weekend away from NYC and not too many reasons to go to SI in the Winter (it's more of a summer treat).
Would gladly return in a NY minute - hope to make it back some day soon!

The food is always excellent but the service has been very poor this year. Pleasant but inattentive.
Loud ,overpriced, amateurish waitstaff, stack dirty plates, tables crowded together. Second rate place tourist trap.
Vine delivers a consistent experience at every visit. Best choice in the island!
Great food that is consistently top notch. Wait staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Really worth the ferry ride from Sag Harbor
Great food and a warm welcome staff
Had dinner at the bar. Josh the bartender could not have been friendlier. Amazing ribs and roasted fish!
Everything at Vine Street Cafe was superb. The food was very well prepared and tasty. The service was impeccable and efficient. We loved the unique cocktails and the delicious warm bread!
Excellent food and service; daily specials always a great choice
We haven’t had dinner at Vine Street for two years. A lot has changed since then...higher prices, poorer service and an uninspired menu. Too bad.
The hostess gave me a great table for my 40th birthday celebration. The entrees were great but someone PLEASE ask the chef to taste the mixed green salad. Honestly... for $15 it was a very small pile of mixed greens (nothing else) with”0” flavor. I’ve been going to vine street for years and this same disappointing salad has remained on the menu.
The service was excruciatingly slow. Then the power went out and we had to wait for the computers to reboot before they could process a bill for the evening. In the end, we had to leave our credit card info, which they said they would process later that night. We told them the percentage to add for service — all on trust. It is two days later and we have not seen the bill processed yet.
My wife and I always visit Shelter Island at the end of summer to celebrate my birthday. It’s our tradition to stay at The Chequit and have dinner at Vine Street Cafe. This was the first year we had new addition join us, our 10 month old son (Note: VSC did not have any high chairs). We had an early reservation at 5:45 PM and they accommodated us in a semi-private area, which was great. The food never disappoints. Great wine selection. Always such an enjoyable experience! (Even with a semi-behaved infant)
Ferry ride to the island is charming; parking at the restaurant is easy and plentiful; wait staff service was wonderful; wine selection was great; food was delicious. This is a real gem
A bit pricey but don’t mind paying for good fresh food prepared well. Vine street cafe does not disappoint!!! Good service, good food and an overall pleasurable dining experience!!! Well done!!
Wonderful early dinner on a Thursday evening albeit a bit on the pricey side service ambiance and food all good can't wait to go back but unfortunately too expensive to be our weekly "go to" place
Price fix possibly the way to go next time vs ordering ala carte
Food quality good, however, expensive for what it is. We dined at 6pm and it was quite kid friendly. Physical soace was nice. Only real criticism was cost
Delicious food, beautifully prepared. Plus excellent service and a lovely room. We highly recommend Vine Street Cafe.
Almost all the food was fantastic. And it is a really nice restaurant. But the strawberry shortcake, which looked gorgeous, just wasn’t up to expectations created by its beautiful look. We did in fact order it because we saw it at the next table and it looked so wonderful. The strawberries themselves weren’t very good and the sauce which wasn’t especially good didn’t do much to cover that up. For a place as expensive as this one ALL the food should be great. Not just most of it.
My wife and I had dinner here last week. Our experience here was mixed. While the food was very good to excellent overall, znd the ambiance at Vine Street was excellent, our service experience was mixed. Initially our waitress was very attentive. However when our dinner came, my wife's steak was undercooked, and she didn't come back to check on how our meals were for 25 minutes or more (Vine Street was reasonably busy that night, but not unduly so). By that time the steak was half eaten (outside more done than inside). She offered to cook it some more, but by that time we were done with dinner. We ordered after dinner drinks and one desert. The drinks came quickly, but we waited another 20 minutes or so for the desert to come. When the bill came, the steak was taken off the bill which we appreciated (and was appropriate), but after we paid by credit card, my card was not intially returned with the bill. In summary, great ambiance, very good food, and mixed service.
A perfect experience. Reservation was honored, service was excellent & our meals were delicious. Our favorite Sancerre was on the wine list. Highly recommend!
Probably best restaurant in the Hamptons
Vine St., Café is well prepared and tasty food, albeit, a bit overpriced. The outdoor seating area is very nice; and much more conducive to conversation then the inside rooms. The waitress, while nice, could not answer our questions about some dishes or beers. Oddly, no local / Long Is. is on the menu when there are several excellent breweries in the area. Overall, the food was good; yet there are other local restaurants which are equally as good or better.
Really delicious food - a little on the loud side for us, but we were lucky enough to have a corner table so that helped. No view - my husband was at a window that looked over dumpsters - they should clean that up!
We come every year and it never disappoints. Highly recommend the Calamari Salad! Steak is always great too.
Delicious food served by well trained staff. I had clams and seafood Diavolo. Well-heeled sophisticated clientele.
The vine cafe just has really tasty food! The service was great and everyone was nice. The food was delicious - meat and fish!
So delicious with fresh local ingredients. Very flavorful meal. Highly recommend.
This was my second visit within 2 weeks and it was not as good as my first experience.
The service was off ...it was lobster roll night and the roll was burnt...it took quite a while for the entrees to be served so we did without the roll.
However the bread is the best around. But I won’t be going back this season.
In all fairness I will give a try again next year.
We went on a Monday night. The restaurant was almost full but not too noisy. We ordered the bouillabaisse and the salmon and both were delicious. We will definitely be back.
Lovely evening. Delicious food. Helpful service. Sitting in the garden was perfect.
