Food was very good but service was very slow. It took a long time after placing our orders for the food to arrive. Ambience was enjoyable with a fireplace going and a pianist playing all night without it being too loud. Were easily able to converse with friends.
Outstanding foods and service. Great would game selections
Alway fine food and service. The facility need redecorating and better ambiance. Food menus are good for those who like unusual meats or fowl. Prices on bar drinks are good .
Four people for brunch/lunch who hadn't seen each other in a while.
Very nice, well appointed restaurant. Really good food and choices. Service was efficient and friendly without being intrusive, never rushed us. Good piano player that allowed us to listen while continuing our conversation. Worth the trip and the money.
We partook in the 7-course tasting. I had some new food I have never eaten before. My wife and I make an annual visit to Bernard’s, and it is always a new experience for us. I highly recommend Bernard’s to anyone and everyone. I have had friends and family visit and thank me for sharing this gem.
Food was excellent as expected, service was a bit slow but we were in no hurry. The only disappoint was that the waiter mixed up the take home left over giving us our friends dinner and not ours. My wife questioned him to make sure he did not mix them up but when we got home it was evident that he did. We live in NJ and they live in CT so exchanging was not possible.
Bernard's never lets me down as an outstanding place fr a very special meal!
been there many times,go out of our way to get there. Its worth it!!!
We had booked a reservation based on an advertised special dinner offering with wines. Apparently that plan had fallen through. When we declined the regular menu, our waiter looked briefly stunned, but without missing a beat he clearly spoke to the the chef who then seamlessly ad libbed a 6 course tasting menu paired with wines for one of the better dinners we have ever had. Instead of giving us both the same offerings they gave each of us a different his/her selection. The creative and well matched wine and food selections, improvised on the spot, was masterfully accomplished.
First visit, on a quiet evening, and very enjoyable. A very pleasant dining room, spacious and well-appointed. Service was excellent and an extensive, primarily French, wine list provided fine pairings with all dishes. The lobster bisque was tasty, and the grilled octopus had strong balance with the olive based dressing. Both the duck and the boar dishes were hearty and cooked as requested, while the halibut was tender and flaky. The sampler and lemon trio desserts provided a fine finish; we will return.
An enduring French classic for country dining. A little noisy the last time we were there (yesterday) and service was slow (2 plus hours for threecourse lunch), but outstanding food and ambience made it all worthwhile.
Been at Bernard's many times during its existence and have never been disappointed. Spacious quiet dining room, service with great attention to detail, comprehensive and affordable wine list, and great food - especially local veggies and seasonal dishes.
Wow!! Good food and great atmosphere! Amazing value as well. We will be back!
Absolutely the best prepared meal I’ve ever had. Attention to detail. The biggest and best wine list. Comfortable setting with terrific service.
Perfect, as always. Lively but you can always have a conversation - and tablecloths! The food continues to be excellent.
Barnard’s is a fabulous restaurant with exceptional food every time we have eaten there. You can rely on a consistently good experience
First time st this restaurant. Birthday lunch was made special by the staff. Everyone was happy with their choices- chicken, duck and salmon. They have a few separate dining rooms so we had one to ourselves. The waiters were knowledgeable and attentive. Would recommend.
The food and presentation always tops my expectations.I intend to get a gift certificate for my daughter and her husband for christmas.
Went for Sunday Brunch. Atmosphere was very nice. Live piano. The food was excellent.
It is a lovely room with exceptional service. Three of our four entrees were excellent and made fresh. The fourth was duck and terrible. It tasted old, dry, over cooked. This should not have happened.
We have eaten at Bernard’s many times and the food is always great. The service was also excellent. Will go back again.
We have been going to Bernard’s for decades. And that is the problem. It is tired. The decor and the menu are dated. The food is good but the entire package is not pleasant. They need to refurbish and join the 21st century.
As usual,my friend and I had a wonderful meal and ambience and experience at Bernard's and we go to Bernard's whenever we can get together. My friend comes up from New York, and we have a nice drive up to Bernard's.
We came to Bernard’s to celebrate my husband’s birthday. It was our first time there. We live in Sherman and wanted to try something different. I am French and appreciate good French cuisine. I am sad to say that Bernard’s was a disappointment, especially considering how pricey it is. I had oysters to start which were mediocre (I should know better than to have oysters in August), and the mignonette sauce was really off, too much vinegar, not enough shallots. My husband had the flight of bacon, which he said was interesting but not great. I had the baked salmon as my main. It was moist but basically tasteless, and the quinoa croquettes and vegetables were likewise uninspiring. My husband had the filet mignon (on the bone) au poivre, which he said was average at best. The best part of the meal was the dessert, which we very rarely have, but we were still hungry after our main course, which we didn’t finish. I had the thin tarte aux pommes with caramel ice cream, which was well prepared and elisions. My husband had the lime cheese cake, which was equally good. The server was kind enough to add a candle to my husband’s dessert, though there was no “happy birthday” scrolled in chocolate on the side of the plate as many high end restaurants typically do. The country bread was also excellent, and the wine list quite extensive and fairly priced (though neither my husband nor I took advantage, as we don’t drink much). With only 2 glasses of wine, the meal plus tip came to $255. If I’m going to pay NYC or Paris prices, I expect the same level of quality. Unfortunately Bernard’s did not deliver.
