American
Almanac is a fine dining establishment in New York City specializing in unique American dishes. A common three-course menu will involve a sampling of such items as the pork loin, stuffed with savoy cabbage and apple. Also served would be monkfish and gnudi. The latter is an Almanac specialty, tossed with mushroom, Swiss chard and parmesan. For even bigger occasions, Almanac has a five and eight-course meal available. Each is served with a range of vegetable, meat and seafood options. This is also a great location to taste wine from around the world, enjoy a few cocktails or just order from the extensive collection of spirits on offer from the full bar.

We were looking for a nice place for a Friday night dinner and went basically by the ZAGAT recommendations. The food was really excellent and the service was so too. We had the five course menu and every course was to the point. We are definitely planning to come back to this wonderful place.

My husband and I recently found Almanac and it's one of the best restaurants I've been to in NYC - great atmosphere, not pretentious, delicious food and friendly waitstaff. You choose from three options of tasting menu's (3 course, 5 course or 8 course) so come hungry. I'd suggest a wine pairing as well to compliment the dishes. Really a great find.

The chef is preparing for a Michelin star. Unfortunately when you are trying to cook for that category the competition is very tough. Though the food was good it is certainly not worth the price. Dinner drinks and tip ran 150 dollars a person. You could go to Gabriel Kreuther for not much more. If I owned the restaurant I would reduce the price by thirty dollars a person. Otherwise I fear they will be out of business in a year

Girlfriend and I were visiting NYC from out of town and selected The Almanac for our valentines dinner. We both thought the overall experience was excellent. It was a 4 four course set menu. Our favorites were the octopus for the appetizer and the halibut for the main course. I also had the venison, which was very good. Staff was extremely friendly, very attentive, but not overbearing. The atmosphere was intimate. It was pricy, but that was to be expected due to holiday. When we come back to the city, it will be on our places to visit again.

Almanac has a new chef de cuisine and he is wonderful! I had the oysters which were fresh, plump, and delicious, especially with a small dollop of caviar on each! Also tried the lamb angnolotti which were rich and flavorful. Highly recommend both dishes but am sure all the others are equally wonderfully prepared. As usual the staff at Almanac are always welcoming and gracious. It's a wonderful place to dine.

We had a great experience and meal at Almanac. It's a foodie spot with great service. The cheese platter, specifically the accoutrements, was the top 3 I've ever had (and I've had cheese with many a dinner). The char, carrot cake and Turley wine also stood out.

They picked a great NYE prix fixe menu. At a time of year when you've been served every food possible, they still managed to use ingredients that were special but not overly rich. Each of the four courses we were served had great flavors and the wine pairings made the meal one of the best we had had all year.

We paid 500 dollars to walk away craving food. The appetizers were so sparse, we expected at least an ample entree. Instead we got a small chunk of meat, and that was it! When I called the restaurant later that evening to complain, they told us we should have told them at the time we were there. Why? So they could charge us for more food?

OH....I'm so glad we didn't cancel since we were tired of traipsing all over NY. The restaurant is beautiful. Service devine. But it only matters if the food was magic and it is. We ordered from the three course Christmas menu and chose a variety of dishes. Our lovely neighbors at the next table insisted I choose the fish which I did. It reminded me of my extraordinary meal at Les Freres Trois Gros over thirty years ago, my first experience with a three star restaurant in France. It was there in the first bite that I first understood what a heavenly experience good food can be. Anyway, it's not a French three star but it was by American standards, a truly fine meal. Add to that the overall experience, I give it a Merry 5.

We ate here on Christmas day as we were on our honeymoon spending a week of it in New York. Although the price for the Christmas menu was quite high and also the wine and including a tip I have to say the food was amazing. As good as I have eaten anywhere in the world. Would totally recommend this place for a special occasion or a romantic meal with your partner. Staff were very friendly and welcoming too.

They had a special 5 course tasting menu for $150 each. It was delicious, but "tasting" was the appropriate word. Not really enough food. After adding in two cocktails each and a lower priced bottle of wine for two people (admittedly a lot to drink), the total bill was over $500 including tax and tip. Probably won't go back because we usually don't eat at places that expensive except on special occasions. But the service was great, it is a beautiful ambience, and the food tasty.

