Le Vieux - Permanently Closed

Mediterranean
Founded in 2014, Le Vieux has brought French cuisine to the heart of Portland and placed a heavy emphasis on the elegance of presentation. One look at the menu will also show you that Le Vieux has almost everything lovers of French food could ask for. There’s the braised rabbit, for one. The lamb mixed grill, roasted steelhead and Moroccan beef brisket are equally sumptuous. Being a French restaurant, you can count on a number of amazing vintages and some to-die-for desserts like warm brioche doughnuts or a chocolate layer cake served with peppermint ice cream. Even the cheese plate at Le Vieux is incredible.

We went to Le Vieux for dinner last Wednesday for the Portland Dining month, and enjoyed the meals very much! We did feel that the portions we were served of the salads and the entrees were somewhat on the small side, and wondered if that was because of the $29 special for the month. The hostess was great and we found out from her more about the restaurant which was interesting, then we came home and read more on-line about how it began. No bread was served, probably OK, so don't expect extras like that before your meal. It took longer than expected to get our food, but I think that is because there is one chef to put out all the delicious meals. Overall, nice!

The four of us dined here during Portland's annual Resturant week and enjoyed the three course options of lamb and tangine chicken-cauliflower leek soup was excellent and service was attentive but wasn't really a memorable experience. We would stop by again if in the neighborhood but wouldn't choose it for a special event. Come here for good food and a nice atmosphere - you will have an enjoyable evening.

Tried as one of March Dining Month new place to go. Everything was fantastic and the regular menu looked just as good. We asked for help matching the wine and were more than happy with pairing. We will be back!

Food was fantastic, however one of our dinners arrived about 15 minutes after the others due to an error in the kitchen. It was first reported to be coming out in 2 minutes but that didn't happen. This caused us to be late for a theater date and made it a rush to finish desert and bolt. One of the servers was unapologetic, blaming it on the kitchen and the other just avoided us. The management did nothing to make up for the error. A multitude of things could have been done to bridge the gap, they could have asked if the unserved diner wanted the incorrectly cooked meal or something to bridge the wait rather than just leaving them with an empty spot and our dinners getting cold. Or comped a small menu item like the appetizer. Customer service is important when there is so much competition in this town. Perhaps they will become better organized or learn to value a diners time in the near future.

The menu sounded great and based on several reviews we wanted to give it a try. My husband and I tried each item on the dining month menu. Overall, the meal lacked flavor as we both kept looking for a salt shaker. The lamb served "2 ways" was dry and really "was nothing new". The chicken entrée presentation was good, but the flavor and texture (dry and chewy) did not live up to it. The dessert was a basic chocolate cookie filled with mint ice cream. It needed to be tempered as it was hard as a rock when we received it.

Great setting, with dinner served until after 9 pm. Knowledgeable and passionate staff. After a slow starter we had outstanding main dishes, the steelhead and the cassoulet. Wine list lacks a 'house wine' but the Vacqueyras wine served was very good. Nice, relaxing atmosphere.

We had a wonderful dinner here. Service was friendly and very responsive. Our party of three had three dishes: half a roster chicken, steelhead, and cassoulet. Also were excellent - rich and flavorful, good-sized portions, and perfectly cooked. Appetizers (pickles and cheeses) were also excellent. Overall a delightful country French culinary experience. Try to get in soon. It's a shame, but they will be going out of business in late March.

Most enjoyable! The cauliflower appetizer was lightly fried, crisp on the outside and just crunchy enough on the inside. The Bouillabaisse entree had a rich savory broth that complemented the fresh Pacific Northwest fish and shellfish, and the cassoulet really showcased the duck confit. Friendly and helpful front-house staff and a very competent team in the kitchen. It's on our "go back" list.

My friend and I shared three dishes; mushroom and celery root gratin, the seared scallop special of the day, the egg and pork belly sandwich and coffee. Everything came out hot, was very tasty, and plenty to fill up two women who can eat! I would have given 5 stars on the food if it had a touch more seasoning. Overall, it was a fantastic value for the nice setting, service and timing (we were out of there in exactly an hour). We each paid about $20 before tip. Will definitely be back!