On the plus side, our server was attentive and friendly, and the live piano music provided a lovely and romantic atmosphere. The room is quiet and conducive to conversation, though the decor is a bit dated.
Unless major improvements are made in the quality of the cuisine, I would not go back. Dommage!
My wife has had this restaurant on her "bucket list" for a long time. Had a delicious and leisurely lunch here with friends on 8/24/2018. My wife had the mesclun salad and one friend had the tomato soup as appetizers. Both were very good. One friend the special of the day, swordfish, which she enjoyed very much. I had the duck confit, and enjoyed every bite, as I like duck but don't have it often. My wife had the lobster salad, which was delicious. One friend had eggs Benedict, which were done perfectly. The ladies shared warm apple tarte with caramel ice cream for dessert. We ended with coffee, tea, and cappuccino.
We were amazed to find that we had been at Bernard's for 2 1/2 hours! We even had our photo taken with
Sarah, as our friends are staying in the same building where Sarah's mom lives, and they had chatted about Bernard's. Our server was professional, answered our questions, and didn't rush us. We hope to dine at Bernard's again soon.
This is an outstanding restaurant - great for a special occasion. The food is delicious, and it is prepared artfully as well. The wine choices are excellent, too. We had three people in our party ordering different meals, and we all thought the food was superb.
We went on a Saturday night, and there was a piano player who added to the wonderful ambiance.
Dinner for three (with wine and dessert) ran in the $200 range, so that is why I suggested that this is best for a special occasion, when you want great food to celebrate a special event.
One of our favorites for special nights out. We like it so much we got married in the wine bar upstairs! Traditional French menu with some interesting twists. Good wine and beverage list and very knowledgeable staff.
Always great food and service! Extensive wine list.
Outstanding service and truly wonderful food. The most extensive wine list I've seen in Connecticut
We enjoyed a wonderful anniversary dinner with excellent service and a romantic atmosphere… Great food and wine and a fabulous upside down pineapple cake for dessert!
Wonderful atmosphere especially with the Jazz Masters show on Sunday. Food and service were excellent, on par with the best of NYC establishments. The Jazz is the icing on the cake.
Dined on a recent Saturday evening and food was exceptional. Excellent ambience with a piano player in the background who was fabulous. Service excellent as always.
Due to an event upstairs, the food was slightly delayed from the kitchen but alas no worries- all was great.
One of my favorite restaurants for fine dining - highly recommended.
With over 100 visits to Bernard's, I can tell you that it never disappoints. On the few occasions in which something wasn't quite right, it's been correctly, quickly.
Great food, service, and piano.
My wife and I went here for my birthday. I am not a foodie, but if I was I would really be pleased with Bernard’s. Awesome food. Service was excellent (and I am very demanding). Piano music in the background made this a cozy, romantic getaway.
As usual, Bernard's does not disappoint. We almost always do the 7 course tasting. Everything is divine, and perfectly cooked. It's an elegant, proper but not stuffy atmosphere. Our favorite restaurant for special occasions. 5 stars!
Service was superb as was the food. Swordfish was like butter, surrounded by tiny bits of
veggies of all kinds. Everyone loved their choices, mostly vegetarian. The crabmeat stuffed
blossom was priceless and heavenly. The garden area was quiet and lovely. Dessert of
sorbets were fruity fresh and included fresh fruits. We couldn't have asked for more perfection
in every instance. Thank you Sarah and Bernard for making the farewell gathering so memorable.
Excellent Saturday evening dinner. Always a treat for a special occasion or a relaxing & classy night out. Only restaurant around that offers live piano yet doesn’t drown out dinner conversation. We’ve come here for years & will be continuing to do so.
It was our 40th wedding anniversary and we wanted a special place with first rate food and service. We had plenty of both with a wonderful and knowledgeable server and the chef accommodating special requests.
Bernard's is the epitomy of fine dining, the food is delicious and complex. The service is excellent, friendly and efficient. The ambiance of the restaurant is elegant. EVERYTHING about this restaurant is superb. We had the tasting menu and each dish was delectable. Bernard is a 5 star chef with imagination and he has a commitment to prepare the best food beyond ones imagination. This is a great restaurant. Our family had a wonderful evening with great wine and food.
Great place to bring your family and friends. I drove from pound ridge for a change of pace, I was truly surprised. Good food, very nice servers, strong drinks and a fun outside area for drinks and dinner which is a bit more casual than inside. If you in the area you should definately stop here. They have food as good as anything in this area including the fancy expensive restaurants which everyone raves about.