My boyfriend and I had dinner at Almanac and it was truly wonderful. Before dinner we tried some of their house cocktails. Everything is focused on the season, including the drinks, so I had a fabulous pumpkin infused bourbon cocktail, and my boyfriend had the Maple, which is a take on a Manhattan. They were both delicious. We each did the three course with wine pairings. Some highlights were the 7X Wagyu with cucumber, black sesame and baby kale, the chanterelle soup (the best soup I've ever had!), and the duck with sweet potato, pecans and brussel sprouts. The deserts were also amazing. The roots dessert with sweet potato and parsnip was so incredibly unique and yummy, and I just loved the Cheesecake with bruleed butternut and chocolate cake. The Manager was attentive and informative, as was our server, the wines were perfectly paired, and the decor is absolutely gorgeous. So much attention to detail! I was especially taken by the beautiful artwork, and learned that our server is also an artist who was kind enough to show us her pieces that she has hanging at Almanac (and they are incredible). I fall in love with a restaurant when all the elements come together: delicious food, beautiful atmosphere, attention to detail, & informative and inviting staff. Almanac has stolen my heart. I will most definitely be going back.

Was really looking forward to this based onto this based on 5 yr of great experience with Mas. However, was very disappointed. Small portions, too many ingredients for too little effect. While I am more than willing pay for quality and experience at Mas, and in dining in general, this was just exorbitant for no apparent reason or effect. If I am not their demographic, who is?

The food here is pristine. All of the ingredients come from local farms and it is all amazingly fresh and vibrant even in winter. The scallops with cauliflower were phenomenal as well as the duck dish with sweet potato. The wine list is also great with a lot of affordable finds.

The space is beautiful and cozy. We were seated in the mezzanine level which seemed nice at first but with the ceiling so close it got very noisy and I felt like I could hear the conversation at the table next to me better than I could my dinner companion. It doesn't help that the small tables are quite close to each other. Food is quite good, though I prefer the menu at his other restaurant Mas Farmhouse better. That's just my presence. The menu was not explained to us, you basically choose how many courses you want and the more choices you choose the less input you have on what you get. It left me wanting more and the server, while pleasant, spent virtually no time going over anything. Dishes were brought out occasionally with out explanation of what it was and since you aren't picking your exact courses and explanation is really helpful. At the end of the night between the noise and the service I felt like we were being rushed. The restaurant was busy but it wasn't packed. A place like this should be appreciated slowly. This is a great chef but I will stick with Mas Farmhouse.

My wife and I went to Almanac for our anniversary and had a great experience. The décor is welcoming, the staff is friendly, attentive and knowledgeable, and the food is A+. On Saturday night they had 3 different tasting menus, and they allow you to mix and match items from all three. We opted for the 5 course tasting, but each picked a different item off of the 3 course menu because we liked those options better. If you don't want to do a tasting, you can simply pick whatever you want to eat as an appetizer for $20, and an entrée for $40. Drinks and wines are reasonably priced as well. If you enjoy fine dining, but can do without the pretentiousness, Almanac is a spot you'll definitely want to try.

I love how they let me mix and match across all the tasting menus. Anyway, the short rib was fantastic and the apple tart dessert was stunning. Can they do a dessert tasting menu?!? Tried this because of the positive reviews on opentable. And the setting was quiet and lovely, and the service was good. But the food was just, well, disappointing. I got worried as soon as they served us pre-packaged rolls. Unfortunately, the rest of the meal followed suit. The fluke crudo was tasteless. I also had the cauliflower and scallops, which was OK. But my red snapper main course had an unpleasant, off-taste on the skin, as if it had been cooked in old oil. I like crisp fish skin, but this was soft and not palatable. Darn, a wasted meal on our trip to NYC.

Our dinner was fine but nothing that would bring us back. The reception was very pleasant, the setting was very nice, but our server was not attentive and did not seem to know much about the wine list which surprised us. There was nothing wrong with the food but my husband's snapper was bland, my pork dish was much better. We both ordered the apple tart and it was so sweet---the pastry was good but the apples were lost in all the sugar and syrup. Just expected more given the restaurant's Zagat's rating.

The quality of the food served was simply outstanding, and the noise level was as calm and soothing as it gets. That's where the good news ends. Mere mortals can afford the $75 3-course price fixed menu, but the wine prices are so catastrophically high as to downgrade the overall experience to a "2" at best. The list itself is expansive and impressive, but 90+ % were in triple digits and many, many were north of (in some cases way north of) $300. Is it any wonder that the website does not post the wine list on-line? Our check including tip + tax and their low-end wine was about $175 per person. Caveat emptor!