Dinner this past Wednesday evening was our first time at Le Vieux and also happened to be our anniversary. We were delighted with our evening and our meal from cocktails on through. The maitre d' was able to advise us about ingredients, portion size and things that would go well with each other, both from the drinks and wine list as well as the food. Pacing of service was perfect, noise was minimal so we could talk, but also not feel as though the rest of the room was listening. We shared a pate plate with our cocktails - a lovely combination of textures and tastes, along with pickles and mustard plus small baguette slices, and then shared an octopus and scallop salad which was exquisite. It was perfectly seasoned and cooked with a little greenery to add contrast in texture, color and taste. One of us had the pork shoulder over soft polenta with braised leeks (heavenly!!) and the other had the steak with potato chunks and sautéed greens, also delicious. We went rogue and had the two cheese options for dessert - perfect! We had a good conversation about the wine choice in that our choice was one with substantial taste and impact. She discreetly let us know this and when we said we didn't mind if it competed slightly with the food, she smiled and said we would love that particular wine - and we did! It was a great evening all around and we will certainly go back.

We finally had a chance to try this new spot and arrived the week of their first anniversary. Now we wish we hadn't waited so long because this was our top dining experience of the year! The main dining room has seven tables and an intimate feel though still definitely NW casual. The service was prompt, cordial and informative without being overbearing. In additional, Annette's suggestions on wine and draft beer were spot on. Back in the open kitchen, you can watch Brian cranking out what we discovered to be exceptional cuisine. He's obviously in his element back there. The cassoulet and octopus with mussels almost drew us back the next night - those dishes along with the warm gingerbread cake. Now we're spreading the word and making plans with friends to return.

The food is handmade and it is obvious and delicious. Preparation, saucing, and presentation was superb. Many great main choices on the menu and be sure and try some apps as they are all wonderful. This is not everyday faire. And the attention to good service by the owners completes the experience. This was our 4th time dining here and we will be back many more.

This is an excellent restaurant for date night or dinner with friends. The interior is simple and elegant with a glassed patio on one side and an outdoor deck in front. The food is always interesting. The menu can be counted on to have several things you'll want, whether it's a favorite or it's something new for you. Well thought out, well prepared and presented with concern that it was what you hoped for when you ordered, an excellent wine list, thoughtful service, dining at Le Vieux is sure to leave you with the good feeling you hoped for from your dinner or brunch.

We went to Le Vieux last weekend and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals and their wine selection. This place is a little off the beaten track (just a couple blocks from NW Thurman's action) but it's worth it and parking is easy. The desserts were some of the best I've had in a long time. We all shared three and each one was fantastic. I can't pick a favorite! The chocolate cake with homemade pistachio ice cream, apple tartine and ginger cake were all so yummy! Give this place a try and save room for dessert!

From the yummy squash blossoms, grilled octopus with fingerlings and oh so tasty Romesco sauce, to the osso buco, seared duck breast, and smoked eggplant soup, to the warm walnut cake it was top notch. The staff could not have been more gracious and accommodating. There were 8 of us and one has celiac disease. It was a non-issue. Our group is close-knit and we travel together. The evening reminded us of our dinners in Italy. Lovely.

.......but you don't need an occasion to feel special here. The food was amazing and the care and attention of all the individuals was stellar. You can go casual and enjoy friends, go alone and feel "special" or go for that birthday dinner and have an amazing time (we saw it all when we were there). The food was incredible - they do know how to cook fish. The ricotta stuffed zucchini blossoms were the best I've had outside of Italy. The salad so refreshing and the polenta with rabbit still makes my mouth water. We ended with two desserts, both yummy. We started with cocktails and had a glass of wine during dinner and the bill did NOT break the bank! A wonderful neighborhood gem. Thanks for a beautiful evening.
