$31 to $50
Chinese
Conveniently located across from Lincoln Center and a startling revelation in shiny black lacquer, Shun Lee exudes Asian chic with grand authority.
For haute Chinese cuisine, it’s among New York City’s best. Regional offerings include crispy Grand Marnier prawns with honey walnuts (Canton), braised sea bass in hot bean sauce (Hunan) and shredded beef with leeks and hot peppers (Szechwan). Specialties include beggar’s chicken baked in lotus leaves and clay (requires one day’s notice), Hunan tripe, sweetbreads with black mushrooms and of course, Beijing Duck.

I love going here - spacious room and neat decor. The service is a little quirky when it comes to communicating with the waiters but you end up getting what you want and it’s part of the character. Food is reliably good.

Always a good place to eat around Lincoln Center. Been going for years and years. On Sunday night, the usual great varieties of dim sum were fewer. Carts did not roll around as frequently although it was still an enjoyable dinner. Just not up to its usual 5 star!

First courses were served over the course of an hour. Main courses came in after waiting 1 hour and 20 minutes. The shredded beef was inedible. The waiters were generally rude with one of them telling us about another table that they should leave if they don’t like the wait. We were not the only patrons experiencing this terrible situation. Other tables were complaining. This resulted in the waiters bickering and screaming at each other. All in, a very unpleasant environment. DO NOT GO, especially if you are time constrained.

The wait staff was overwhelmed. One of our entrees came at very end of the meal . And the server did not assemble the pancakes for our peking duck. They also did not provide entree plates after the appetizer plates. We asked for tea and never received it. The mens room was again flooded. We were here at New Years Eve and it was flooded then as well.

I have to say- I expected more. For the price it was not at all the flavor experience I expected. It was equivalent (or worse) to a take out joint- and for those prices that is not OK.

I've been going to Shun Lee West for 40 years — since I was a kid — and even if I only come in once or twice a year nowadays, the staff still remembers me and my wife and daughter. The food is 1980s-style upscale Szechuan fare, not exactly cutting-edge but always welcome. The Beijing Duck and the orange beef were my favorites in the '80s and are still delicious today.

Unfortunately, it missed. It was one stumble after another. They forgot one appetizer, the. Forgot an entree. Then forgot the rice. We didn’t get all the food at the same time- either course. And lastly, the duck- typically divided and served in wraps as a nice presentation, was just brought to the table as is. Server seemed out off that we wanted it served the usual way Maybe they were overwhelmed, given that it’s holiday season, but it’s time to get back to normal. It’s been better

The food is exceptional. Nice large open space, convenient location to Lincoln Center. I think the best Chinese in NY! More important, great service. There was an issue with my reservation due to an error on their end. They more than corrected it by comping my meal as an apology! Great experience. I will be back again and again.

Beautiful ambiance. Food very unremarkable and menu is not at all creative. We had a group of 7 and varied dishes. None of the dishes made it above average except for the soups. The typical cost of a dish at $28-$32 was actually worth $15. An order of steamed plain noodles for a child was $20. Really? If ambiance is your priority, you received a generous bonus this year, and you are ok with average Chinese standbys this is your place.

This had been a favorite restaurant for Peking duck for years, but, since Covid, the price has skyrocketed. Pre-Covid, it was $56 for a shared duck. Post-Covid, their website advertised it for $65; last time, we didn't look at the menu and were shocked to find get the bill for $118, almost double! When I complained to the restaurant that the website should have shown the correct price, they did not reply. This time, their website listed it as $75; their takeout menu as $70. I didn't trust them and phoned, and the price was still $118. We can't afford to go back again for the duck, except for special occasions. And, despite excellent food (vegetable dumplings, yum), and atmosphere, our resentment at their refusing to update or honor price publicity, and to respond to our original email, has meant we will not return as frequently, even for items on their regular menu. Sad.

I’m sad to say this was a really negative dining experience. It was my mother’s birthday and I had noted that in the reservation. When we arrived, there was no maître d, we were eventually hurriedly sat by a waiter. So there was never any recognition of the birthday at all. We ordered scallion pancakes which never arrived and spare ribs, which also didn't arrive and the waiter vehemently insisted we hadn't ordered it. We absolutely had as it was my mother's entrée. The pan fried noodles were hard, raw and crunchy at the tip, the mojito was clearly made from a mix and we were left with two fortune cookies. I'm a native New Yorker and come to Lincoln Center frequently, I even worked there for eight years. This was my first time at Shun Lee and my last.

This was not the Shun Lee I was used to. Service was appalling. Empty beer bottles left on the table. Check came without our being given the opportunity to order dessert. Check whisked out from under my pen while I was in the process of signing it. Perhaps it was the poor mood the service had put me in, but the food seemed off too. Certainly the XO shrimp were very dry.
