Back to lunch with a friend for the usual elegant quiet venue and very tasty food. Were some hiccups in service this time which was MOST unusual.

We were a group of 8 "older women at lunch and were treated royally. We were given a cozy alcove, perfect for conversation. From making the reservation, handling special requests and through to the finish, the staff was gracious and very accommodating. It was hard to choose from all the delicious-sounding offerings on the menu. I had the tuna burger, which was excellent, very juicy and tasty. Others enjoyed the crab roll and salads. One of our shared desserts was absolutely out-of-this-world. I don't remember the name but it was a chocolate bar with bananas on top next to a scoop of banana ice cream. I'm not a big chocolate fan but will definitely order that the next time I go.

Have been here several times and the food is excellent. The big bonus with this restaurant is that it is one of the *quietest* in D.C. So if you are coming for a working meeting, conversation with your friends, or just some quiet contemplation -- rather than blaring music or roaring crowd noise -- this is the place!

On this particular visit, we unfortunately had multiple problems with the service. Not something I've experienced before. Several things forgotten, late to the table, etc. However, the wait staff and management were committed to making sure we were fully satisfied and fairly treated by the end of the evening. For that reason, I would still recommend this restaurant, because the quality of the food and quiet ambiance, at a reasonable price, are difficult to find anywhere else in the city.

Went for pre-theater dinner although ordered off regular dinner menu. Initially ignored, did get to order while stating theater start time, food was fine. But we felt we needed to rush through the entree when it finally arrived in order to have time to walk to the theater and pick up the tickets (we originally sat down an hour and a half behalf before the show). The Italian style pan bread was warm but salty. The spinach salad was delicious with its pecorino (sheep) cheese and other sprinkles. The roast chicken was especially tasty. The duck was perfect but it sat atop the saltiest shredded napa cabbage. The overall ambiance and background music was lovely but could have done with less salt or at least have something to counter it.

Looked for a restaurant close to Fords Theatre for a post-performance meal. Menu looked interesting with good vegetarian options. But food was mostly disappointing. The best part of the meal was the sunchoke soup. The hanger steak was possibly the toughest piece of meat I've had in years! I had to give up 1/2 way through; my son managed to eat some of it. The accompanying potato cakes were too salty. Dessert was so-so with too much emphasis on bananas with the chocolate terrine--not a good flavor combination. Service was excellent, but I wouldn't return.

We have eaten several times at 701 and found the food and service to be excellent on every occasion. Our waiter was responsive, got us out in time to make theater without making us feel rushed. The table are far apart and one can have a normal conversation over dinner.

Went to 701 before the theater. We were a little early so the place was empty, even on a Saturday at 6:30pm. But the live pianist was very enjoyable and the food and service were absolutely great! The pre-theater menu is a good value!

701 Restaurant:
This restuarant is located at 701 Pennsylvania Avenue NW DC. Beautiful decor. Live Jazz on Fri- Sat after 530p to 9pm and it's open until midnight.
Paper menus ( which I hate ) but cocktails in a leather book (go figure). So we were Seated in a room with a lot of windows in the corner of the restaurant. There were a lot of tables available because it was early but the host chose to seat us in this secluded part of the restaurant. We were the only ones ( Brown) in this little area (displeased). Very scarce on the brown people with the exception of Charles and myself. I could've asked to be moved to a different part of the restaurant but I let it ride.

Appetizers came out with the heads on the prawns but beautifully plated but I can't stand the heads on. These prawns were missing that extra flavor that they should've had. This place allegedly has a Michelin Star so was very disappointed in the lack of flavor. Entrees ordered were, Alaskan Halibut with risotto and grilled Swordfish with quinoa. Now these dishes were everything. They were beautifully prepared/plated and the taste was pure perfection. We enjoyed these so much.

Service could've been better and the server should've been more attentive which he wasn't.

Overall I give them a 7 based off the beautiful decor that we barely could take in after being taken to the seclusion room, the live Jazz that we barely heard again because of where we seated and the entrees since they were delicious and appealing appearance.

701 Pennsylvania Ave Restaurant & Bar
tips: You might want to do a better job with your Hosts/Hostesses when seating customers and making them feel they were being isolated. No one wants to be seated where they cannot hear the music when there are plenty of available tables. You also need to ensure your servers are more attentive.

Would we return?? No thanks

We came for restaurant week and the food was great. We had the Bronzino and duck for dinner, both good choices. If you are craving carbs you need to order additional sides. Desserts are light and wonderful. The place gets a bit noisy from the bar area so not the place if you would like a tranquil conversation. Service was good but felt rushed at times.

The service was good. The lady who served us is very experienced and obviously know all the details of the menu. The other staff are professional too.

The food was great, especially for the restaurant week. The chilled sweet corn soup was delicious.

We didn’t try the wine.

There were a group of people standing at the entrance. The noise was a bit loud. Other than that, everything was satisfactory.

We have been here many times over several years and have only been disappointed once. From inexpensive bar lunches to elaborate multi- course meals, both service and quality of food have always been excellent. Fish is always fresh and perfectly cooked, as is beef. This time we went during August Restaurant Week and enjoyed a delicious meal and bottle of wine at bargain prices, it’s an increasingly rare restaurant where conversation is easy in a comfortable and gracious setting. Bonus this time was a wonderful outdoor concert by the Navy band and Sea Chanter singers just outside the door. Highly recommend!

Four of us came for Restaurant Week lunch. Two had chicken, one had hangar steak and one had salmon. For starters, 3 had gazpacho and one had the salad. For dessert, 3 had carrot cake and one had sorbet. The food was very, very good. The service was very attentive. It was well worth the price for lunch. We look forward to returning here in the future.

I thought that the menu for this year's Restaurant Week was outstanding. It was one of the best menus during the past few years.

Quiet elegance. Fabulous food. Profession waiters. Soft comfortable chairs. Pleasant and relaxing experience. Zen-like ambiance. Totally upscale and classy restaurant. Welcome relief from loud places with wooden chairs, so-so food, and waiters who greet diners as, "hi guys." Restaurant 701 is a gem. And conveniently located at the top of Archives metro escalator in Penn Quarter.
